Anyone Can Read and Apply to Any Decision Starting Today!
By John M. Alexander
Get Wise is a book for the everyday man and woman. Written in practical and down-to-earth narrative, author and pastor Bob Merritt delivers a guide to making great decisions from a Godly and biblical perspective. Taking his cue from Proverbs, Bob provides biblical reflections on how to make wise decisions on issues ranging from finances and parenting to relationships and sex. Even better, Bob lives what he writes and preaches. He is one of the wisest leaders and pastors I've had the privilege of knowing. The best part is knowing that what he writes he lives, wrestles with, and even struggles with himself. He is as authentic as it gets. By the end of the book, more importantly, you will know more of what Jesus is like and what it means to make great, Godly, wise decisions. No matter your age, read this book!

These are coaching clients who lead busy lives and need smart and effective ways to guide their decisions and life ...
By Penny Hegseth
Everyday, I meet with people who are looking for positive and wise action in their lives. These are coaching clients who lead busy lives and need smart and effective ways to guide their decisions and life choices. It's not easy to recommend a good book on how to do this. But now, this is one of my top "go to" books.
This book is a must read for anyone who wants to move from good to great in their personal, spiritual and professional life. It's for anyone seeking to self-manage weaknesses. His engaging and personal stories will jump off the page and meet the reader exactly where they are. His chapter topics are relevant and timely, challenging the reader to desire not only a whole life, but a holy one.
The wisest thing a person could do is read and reread this book.

Wisdom shared from experience.
By Jon Gibson
Solomon was the wisest man who ever lived, so it should follow that anything he said should be paid some mind. Despite his imperfections and some of his major mistakes, Bob Merritt still believes that there is a lot to be gained by heeding the advice that Solomon readily doled out within the wisdom books which he wrote, primarily Proverbs. In “Get Wise,” Merritt shares some of his own gleanings from both what Solomon wrote and from his own experience.

Merritt believes that decisions can be detrimental to the direction which our lives take. In fact, he says that there are two pain streams in which we can live: learning from our own pain or learning from the pain of others. Wouldn’t it be so much better if we learned from the mistakes of others rather than having to make our own mistakes?

If we make good decisions, we are likely to head in a good direction. If we make bad decisions, we are more likely to head in a bad direction. If we use the wisdom that God gives us and learn from our experiences and the experiences of others, we can make great decisions every day. Bob Merritt shares on such topics as work ethics, friendships, money, parenting, anger, sex, marriage, and other topics as well. His sharing comes from a place of humility and from his own experiences. He never claims to be an expert but shares the things that he learned from both his successes and failures.

Merritt shares pointers and helpful hints, listing out some things to try in some of these various areas to have success. He shares the importance of relationships and how important it is to surround yourself with people of character who will help you to grow and rise to their level. Merritt offers some great nuggets to be treasured and used.

My one struggle with the book was that even in the midst of his mostly humble approach, Merritt seems to make countless references to his church and the staff there. I appreciate that he counts himself fortunate and grateful for what God has done through him and his church, but at times, the references seem excessive, making it seem as though Eagle Brook Church may trump Disney as the “happiest place on earth” and that if you aren’t a part of it then you aren’t living.

While Merritt doesn’t say anything earth shattering or even new here, the wisdom that he shares is worthwhile to remember or even be reminded of. There’s enough within the book from which to get some good and practical advice and pointers to live a life of good decisions.

(This review is based upon a copy of this book which was provided free of charge from Baker Books. These opinions are my own; I was not required to write a positive review, nor was I compensated for this review.)

Clymer shop manual
By David Santee
I've bought Clymer manuals for every motorcycle I've ever owned, which is many.
As I like to do as much work on my bikes as possible, it's nice to have an
illustrated step-by-step book to guide me through whatever I'm planning to do.
Clymers books are reasonably priced, on Amazon anyway, and well worth having, even
if you're only going to do basic repairs.

Disturbing, humorously chilling, ultimately brilliant!
By A Customer
I first read, or tried to read, "In His Own Write" when I was 14, at boarding school in England. Tears rolled down my cheeks! It was impossible to read the stories out loud to any hapless listener without collapsing into hysteria. The book was already out of print then, 1973. An instant collector's item! Greatly coveted! Years later I came across paperbacks of both books, sadly, in the wake of JL's tragic death. They took pride of place in my library. I lost them, or somebody stole them, a few years ago and I miss them more than any other book that's similarly walked from my home, now in the USA. I cannot recommend these works highly enough to anyone who appreciates offbeat humour. 5 stars really aren't enough for material SO brilliant and SO unique. The man and his work were, quite simply, pure genius.

