Legendary gambler Amarillo Slim Preston, who captured the World Series of Poker in 1972 and has legitimately snookered more money out of more people than most of us make in a lifetime, steers clear of elaborating on the particulars of such games as Texas Hold 'Em in this off-the-cuff, even flighty tour through his often literally death-defying adventures. Since he's played with the likes of Evel Knievel, Willie Nelson and Minnesota Fats, it is a smooth narrative decision on Preston's part to devote his folksy charm to describing the various characters he has encountered, not the mechanics of how he always beat them (his first rule for poker success is "Play the players more than you play the cards"). He was eventually able to make a career out of gambling, sending his three children to college and leading a comfortable life on his winnings (perhaps the most revealing episode arrives late in the memoir when the nationally known gambler who charmed the now- deceased drug lord Pablo Escobar talks about his joy in coaching his children's Little League team). Like all natural-born sharps, though, Preston knows the virtue of keeping his cards close to his chest, which is a fine strategy at the poker table, but a poor narrative one. Passing phrases such as "I got into some tax trouble" are left curiously unexplained while the author's more self-aggrandizing adventures garner elaborate attention. But when an author has won $2 million from Larry Flynt, and tells the story of it so good-naturedly, readers will pardon the selective nature of his reminiscences.

Although this autobiography is a bit heavy on the braggadocio, Slim and coauthor Dinkin provide a stacked deck of amusing anecdotes guaranteed to bring a smile to the toughest poker face. As readers follow Slim from his school days in Arkansas and Texas all the way up to a near-fatal fall he took in the Idaho backcountry last year at age 74, they'll pick up a gambling education as well, learning how to hustle the suckers by guessing which sugar cube a fly will land on, or by hitting a golf ball a mile. The Only Book that made me money the day after I read it

In the Bill Clinton School of Public Policy they make all new students recommend three books to the other students. This would be one of my three. It's not just about gambling but about strategy. It shows how winning isn't about luck but putting the odds in your favor or not playing at all. There are endless great stories in this book and I wish he'd of kept them coming because each one is a gem. This book is not about one man's personality but about the history of gambling mix with really good theories about life and making money. After reading this book I went out and immediately made money by making sure I was a winner before I even bet. Every salesman and politician should have to read this book!

Slim chance you won't like Amarillo Slim

I've read the reviews of others and agree with some of their comments. Slim is arrogant and his stories are all self-serving. Would you expect any less from a Texas gambler? Secondly, does this minor annoyance diminish the entertainment value of the book?

In this book you will get a little bit of history, some good stories (or tall tales), and nothing about his losses. Slim gives us an interesting perspective on the birth and growth of Las Vegas. It's from the user rather than the common mob, business, or political points of view. He tells us stories about some of the people he's gambled against (and won), from jailhouse thugs, Minnesota Fats, Jimmy the Greek, Pablo Escobar, and many in-between. Slim writes nothing about gambling losses and only hints at his battles with the IRS. Though I think a balanced biography is not what the author was shooting for and would have diminish the book as a whole.

Overall, this is a highly entertaining book. It's an easy read. Most importantly, you don't have to know how to play poker, pool, or gamble any other way to enjoy it.

A great book by Eagleton but it is simply a reprint of a book published back in 2000. It is advertised as a new and original study, so be forewarned if you have Eagleton's earlier "The Idea of Culture."

About the Author

Shalom Yoran was born in Poland. After Nazis killed his parents, he and his brother fought as partisans against the German war machine. In 1946, Yoran moved to Israel to begin a new life.

A well written story. Consise and able to take the reader on a journey. Full of lessons in life, and examples of what a person is able to live thru and do in their life.

Amazing perspective from a person who was not only able to survive unbelievable odds but do so with a determination and stile.

A vivid and memorable account of survival and fighting back

The Defiant: A True Story Of Escape, Survival & Resistance is the personal memoir of Shalom Yoran, a young man who dared to become a Jewish resistance fighter in Poland during the grim years of World War II. Yoran's story (and the story of the brave men and women who fought with him), is brought forward from a manuscript which he drafted fifty years ago while recuperating in an Israeli hospital. A vivid and memorable account of survival and fighting back in spite of atrocity and anti-Semitism on all sides, The Defiant is a welcome and highly recommended addition to World War II History collections, Holocaust Studies, and 20th Century Jewish History reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

Survival For a Dream

The Defiant is the story of Shalom Yoran (born Selim Sznycer)

, and his time spent with the partisans fighting the Nazis in Poland. After three years on the run , with his family , from Nazi mobile killing units , the Nazi terror finally caught up with them and in the little town of Kurzeniec , 1 040 Jewish men , women and children where dragged from their homes and hiding places , murdered and burned. Included among those slaughtered where Selim's parents.

Selim and his brother escaped into the woods and joined the partisans , and heeded the last words of their mother to survive and take vengeance for them.

This is the story of the partisan guerilla warfare against Nazi terror.

Although Selim fought among non-Jews , he always fought first and foremost as a Jew - with them but not as one of them. He dreamed of having his own country , of fighting for it and even dying for it-that is what kept him alive. The dream of surviving and living in the Land of Israel as a free Jew and building it.

After the war , his dream was fulfilled , and having escaped the Soviet Army that tried to draft him , and the British blockade that tried to keep Jews out of Palestine , he settled in Israel and joined the airforce , becoming a prominent businessman in Israel.

