Absolutely everything written and explained in the book is laid out in a clear and concise fashion that should make it accessible even to non engineers. All of the examples are highly useful and all important topics are covered. I would reccomend this book even if it isn't the required book of your class.

Good introduction. Not the best I've ever read or seen but if you're trying to decide if Mechanical Engineering is for you this book is a head in the right direction. DO NOT however solely base your decision on this book. I am a Mechanical Engineer and this book was not what did it for me.

Decided to move my comment to the main post:

At college (Rutgers School of Engineering) there is a mandatory class for all incoming engineers. In that class, every major that is offered in engineering at Rutgers is presented to give you a better understanding of what the major involves. Honestly, I am a huge fan of airplanes. I am a fanatic and I love the theory behind them. Couple that with math and Mechanical Engineering just seems like it is a perfect fit. Unfortunately, I can't really think of any "intro" or "starter" book that really got me into mechanical engineering. There are way too many aspects of mechanical engineering to cover in one intro book. You can literally go into almost anything as a mechanical engineer. From buildings to missiles to air conditioners to engines and even to space systems. You can do almost anything. Also, you're not going to find a mechanical engineering intro book that is heavy in math or physics. That also never made sense to me either. That is pretty much the heart and soul of mechanical engineering yet it is mostly left out in intro books. Anyway, good luck in your search!

As a person who constantly seeks to educate myself on new topics i decided i would get this book and learn more about mechanical engineering. I was not disappointed. The book does a great job of explaining the principles of mechanical engineering in a way that can be easily understood by those with no prior physics knowledge and still appreciated by those with it. For anyone interested in learning more about the world of mechanical engineering this is a good cheap book. I wish it were more project oriented but i wont hold that against the book.

One of the most important book on neurology in a decade.

For young research scientists who are interested in understanding the dynamics of the human brain, Koch's book provides the ideal introduction. Written in a precise yet easy style, the 21 Chapters of "Biophysics of Computation" begin at the beginning, introducing the reader to elementary electrical properties of membrane patches, linear cable theory, and the properties of passive dendritic trees. These introductory chapters are followed by two on the properties of synapses and the various ways that synapses can interact to perform logic on passive dendritic trees. Then the Hodgkin--Huxley formulation is discussed in detail, and various simplifying models are presented. As a basis for the Hodgkin--Huxley description, our present understanding of ionic channels is reviewed and the importance of calcium currents is emphasized. Further chapters discuss linearization of the H--H equations for small amplitude analysis, a careful examination of ionic diffusion, electrochemical properties of dendritic spines, synaptic plasticity, simple neural models, stochastic neural models. and the properties of bursting cells. Just about every facet of current neural knowledge is touched upon, with appropriate references to a carefully selected bibliography which will help the diligent novice delve deeply into whatever aspect of neural information processing that he or she chooses.
All of the above comprises an extended introduction to Chapters 17 through 19, which in the words of the author: "synthesize the previously learned lessons into a complete account of the events occuring in realistic dendritic trees with all of their attendant nonlinearities. We will see that dendrites can indeed be very powerful, nontraditional computational devices, implementing a number of continuous operations."
Thus "Biophysics of Computation" offers a definitive statement for the direction in which the neural research of the new century should go. Chapter 20, the penultimate, discussed several speculations for non-neural computation in the brain, ranging from molecular computing below the level of a single neuron to the effects of chemical diffusants (nitric oxide, calcium ions, carbon monoxide, etc.) on large numbers of neurons. Although this entire area has been neglected by the neuroscience community, Koch points out that there are no good reasons for doing so.
Finally, in the summary of Chapter 21, seven problems for future research projects are listed, emphasizing that the study of information processing in single neurons is very much a work in progress.

Excellent look at Neurophysics and Computatinal Processes of Neurons

I am still about 1 half a year away from having all of the math and biology needed to understand ALL of this book, but it's descriptions of single-unit computational processes are clear and easy to parse even without a the additional math and biology.

That said, this IS a book for professionals and students of Computational Neuroscience. It is not intended for a lay audience.

Now we know what really happened

A book like this, which is well written and well researched, is sure to spark controversy. It names the names of those who fell down on the job of protecting the community and that is sure to ruffle some feathers. As a crime researcher myself, I fact-checked some of the unbelievable things I read and discovered Lieberman was completely accurate on every score. And that can be dangerous. It means there will be a guilty few who will do everything they can to prevent the public from reading this. Lets see what comes out when the dust settles.

Meanwhile, it gets my highest recommendation for giving us the facts behind this entire phenomenon of school shooting, and not a moment too soon.

Understanding the unthinkable.

Mr. Lieberman's book helps to understand the unthinkable - the reasons why the disturbed teen's behavior was overlooked and signs of impending violence were missed. My husband was a victim of a school shooter on September 29, 2006. This book hits the nail on the head - that school shooters are master manipulators and are able to convince counselors, school staff and adminstrators and even law enforcement that they are not a threat. The making of a school shooter begins at home WITH THE PARENTS. Eric Hainstock (who murdered my husband) was referred time and time again by several different schools he attended for counseling, but his father would not allow it. He was afraid the County would remove him from the "home" and there would go his meal ticket. He would no longer receive County support for Eric. Therefore the abuse continues and the teen becomes more and more out of touch with reality. Eric Hainstock never gave a thought to murdering his own worthless, abusive father, but instead shot my husband who was the very person trying the hardest to help him. Mr. Lieberman's book points out again and again how the shooters manipulate people to believe there is nothing wrong. I don't know how we will ever be able to prevent school shootings in the future when the parents and their disturbed child are so intent on hiding the fact that there is a problem. These kids and their abusive parents should not be able to refuse counseling.

Shooting game gets it right

Joseph Lieberman's book, The Shooting Game, focuses primarily on Kip Kinkel who, in 1998, killed his parents and rampaged his school in Springfield, Oregon, killing two students and wounding 25 others. In attempting to understand this inexplicable killing, Lieberman takes his readers on a tour of other rampage shootings, the psychology of rampage shooters, America's culture of violence, issues of access to guns, media culpability, and masculinity. He also provides insight into the family and the community in which this happened.

We may never understand what motivated Kip Kinkel to kill his family and rampage his school. What is important about this book is that it gives us insight into rampage shooters: their motivations, their mentality, their social locations, and contributing community factors. This book is both personal, because Lieberman lived in the affected community, and sociological, because he puts the shootings into a socio-cultural context. His analyses are sensitive, nuanced, and well thought out. To his credit, he does not seek easy answers to a very complex problem. Anybody who wants to gain understanding into rampage shootings in America's schools needs to read this book.