A Subtle Genius, In His Own Write...
By 4-Legged Defender
Commemorating what would have been John Lennon's 70th birthday, this reissue of his two forays into writing circa 1964 and '65 are a great way to celebrate the genius and memory of one of history's most celebrated men of the 20th century. Having both books in one edition is a definite plus (I still have an original 'In His Own Write' since I was a kid, but somewhere lost the second volume), and revisiting his writings that would later become the template for lyrics to such psychedelic classics as 'I Am The Walrus', 'Strawberry Fiends Forever', 'All You Need Is Love', 'Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite', 'Happiness Is A Warm Gun', 'Come Together' and other songs is a treat above all. Think Lewis Carroll as a rocker on acid in the 60's and you'll have a feel for these works. It's alternately witty, daft, funny, sarcastic, prosaic, confusing, oblique and brilliant. The drawings are a lark as well. If you didn't grow up with the Beatles, you probably won't find much pleasure in these pages, but if you did, it's like returning to OZ to see the Wizard. Long Live Lennon.

Buried Alive: The Terrifying History of Our Most Primal Fear, by Jan Bondeson Ph.D.

"A necrobibliac classic: it may keep you up all night―not from fear but from fascination."―Kirkus Reviews, starred review

Readers of Edgar Allan Poe's tales―just think of The Premature Burial―may comfort themselves with the notion that Poe must have exaggerated: surely people of the 1800s could not have been at risk of being buried alive? But such stories filled medical journals as well as fiction, and fear in the populace was high. It was speculated, from the number of skeletons found in horrific, contorted positions inside their coffins, that ten out of every one hundred people were buried before they were dead. With over fifty illustrations, Buried Alive explores the medicine, folklore, history, and literature of Europe and the United States to uncover why such fears arose and whether they were warranted. "A weird and wonderful little tome."―Salon.com "Bondeson weaves a strange disturbing, and weirdly enthralling tale. Cremation never sounded so good."―Lingua Franca "A most useful and entertaining book....Deserves a place on every bedside table in America."―Patrick McGrath, author of Martha Peake: A Novel of the Revolution More than 50 illustrations

Amazon.com Review
What could be worse than waking up in a dark, confined space and realizing that you are in a sealed coffin? Jan Bondeson details the history--factual and fictional--of this primal fear in Buried Alive.

Premature burial has a long literary history, from Boccaccio's Decameron to Romeo and Juliet to Wilkie Collins's Jezebel's Daughter and, of course, Edgar Allan Poe's "Premature Burial" and other works. Macabre tales of narrow escapes owing to grave robbers and lazy gravediggers, as well as horrific stories of exhumed coffins containing bloodied, contorted corpses, were common in both the medical and the lay press in the 18th and 19th centuries. Bondeson shows how these stories reflected public fears--fears caused in part by the development of resuscitation techniques for drowning victims, which fed a growing doubt in the reliability of prevailing signs of death. The medical community was divided on the issue; some were offended that the general public doubted their ability to determine death. Others, however, searched for definitive signs of death, many of which seem ludicrous today (one suggestion involved sticking the finger of a suspected corpse in the doctor's ear; if life remained the doctor would hear a faint buzzing sound). Bondeson also describes, in gleeful detail, other systems developed to prevent premature burial, including elaborate security coffins with signaling devices inside. More remarkable are the "Leichenhuser" or waiting mortuaries where corpses were kept in warm rooms until putrefaction was evident. Each corpse had a number of strings or wires attached to its fingers and toes, so that the slightest twitch would sound an alarm and medical aid could be brought immediately. These Leichenhuser were built in many cities in German-speaking Europe; one built in Munich in 1808 featured both a common and a luxury section and was open to the public (Mark Twain visited in the 1880s); the Vienna Leichenhus used an electronic warning system (though not in its separate section for suicides, it's interesting to note); and two were built in Stuttgart as late as 1875.

