About the Author
BOB BOND, acknowledged throughout the world as an authority on the teaching of sailing, was training manager to the Royal Yachting Association, and is the author of The R.Y.A. Sailing Manual. He died in March 2010 at the age of seventy-three.

BILL ROBINSON, one of America’s foremost sailors and writers on sailing, was editor of Yachting magazine from 1967 to 1978. Upon leaving Yachting, he joined Cruising World as editor-at-large. He died in April 2007 at the age of eighty-eight.

It's my go-to book

I bought the hardbound first edition of this book in the early '80s. It immediately became my go-to book. When I lost it in a fire, it was the first book in my marine library that I replaced.

I'm pleased that this softbound second edition has the same high-quality illustrations and explanations as the first. In addition, it was updated to be current with the technology and techniques of the 90s (its current copyright).

I was tempted to give it only five stars because it could use another update to 2016. But, I decided that not much has changed since the early 90s (other than that catamarans have taken over the America's Cup and there has been a revolution in sailboat design). However, as that revolution is currently limited, for the most part, to multi-million dollar boats, for the rest of us, beginners and competent alike, who sail more modest yachts, this book is precisely what we need. If I could take only one book with me on a cruise, this would be it.

Extremely comprehensive of almost all aspects of sailing.

Extremely comprehensive of almost all aspects of sailing (but it covers boat trailering very little.) For beginners (you can learn to sail with this) through advanced levels including spinnakers; it covers the range from small OD monohulls, cats, through cruising inboards; weather; navigation & lights; tides; first aid; knots; recovering from various emergencies; entering & leaving difficult moorings; rafting (including it's good manners to walk on the forward part of others' boats to preserve their privacy); anchoring, etc. Experts in any area will want greater detail on a topic but others will be grateful for the help that's here. The 1250 drawings and photos are outstanding for their clarity and illustrative value.

Extremely helpful

I took up sailing this summer, and found that, while no book can replace the physical experience on the boat, one needs an instruction manual to keep up with all the maneuvers and terminology that are thrown at you. The Handbook Of Sailing provides concise and very well organized information, with ample illustrations. It’s the perfect accompanying textbook for someone who’s still trying to learn the lefts and rights of boating.

It would be best used as a resource book

This is an extremely well-researched and footnoted account of each of the World War II theatres and major battles. This is not a casual read, but a lengthy, and well-written book. It would be best used as a resource book, but the writing in stylishly presented.

This helped inspire me to write my own World War II book about 5 brothers, their childhoods and war accomplishment.

Hastings has accomplished a massive achievement and this book is outstanding for a college course text, but it's definitely not a casual read

About the Author
CAROLE WADE earned her Ph.D. in cognitive psychology at Stanford University. She began her academic career at the University of New Mexico, where she taught courses in psycholinguistics and developed the first course at the university on the psychology of gender. She was professor of psychology for ten years at San Diego Mesa College, then taught at College of Marin and Dominican University of California. In addition to this text, she and Carol Tavris have written Psychology; Psychology in Perspective; and The Longest War: Sex Differences in Perspective. Dr. Wade has a long-standing interest in making psychology accessible to students and the general public. In particular, she has focused her efforts on the teaching and promotion of critical-thinking skills, diversity issues, and the enhancement of undergraduate education in psychology. She chaired the APA Board of Educational Affairs’ Task Force on Diversity Issues at the Precollege and Undergraduate Levels of Education in Psychology, as well as the APA’s Public Information Committee; has been a G. Stanley Hall lecturer at the APA convention; and served on the steering committee for the National Institute on the Teaching of Psychology. Dr. Wade is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and of the Association for Psychological Science. When she isn’t busy with her professional activities, she can be found riding the trails of northern California on her Morgan horse, McGregor, or one of his Arabian stable mates, Cond� or Ricochet.

Carol Tavris earned her Ph.D. in the interdisciplinary program in social psychology at the University of Michigan, and as a writer and lecturer she has sought to educate the public about the importance of critical and scientific thinking in psychology. In addition to this text, she and Carole Wade have written Psychology; Psychology in Perspective; and The Longest War: Sex Differences in Perspective. Dr. Tavris is also coauthor, with Elliot Aronson, of Mistakes Were Made (But Not by Me): Why We Justify Foolish Beliefs, Bad Decisions, and Hurtful Acts; and author of The Mismeasure of Woman and Anger: The Misunderstood Emotion. She has written on psychological topics for a wide variety of magazines, journals, edited books, and newspapers, some of which have been collected in Psychobabble and Biobunk: Using psychological science to think critically about popular psychology. Dr. Tavris lectures widely on topics involving science vs. pseudoscience in psychology and psychiatry, on writing about science for the public, and many other subjects of contemporary interest. She has taught in the psychology department at UCLA and at the Human Relations Center of the New School for Social Research in New York. Makes your heart grow 3 sizes

Wow, where to start and how not to put in spoilers! Flames of Frost is book 2 in the 3 part series **ALL STAND ALONE**. This book tells the story of Princess Lark, daughter of Dragon King Lorcan and his Fae Queen Isolde from book 1 Crown of Flames. Larks love comes in the form of a rebel named Blaize, a human who lives in the forest in the trees with the rest of his people. Dire circumstances place the two of them together, we watch their love blossom throughout the story. There are quite a few humorous scenes (protective father, and frightened human), Lark has a way about her that just made me want to pull her into my arms and hug her, but the entire story is written with an abundance of love and a determination to belong and become strong and rise above all that has been the normal for hundreds of dragon years. With every word read in this wonderful book, I was brought from smiles to tears and downright laughter. Although each book can be read as a stand alone, if you are like me and want to read from the very beginning, book 1 is on sale. BUT even if it were not on sale I (meaning myself) would definately purchase it. Flames of Frost will take you into the story to follow in the footsteps of all the characters, and what a bloody good ride it is! Myself, I will be not so patiently waiting for book 3.......Come On, Read it, You know you want to....haha

Fire Breathing Dragons!

I really enjoyed the first story, but this tops it! A wonderful tale! I would recommend this to anyone I know. Intrigue, love, dragons and a great story line all make for a really enjoyable read. I love all Ms. Daemon's work!

About the Author
Air Marshall Bharat Kumar (Retired) is a former Commander-in-Chief of the Southern Air Command of the Indian Air Force. After his retirement in 1997, he settled down in New Delhi, India. Dale DeRemer, Ph.D., is a Gold Seal Flight Instructor and an ATP pilot with more than 20,000 flight hours. Dr. DeRemer was "Seaplane Pilot of the Year" in 1998 and is a Professor Emeritus of Aviation at the University of North Dakota. He lives in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Douglas M. Marshall, JD, is an Assistant Professor and Director of the Aviation Masters Program at the University of North Dakota’s John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences. He teaches airline operations and management, aerospace law, aviation economics, and other courses to both undergraduate and graduate students.

not detailed as expected

I purchased the item for its illustrated+wordings combined explanation on aviation terms. But it turned out that the dictionary covered a quantitative of words instead of a set of qualitative explanations.

Good thing about this book: I can find most of the aviation terms in the book.

Bad thing about this book: As a beginner larning about aviation, the dictionary is not indepth enough to solve the questions in my mind. Explanation is not detailed but rather a touch of the surface.

Happy with this book

nicely done. Binding on this copy seems a little light. Bought it as a gift for a secodn language aircraft mechanic/engineer to use as reference for aviation terms. Content seems good with a lot of pilot and navigation content and mechanical content as well.