Good series but needs editing

I'm enjoying this series and I hope many more are planned. The author either needs a good editor or needs to rely less on spell-check and more on her own, or someone else's, eyes (it's, 'clothes', not ' cloths, and one sits on a couch, not a 'cough'). There are words missing on every few pages, mostly adverbs, and some sentences flip from past tense to present tense and back again. Overall though, I look forward to more of this series.

Not Angsty in the least!

Let me begin this review with the warning label of "talk of abuse and rape" to urge you to not use this warning as a deterrent to reading this installment to the Saint Lakes series. Yes, there are the two elements but they are TALKED about, it does not actually unfold right before your eyes. That said, let's move on.

Sage is a snake shifter and had been abused and raped consistently by the vampires who took him for their own pleasure. We first met him in the first book, Leave It All (Saint Lakes #1), as that flirtatious waiter whom Lucas took a disliking to before ending up as good friends. Garridan, a dragon shifter Bennett thought to have died or disappeared a long, long time ago, came in as the man rescued by their Alpha, Ramsey. The same man who Benentt had called uncle, his father's best friend and his savior. Garridan, too, had been used and much abused. In his case, he stayed in dragon form for years and those who follow shifter stories are familiar with the dangers of staying in their shifted form too long. Garridan is feared by all as feral and doubly dangerous for his power is more than the Saint Lakes alpha.

This book opens where the first book ends and we are thrust into the story from Sage's eyes. His feelings, his fears, his trauma and PTSD all take a toll on his psyche. It is especially difficult for him because he knew Garridan was his mate.

The two men have a difficult time sorting through their past traumas but as mating calls go, it's pretty hard to ignore. The mating is also working great for them as they turn to each other for comfort and ease each others' pain when the PTSD strikes.

Despite the angst of this story line, I was quite amazed this was a fast read. Then again, author April Kelley has the talent of getting the plot going on a fast pace. The only thing that bothered me were the glaring typos and some editing issues. Fortunately, even knowing they were there, it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the love story between dragon and snake.

Note: I really, honest to goodness hate hate with a passion hate snakes but Sage is an exemption to this rule and is loveable. Also, there's no snake sex so that is an added bonus. (Just had to get that out there because I can hear the questions)

Very Mesmerizing Series!

I am totally hooked on this series. The characters are extraordinary (and there are so many of them), humorous, caring, and full of love and support. Sage is a snake shifter who was raped and abused by vampires, and his dragon mate, Garridan, was kidnapped and held for years by those vampires. Sage is traumatized by his experience and can't handle the thought of anyone touching him except for his mate. Together they begin to heal through each other and it's just so sweet and even sexy. I loved the interaction between the two of them, as well as the other characters who were so cute and funny throughout the story. There are so many shifters and it's such an entertaining read. What I love most about this book is how people are finding their mates. That's undoubtedly my favorite part of any shifter and vampire book. There may have been a few editing issues but nothing that was too serious. I was so engaged with the whole plot that I wouldn't really have cared anyway. The story progressed at a great pace and I can't wait to see what happens next with Ladon and Magnus as well as the others. I hope that the alpha of this family finds his mate also. I just love that whole process of the fated mate pull. Incredibly magnetic and spine tingling. :)

This is another "MUST HAVE" book for ALL DENTISTS and DENTAL SPECIALISTS as well as Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons (Residents/Attendings/Private Practicioners), Otorhinolaryngologists, Plastic/Reconstructive Surgeons, Family Medicine/Internal Medicine and Oncologists (As we all have to treat patients on these drugs).

Short, Concise and Filled with Excellent Case Examples this book is an easy, informative and enjoyable read.

Interesting articles, awkward editing

It is a nice collection of sixty, mostly short, articles and other texts by Einstein, mainly from the 'thirties and 'forties. They are ordered by main subject matter, not chronologically. Quite enjoyable reading. What I didn't like in the Kindle edition is that each article is presented under its title only, without a date or source reference. The date of publication does appear after the titles in the table of contents, and a list of sources are presented in the last section called "Acknowledgements". Looking at this list one discovers that the dates of publication stated there apparently correspond to the antologies the editors used as sources for the articles, which is not necessarily the original publication date of each article. Nothing is said about the context of the articles, except for a few cases. This arrangement is annoying, because knowing the original publication date is crucial for the understanding of the context in which Einstein wrote, particularly in political matters. And having to hop back and forth from the articles to the Acknowledgements list in Kindle in order to find the date and context is a nuisance.

Very interesting writings, on a variety of topics, by one of heroes. Very insightful. Not always fun or easy reading, but very thoughtful and educational. Einstein was not just E=mc2. A nice chance to "visit" with a great man.

Out of My Later Years

This was an excellent peek into the mind of Einstein the Humanist. The mathematics were far above my head, but the understanding of the relative position of man in society was not. I am humbled by the love of mankind and the positive expectation that man will accept a moral imperative and move forward through cooperation of science and religion. I was only slightly aware of this side of Einstein and now understand why he was so beloved.

althought the title misleads slighty, the content has some useful current info for people looking to live free and cheap. The ebike section is too long but thats likely because i know nothing about them otherwise. But a four star sounds bout right