Were these precautions necessary? No "patient" ever actually revived while in any of the German waiting mortuaries, but Bondeson does describe some documented near-miss cases from the 20th century in which supposed corpses were revived. Throughout the book, Bondeson recounts old wives' tales, urban legends, and scientific study with equal levels of straightforwardness and humor--and, perhaps, a slight smirk. Though it's not for the squeamish (which is perhaps an unnecessary warning; what squeamish person is going to read a book about premature burial?), Buried Alive is an entertaining and eminently readable look at this little-known history. --Sunny Delaney

From Publishers Weekly
"The huge modern textbooks on forensic medicine... choose to ignore the fact that less than 150 years ago many medical practitioners freely admitted to being uncertain whether their patients were dead or alive." As the author (whose excellent The London Monster was published in December; see Forecasts, Nov. 20, 2000) shows in this engrossing yet disappointing book, the fear of accidentally being buried alive reverberated throughout 18th- and 19th-century Europe and the United States, and even continued into the 20th century. Hundreds of stories about people being discovered buried alive circulated in medical journals, literature (from the medieval Decameron to Edgar Allan Poe) and popular lore. This fear spurred doctors to debate when life ends, and motivated Germany to create mortuaries in the 1800s in which corpses rotted for days before they could be interred. In 1822, another German invented a "security coffin," in which a person buried prematurely could breathe through a tube by triggering a mechanism. The subject is fascinating, and Bondeson, a medical doctor, is thorough in discussing the alleged cases. The "shameful past of medical science with regard to the certainty of the signs of death" was, indeed, a real problem. Yet he readily acknowledges that the numbers of those buried alive were "exaggerated." If that is true, as by his own account it appears to be, then a book that studied the fear itself and what factors affected this deep-rooted dread might have been more fruitful. The few pages where Bondeson does this--where, for instance, he discusses the impact of the coffin's development in the 17th and 18th centuries--are where his subject truly comes, well, alive. 30 illus.. (Mar.)Forecast: It worked for Poe and it'll work for Bondeson. This book, cleverly rich with illustrations, will not only sell well in hardcover but could prove a hit down the road in trade paperback.

From Library Journal
Except for tabloid reporters and fans of Edgar Allan Poe, few Americans today give a thought to an obsession that haunted their ancestors, the possibility of premature burial. Expanding a chapter in his recent A Cabinet of Medical Curiosities (LJ 10/15/97), Bondeson, a physician with a Ph.D. in experimental medicine, explores this terror and the facts behind it. Fear of premature burial as a public concern emerged in Europe in the late 18th century, as religion yielded to rationalism and physicians realized that there was no infallible indication of death except decay. Alarmists asserted that as many as one in ten bodies was buried alive, and well-publicized panics waxed and waned for two centuries, emerging most recently in response to "brain death" as a new medical standard for the end of life. As late as the 1970s, an entrepreneur marketed a security coffin, perfect for librarians, that included books to allow the newly revived to pass the time constructively while awaiting the welcome scrape of a rescuing shovel. Thankfully, Bondeson concludes that, except in sensational journalism and Gothic fiction, mistaken burials were actually extremely rare. Although claustrophobics should beware, readers in most libraries will find this book both unusual and fascinating.DKathy Arsenault, Univ. of South Florida at St. Petersburg

This book presents a fairly gruesome subject in a manner that makes it difficult to put the book down. This history of one of humanity's greatest fears makes for a very informative and interesting ("lively"?) read.

A Fascinating Exploration of the Fear of Premature Burial
By A Customer
In the early part of the seventeenth century, Jacques-Benigne Winslow, a Danish anatomist who lived and taught in Paris, claimed that, "it is evident from Experience, that many apparently dead, have afterwards proved themselves alive by rising from their shrouds, their coffins, and even from their graves." Winslow suggested that the means for determining death were unreliable and, hence, there was a widespread risk of being buried alive. Winslow went on to write a detailed compendium of alleged cases of premature burial, mixing fact with folklore and creating a kind of Ur-text for what subsequently became both a widespread popular fear in Western Europe and an at-times respected (if sometimes eccentric) intellectual and social movement for measures to eliminate the risk of premature burial.
In "Buried Alive", Dr. Jan Bondeson, professor at the University of Wales College of Medicine, traces the history of the fear of premature burial in Western Europe and the United States, a fear that attained its clearest popular expression in the macabre literature of writers such as Edgar Allen Poe, but which had a much more significant, albeit less well known, intellectual history. Beginning with Winslow's treatise, which was written in Latin and known by few outside the Parisian medical profession, Bondeson carefully explores how Winslow's work was translated into French, and popularized, in the mid-eighteenth century by Jean-Jacques Bruhier, another French physician. While Winslow's Latin treatise would have been confined to the dusty archives of history, Bruhier was a great popularizer and his translation and expansion of Winslow's book was widely read and translated in France and other countries of Western Europe. From this popularization, there developed a widespread popular fear of premature burial, as well as a legitimate medical debate about how to determine whether a person was dead or alive.
The popular fear and the professional debate went through many iterations. In Germany, Christopher Wilhelm Hufeland, a practicing physician, published an article in 1790 which outlined a plan to erect a house for the dead in his hometown of Weimar. The idea was based upon the general belief that the only reliable means of determining death was the onset of putrefaction. Popularizing an idea originally suggested in Bruhier's work, Hufeland's proposal was avidly endorsed within Germany and led to the construction of numerous waiting mortuaries or "Leichenhauser", where the dead were attached to alarm devices to detect movement and identify those who were not, in fact, dead and also to observe the onset of putrefaction. Indeed, Leichenhauser continued to exist into the twentieth century in Germany.
In England and the United States, both the popular and medical concern about premature burial arrived much later. Indeed, it was only in the nineteenth century that the English and Americans began to give any credence to the fear and to the medical issue and, even then, it largely became the short-lived domain of spiritualists and charlatans. It did result, however, in the development of a number of ingenious security vaults and other coffins and burial devices intended to allow the person buried alive to survive and signal those in the world of the living of their grim fate. Perhaps the most well known of these devices was the so-called "Bateson's Belfry", a coffin which allowed its still living inhabitant to ring a bell that stood above the grave, presumably permitting a post-interment rescue.
"Buried Alive" is a fascinating and methodical exploration of the fear and the intellectual and social history surrounding the idea of premature burial in Western Europe and the United States from the eighteenth century to the present. However, unlike Bondeson's earlier work, "A Cabinet of Medical Curiosities", which never ceased to fascinate and entertain, "Buried Alive" is much more like an academic treatise, a book which certainly has suitable rewards for the reader, but which is written in prose that is dry as bone.

Amphigorey Collection (Amphigorey & Amphigorey Too), by Edward Gorey

The titles of this deliciously creepy collection of Gorey's work stems from the word amphigory, meaning a nonsense verse or composition. As always, Gorey's painstakingly cross- hatched pen and ink drawings are perfectly suited to his oddball verse and prose. Many of Gorey's tales involve untimely deaths and dreadful mishaps, but much like tragic Irish ballads with their perky rhythms and melodies, they come off as strangely lighthearted. An eccentric, funny book for either the uninitiated or diehard Gorey fans.

This book catalogs over 1,200 different items given for charitable donations to 17 different groups within Germany from 1933 to 1945. These items are displayed in over 1,150 color pictures. The items represented in this book fall into two major categories. The first category includes items from organizations other than the Winterhilfswerk des Deutschen Volkes (WHW). The second category includes items given out in the name of the WHW by surrogate groups. These groups and the number of items cataloged are: Non-WHW organizations: - Deutsche Jugendherbergwerk (DJH): German Youth Hostels - Deutsches Luftsportverband (DLV) - Deutsches Rotes Kreuz (DRK): German Red Cross - Volksbund fr das Deutschtum im Ausland (VDA) - Bergwacht: Mountain Rescue - Caritas - Deutscher - Flottenverband - Erntedankfest - Hitler Jugend Plastic Athletes - Innere Mission - Mutter und Kind - Reichsmtterdienst - Reichsluftschutzbund - Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgrberfrsorge Surrogate groups: - Opferschiessen fr das WHW - Tag der Deutschen Polizei fr das Winterhilfswerk (TdP): German Police Day for the WHW - Tag der Wehrmacht fr das Winterhilfswerk (TdW): Armed Forces Day for the WHW The tokens distributed by the organizations in both categories often are identified by buyers and sellers as WHW items, so these items often are generically referred to as WHWs. This book does not cover the WHW National or Gau collections unless these National or Gau items fall into the surrogate group category. The National WHW items can be found in "Winterhilfswerk National Street Collections and More: A Collector's Guide."

Excellent reference book for the WHW collector!
By Gary Munson
Superb reference book for Third Reich memorabilia, with its focus on WHW donation badges, pins, etc. The book is well-organized and nicely constructed; however, the large color photos are invaluable in making identification of a huge array of collectibles. Finally, the design of the book - a checklist itemization and the wire binder - lends itself for use as a collector's portable reference to his collection. All in all, a fine work!

Golden Voice George Guidall has carved another notch in his belt with Dean Koontz's latest thriller. Guidall's rich voice moves the story over the rough spots, especially where Koontz rambles a bit. Guidall's demeanor is at once grandfatherly and wise, with a tinge of sadness that lends humanity to the work. The story is creepy, even by Koontz standards. A 3-year-old girl is kidnapped by her scientist father, who conducts sensory deprivation experiments on her that are designed to release hidden psychokinetic powers. He succeeds beyond all expectations, and the child becomes the center of a maelstrom of terror. It's a good work made great by Guidall. As always. The Door To December
Nathan Fuller 510 pages
The book, Door To December, is a suspenseful novel. Dean Koontz does a remarkable job in explaining the detailed events of the story. The story is about a little girl named Melanie who was kidnapped by her father at the age of three. During her time with her father, Melanie was subject to tortures beyond imagination. The story takes place the morning of three brutal murders at the house where Melanie and her father were residing. Melanie's mother, Laura, had just been notified of the homicides and had arrived at the house. There, a police officer named Dan Haldane informed her of what had happened. He also told her that a girl, around the age of nine, had been found wandering the streets nude and oblivious to world around. Melanie's mother told the officer to take her immediately to the place where she was after they were finished at the house. While there Melanie's mother identified her brutalized husband and toured the house until she came to the Gray Room. This room was filled with a sensory deprivation chamber, an electric chair, and other forms of torture. After the house, Laura went to the place where Melanie was and was reunited with her. One thing was wrong though, Melanie was in an autistic, almost catatonic state. From there, Laura, Dan, Melanie and a bodygaurd named Earl, search for the truth behind Melanie's lost past. Along the way, they are being chased by an invisible creature that has been committing all of these murders. They soon find that the answers to this troubling mystery lies within the unknown Door to December.

Above-Average Early Novel by Koontz
By Thriller Lover
THE DOOR TO DECEMBER, published in 1985, is one of the last books written by Dean Koontz under another name ("Richard Paige"). This psychological suspense novel was written a few years before Koontz became a major superstar in the book world. This book was re-released and updated in the 1990s under Koontz's own name; this re-released version is what you will find on the shelf.

This book is an enjoyable one. Koontz is fond of the topic of mind control, and there is a lot of interesting subject matter here about psychology and even the occult. My major criticism about this book is that it's too long and drags a bit in the middle. The big revelation toward the end is also somewhat predictable. Still, THE DOOR TO DECEMBER is well written and very suspenseful toward the end.

I would rank this novel in the top half of Koontz' body of work. Enjoyable, but not one of his best.

If you like this novel, you may want to try THE KEY TO MIDNIGHT, which deals with a somewhat similar theme. If you've never tried Koontz before, I would strongly recommend trying some of Koontz's best books first, such as WATCHERS, ODD THOMAS, PHANTOMS and INTENSITY.

I was basically bolted to my seat for 2 days while reading

engrossed in the book that I was able to finish it in

me reading until all hours of the day and night. Highly

The Imperial Cruise: A Secret History of Empire and War, by James Bradley

In 1905 President Teddy Roosevelt dispatched Secretary of War William Howard Taft on the largest U.S. diplomatic mission in history to Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines, China, and Korea. Roosevelt's glamorous twenty-one year old daughter Alice served as mistress of the cruise, which included senators and congressmen. On this trip, Taft concluded secret agreements in Roosevelt's name.

In 2005, a century later, James Bradley traveled in the wake of Roosevelt's mission and discovered what had transpired in Honolulu, Tokyo, Manila, Beijing and Seoul.

In 1905, Roosevelt was bully-confident and made secret agreements that he though would secure America's westward push into the Pacific. Instead, he lit the long fuse on the Asian firecrackers that would singe America's hands for a century.

From Publishers Weekly
Theodore Roosevelt steers America onto the shoals of imperialism in this stridently disapproving study of early 20th-century U.S. policy in Asia. Bestselling author of Flags of Our Fathers, Bradley traces a 1905 voyage to Asia by Roosevelt's emissary William Howard Taft, who negotiated a secret agreement in which America and Japan recognized each other's conquests of the Philippines and Korea. (Roosevelt's flamboyant, pistol-packing daughter Alice went along to generate publicity, and Bradley highlights her antics.) Each port of call prompts a case study of American misdeeds: the brutal counterinsurgency in the Philippines; the takeover of Hawaii by American sugar barons; Roosevelt's betrayal of promises to protect Korea, which greenlighted Japanese expansionism and thus makes him responsible for Pearl Harbor. Bradley explores the racist underpinnings of Roosevelt's policies and paradoxical embrace of the Japanese as Honorary Aryans. Bradley's critique of Rooseveltian imperialism is compelling but unbalanced. He doesn't explain how Roosevelt could have evicted the Japanese from Korea, and insinuates that the Japanese imperial project was the brainstorm of American advisers. Ironically, his view of Asian history, like Roosevelt's, denies agency to the Asians themselves. Photos, maps. One-day laydown.(Nov. 24)

From Booklist
Bradley’s first books, Flags of Our Fathers (2000) and Flyboys (2003), were sensationally popular World War II combat stories. His new one, about U.S.-Japanese diplomacy in 1905, represents a departure. Asserting a causal connection between diplomatic understandings reached then and war 36 years later, Bradley dramatizes his case with a delegation Theodore Roosevelt dispatched to Japan in the summer of 1905. Led by Secretary of War William Taft and ornamented by the president’s quotable daughter Alice, it sailed while TR hosted the peace conference between victorious Japan and defeated Russia. As he recounts the itinerary of Taft’s cruise, Bradley discusses attitudes of social Darwinism and white superiority that were then prevalent and expressed by TR and Taft. They modified their instincts, Bradley argues, in dealing with nonwhite Japan, and secretly conceded it possession of Korea. This is what Bradley asserts was a prerequisite to Pearl Harbor in 1941, a dubious thesis when the tensions of the 1930s stemmed from general Japanese aggressiveness, not its control of Korea per se. Bradley does fine on 1905 but falters when predicting the future. --Gilbert Taylor

Review
TERRIFIC PRAISE FOR THE IMPERIAL CRUISE:

"James Bradley's incendiary new book...is startling enough to reshape conventional wisdom about Roosevelt's presidency...In Flags of Our Fathers he wrote about how his father helped plant the American flag on the island of Iwo Jima during World War II. In The Imperial Cruise he asks why American servicemen like his father had to be fighting in the Pacific at all."―Janet Maslin, New York Times

"A provocative study...What is fascinating about Bradley's reconstruction of a largely neglected aspect of Roosevelt's legacy is the impact that his racial theories and his obsession with personal and national virility had on his diplomacy. Engrossing and revelatory, The Imperial Cruise is revisionist history at its best."―Ronald Steel, New York Times Book Review

"[Bradley's] ingenious narrative thread is to track an across-the-pacific 1905 goodwill voyage by Roosevelt's emissaries....[his indictment of Roosevelt] raises tantalizing questions."―Gene santoro, American History

"For readers under the impression that history is the story of good guys and bad guys, and that Americans are always the former, this book could be useful medicine."―Rick Hampson, USA Today

"A page-turner with solidly attributed eye-opening passages."―Mike Householder, Associated Press

"Engaging...this is a book to admire and, it must be said, to enjoy."

―David M. Shribman, The Boston Globe

U.S.-Japan relations, Baron Kaneko and President Roosevelt
By Ian Ruxton
I downloaded the Kindle edition of this book and right away read Chapter 8 on Theodore Roosevelt's flattering and self-interested secret proposal to the Japanese Government of a 'Japanese Monroe Doctrine' for Asia, in essence a private invitation to play the imperialist game which, as Baron Kaneko later lamented in a paper written in 1932, Roosevelt never admitted making or endorsed and took to his grave in 1919, despite promising to Kaneko in a farewell lunch at Sagamore Hill on September 10, 1905 that he would publicly announce it after he left office.

Other reviewers have pointed out that there is not much about the cruise undertaken by W.H. Taft and Alice Roosevelt in this book, and I feel it is mainly a convenient device to tell a tale which is really expressed in the sub-title 'A Secret History of Empire and War.' There are in fact two main narrative threads here: a rather gruesome and to many readers upsetting one about American imperialist ambitions and 'westering' colonization of the Pacific (Hawaii) and East Asia (the Philippines), and another to me more interesting one about U.S.-Japan relations. This review will focus on the latter.

James Bradley has done an excellent and well-researched job of presenting the history in detail of the exchanges between Kaneko and Roosevelt, though he seems unaware, or at least does not mention, that Kentaro Kaneko (1853-1942) had already met Theodore Roosevelt before 1904 through an introduction arranged by Harvard-educated William Sturgis Bigelow (1850-1926), the Bostonian collector of Japanese art. They first met in 1890 when Roosevelt was Head of the Civil Service Commission and Kaneko was returning to Japan via the U.S. after studying Western parliamentary systems in Europe, and the two Harvard men maintained an occasional correspondence - letters and Christmas greetings - thereafter. (See my translation published recently of Masayoshi Matsumura's Baron Kaneko and the Russo-Japanese War (1904-05): A Study in the Public Diplomacy of Japan for further details.)

The idea of a 'Japanese Monroe Doctrine' influenced the Japanese Government leaders and encouraged them to follow America's example as their 'sensei' (teacher), yet it was surely not proposed for Japan's benefit, but for that of the United States. It made perfect sense at the time for Roosevelt to persuade Japan to keep the European powers (including 'Slavic' Russia) at bay and check their expansion into East Asia, while assuring the 'Open Door' in China for American commerce. And Japan was, of course, warned in clear language to stay away from the Philippines, America's largest colony. (Kaneko responded that Japan had her hands full with Taiwan, acquired in 1895 from China, and had no designs on the Philippines.) As Roosevelt wrote privately to his son in February 1904, Japan was "playing our game" and the Russo-Japanese War was in essence from his viewpoint a war by proxy.

It is thus quite ironic that Japan's victory over Russia which was widely celebrated in the U.S. as an underdog's triumph marked the high point in U.S.-Japan relations, and from that time they worsened steadily until World War II, having been generally good in the 50 years from Commodore Perry's arrival to open Japan in 1853. Roosevelt's clever and (for his purposes) useful idea of a 'Japanese Monroe doctrine' - first suggested to the Japanese by U.S. diplomat General Charles Le Gendre (1830-99) in the 1870s according to Bradley - was one lesson too many for the willing pupil Japan. The concept tragically and disastrously morphed over time into the uncontrollable juggernaut of Japanese militarism, beginning with the weak buffer state of Korea being abandoned to its fate by T.R. - one of which he apparently approved - and made a Japanese protectorate in late 1905, and from 1910 a full colony (see Ch. 12, 'Sellout in Seoul'). In effect the inventive mind of the President inadvertently sanctioned the creation of a Frankenstein which, as Mr. Bradley indicates, others had to confront and defeat subsequently. (But the line of causation is too long and thin to blame Roosevelt directly for Pearl Harbor, though I am not convinced the author is actually doing so. Was the Pacific War 1941-45 foreseeable back in 1905? Surely not!)

Theodore Roosevelt's publicly proclaimed admiration for Bushido, jujitsu and other aspects of Japanese culture as promoted by Kaneko, not to mention the superb training and remarkable courage of the army and navy, was doubtless in and of itself genuine, but it surely also had the useful result of helping to massage the egos of his Japanese guests, especially the intermediary Baron Kaneko. Interestingly, he wanted the Japanese to win, but not too overwhelmingly, and on August 23, 1905 he wrote confidentially to Kaneko suggesting that Japan should give up any claims to an indemnity in the forthcoming peace conference. When Japan did so and the terms of the Treaty of Portsmouth brokered by Roosevelt were made public there were serious riots by a discontented and disappointed populace in Tokyo (80% of police boxes and two churches destroyed) and throughout Japan. The souring of friendly U.S.-Japan relations surely began at that point. (How many Japanese would have rejoiced at the subsequent award to Roosevelt of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906?)

Roosevelt meanwhile stressed Japan's many positive gains to Kaneko (withdrawal of Russian troops from Manchuria, a lease of the Liaodong peninsula, control of the Southern Manchurian railway, Korea and half of Sakhalin), but also probably shrugged his shoulders and blamed the Japanese leaders for raising the expectations of the Japanese people too high in the case of the indemnity. He may have had a point, since - as Sir Ernest Satow observed from Peking - the Japanese army had not captured enemy territory of sufficient importance (e.g. Vladivostok) which was the usual basis for an indemnity. However, Sergei Witte the chief Russian negotiator outwitted Komura Jutaro at Portsmouth by asking publicly the hypothetical question "If we let you have the whole of Sakhalin, will you still demand an indemnity?" To this Komura replied that Japan would under no circumstances give up the indemnity, which made him seem intransigent in the eyes of the American media. (Thus for Japan, military victory was followed by diplomatic defeat as ten years previously in the Triple Intervention of April 1895 after the Sino-Japanese War, and this only further stoked Japanese resentment and created a time bomb with a long fuse.)

By the way, I should have preferred the author to use "Japanese" rather than the abbreviation "Jap", when using his own - or Roosevelt's - words outside quotations, likewise "Theodore" rather than "Teddy" which seems over-familiar for a historian, albeit an amateur one. The author's frequent use of the term "Aryan" also carries unfortunate and inescapable Nazi resonances, but 100 and more years ago ideas of 'Yellow Peril' originating in Europe were dominant and Caucasians generally feared Asian immigration, especially to California. (There is indeed much ugly and open racism in the early part of the book in quotations and cartoons, and also some stomach-turning accounts of massacres and torture in the Philippines. This inevitably will turn off some readers.) However, these are minor stylistic points and the book is generally an excellent and informative read!

History as harangue
By Bif Bechenschnifter
As other reviewers have pointed out, Bradley relies heavily on secondary sources for his history. One of the sources he quotes liberally is Morris' excellent biography of the young Roosevelt, "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt." Early in "The Imperial Cruise", Bradley says, "The author Edmund Morris thought the Nibelunglied so central to Teddy's life that he used phrases from it as aphorisms to begin each chapter of his first Roosevelt biography." This is not true (each chapter begins with a stanza from Longfellow's "The Saga of King Olaf"), and this misrepresentation is characteristic, I think, of a work that is produced with a flimsy agenda. Bradley stretches, paraphrases, and twists to serve this agenda, and decontextualizes history to provide a narrow enough focus to support his bias. There are entertaining moments in the book, but Bradley is no historian.

Some good hits on Teddy and the politics of the day, but a lot of disappointing "history" and bias
By Brian W. Hayes
Mr. Bradley's book is provocative, and he certainly scores some legitimate hits on the appalling race politics of Roosevelt's time. But I have two major problems with this book:

1) I am deeply disappointed by the bias evident in the "factual" underpinnings of his thesis; Bradley clearly is massaging the facts to fit his simplistic argument in the same way that a 19th century Social Darwinist would. Two concrete examples: during his brief overview of the Mexican War, Bradley refers to the Neuces River as the "internationally recognized border", portraying the US presence there as illegal. The reality is significantly more complicated. Following the Battle of San Jacinto, the Mexican president had signed the "treaty" of Velasco (subsequently renounced by Mexico) recognizing the Rio Grande as the border. No other documents ever concluded the Texas Revolution, so it is safe to say that the border situation was ambiguous; if there was any "recognized" border from 1836 to 1846, it was the Rio Grande. Moreover, there certainly was no United Nations corollary in 1836 to provide the imprinatur of "international recognition" - I would be interested to see any documents from European or Asian legations backing up Bradley's claim.

Second, during his section on Japan, Bradley repeatedly refers to the "closed" period of Tokugawa Japan as a benevolent time where "the samurai class set down their swords and became teachers", where culture flourished and Japan prospered. Again, the reality is significantly more complicated. The Tokugawa shogunate and samurai class acted as feudal landlords over the mass of peasants in a manner that would be familiar to an oppressive 14th century French magnate, and most historians would portray the shogunate after about 1700 as one of social, cultural and economic stagnation. I doubt very much that Bradley would portray a European feudal system in the same rosy light; in fact, his view on Japan reminds me of the dominant late 19th century American portrayal (Ulrich Phillips and others) of the slave condition as one of a "benevolent paternalism", where the master taught and cared for his charges.

2) Bradley's core argument is essentially that "Teddy Roosevelt's actions caused the Second World War in the Pacific and led to the death of 100,000 American servicemen". My great-uncle died on the Philippines, so I suppose I should be outraged by this thesis... but it is completely unpersuasive.

I find it odd that of all the actors in the last century, Teddy seemingly was the only one who possessed free will. In Bradley's vision of the world, history unfolds in a robotic, predetermined fashion except for Roosevelt, who alone possessed the ability to change history (much like a time traveler in any number of insipid science fiction stories).

Why not blame John Bunyan and Pilgrim's Progress for helping affect the American belief system several hundred years before Teddy, or Teddy's dad for raising him steeped in the racial politics of the day, or the Japanese leaders who expanded their empire in the First World War, or finally the cabal of leaders who actually decided to attack Pearl Harbor in 1941? They had no less free will than Teddy, and it is a ridiculous argument to reach back to 1905 and pin the blame on one flawed U.S. president.

These two flaws cast a black pall over Bradley's work, and I fear they mortally wounded his argument. There certainly is plenty of room for criticism of U.S. policies at the turn of the century, but I would hope that other books on the subject be better researched and less of a polemic.
