A very valuable book for all modern men (and women)

I really enjoyed this book and will certainly re-read it.

All men have to navigate the sexual marketplace and relationships with women throughout their lives, and most men instinctively want a more sophisticated understanding of how that market really works. At least I always have. Unfortunately the modern media is so terrified of offending women and losing the marketing cashflow associated with them, it's become aggressively anti-male to the detriment of the average guy. Most men spend their entire lives perceiving the gender power dynamics around them almost as white noise, with no real ability to tune into what's actually happening in their interactions. Many men perceive their own gender and even themselves to be unworthy of the respect, dignity and options our society is so desperate to guarantee for the average woman, without really understanding why they feel this way.

The Rational Male is an easy to digest set of essays that essentially tune men into the real dynamics of the sexual marketplace, and the cultural/political forces surrounding it. It's easy to see when reading it that the author's primary intent is to educate the average guy about his potential, options, leverage and best strategies when interacting with women. It's particularly valuable because it does an excellent job of explaining women's sexual and relationship strategies, and some of the most common social conventions used to leverage guys into acting against their own best interest in their relationships without them even realizing it.

If you read and appreciated books like Men on Strike by Dr Helen Smith or The Myth of Male Power by Warren Farrell, you will probably enjoy this book as well, because although they cover different subjects they frequently touch on similar themes.

Some of the most interesting writing for me was on the topics of female hypergamy, the nature of Alpha and Beta men, the typical guys belief in relational equity, women hitting the wall, and the changing power dynamics between men and women as they age. It's all easy to understand and digest, whilst still prompting the reader to think in a variety of directions about the connections and consequences of the ideas put forth. In short, it's stimulating and energetic writing and I've never come across anything quite like it before.

It takes great courage to write a book like this in today's PC culture, but it felt to me as though the author really had the best interests of the average guy in mind when he wrote it. I also felt he was very honest in his communication. I really appreciated that, and I'm recommending this book to all my guy friends. Keep up the great work Rollo, looking forward to the next one.

Why do my eyes hurt? Because you've never used them before.

About 4 years ago I watched a TV ad. Ad was about a fat boy (male in his 30) crying in his bed calling for his mother, because he was sick. At the same time his wife was standing beside, looking pity and giving him an advertised pill. I sat there with only one thought: " what the hell." That night I watched only ads. I was shocked with what I found. Almost every ad had the same concept of crying, weak or somehow passive man and woman in dominant role. I couldn’t fully comprehend the stuff I was seeing at that time. And so it began.
I wanted to understand. I wanted to know why. I wanted to know if I'm the only one or am I just going crazy. I've been in serious relationships, in playful, I had ONS, but when I tried to understand and rationalize my behavior and behavior of other people around me, I failed to make the correct order out of it.

This book in particular, was one of the first semi-serious evaluations I read about this topic. It helped me to structure my thoughts and understand my own actions, as well as people around me. For me it was like reading in the native language I knew when I was a kid, but then lost overtime, and when I started reading again, the language came back to me, and I could fully understand and enjoy the full power and passion of it, even more comparing to when I was a kid.

However, there is a downside. The downside comes not from the book itself, but rather from us and our own ego. Unintentionally we were set up that way that when you read the book, and you have your own “aha” moment, people tend to go from one extreme to another. They feel burned, they feel like they were lied to their whole life, and so their first reaction is anger, its irritation, its generalization of facts and actions of other people. Yes, it is necessary period of any workout, including mental, and its called pain period. At that point your best bet would be to lean back, observe, learn, and look around, and then, when you are calm, your anger is gone, and you are ready to act, do it as an adult. Do it as someone who has learned a new knowledge, someone who is in position of power, and got an absolutely unique ability to look from other perspective of view. Because now you do.

This is not a good or a bad book. This book is rationalization of male thoughts. You will understand what was happening in your high school, you will see now how come your wife left you after so many years of amazing marriage, you will see how your girlfriend could cheat with that tattoed punk, you will understand why your mother was sometimes acting not like your mother, you will see why your co-workers/classmates/ friends and family behave that way with the opposite sex, and you will laugh, cry, giggle, and will have this small smirk on your face., as you know this whole joke and you are the only one who can understand it. Embrace, prepare, and be ready to act.

That line of dialogue taken from one of the greatest movies ever is a perfect description of the journey this book takes you on. I knew nothing of Red Pill Philosophy, Pick-Up Artistry or the Manosphere before reading this book. A philosophy that was man-centric, even in theory, probably would have made me recoil in disgust 2 years ago. So it was my ignorance to what I was getting into that left my brain truly open to the things talked about and explored in this book. It was that ignorance that made me continue reading it. Ignorance is, after all, the beginning of wisdom.

Why I chose that specific line from the Matrix as the headline of my review is simple: I got more out of experiencing and seeing with my own eyes and ears EXACTLY what was said in the book than I ever did while reading it. I was told what the Matrix was, in a sense.. but never truly understood it until I finished the book and continued my life and saw first hand the constant beta-male mindset that has taken over as "the norm". Watch any commercial or sitcom where there is a husband and wife dynamic being portrayed for all the proof you need that being beta is more or less expected of every man. It's a great line from a great movie, but it fits so well with my experience of reading this book and having my eyes opened truly for the first time. I call it my pre-RM life and post-RM life. Pre-RM life was a complete waste of time. Now, for the first time, I feel like I have a grasp on what is really going on beneath the surface between men and women. A grasp I never would have been open to or realized without reading this book.

You may be wondering "If no one can be told what the matrix is, why bother reading this book?" It's simple. Morpheus spent 10 minutes talking to Neo and there was nothing he could say or do to truly get him to understand his situation. I see a strong parallel to that scene in The Matrix in talking about these issues to other men in my life or on the internet. I could talk their ears off all night but there's nothing I could say to them that would even come close the impact of them seeing it first hand, on their own. This book is your red pill, but it will only take you as far as putting it in your mouth and swallowing. The real growth as a person will come after you're done reading it. That's when your eyes will open and you'll realize you've spent your entire life with a hose down your throat and a needle screwed into the back of your skull. It's a two-step process. Read it(swallow the red pill). Live it(wake up and have your eyes opened). Both are equally important and the main reason why I chose that Matrix quote. But I digress.

The staggering one-sidedness of books, articles, magazines and talk shows dedicated to helping women is frankly appalling. There simply are no books like this one out today that offer help to men. I am speaking about meaningful help, this isn't a "pat on the back" book. This isn't a "just buy her flowers" book. This isn't a "you're the man, apologize and fix it" book. This is a revealing look into the motivations of every female when it comes to relationships. This is a laundry list of everything men do wrong in relationships starting from the very first interaction. A laundry list that the feminized western society is perfectly content with allowing you to believe is true for their own benefit. The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist. Beta mindset exists because it is in the best interest of females all over the world to make sure as many men as possible don't know it exists.

If you are a man who has ever been attracted to a woman, this book is providing information and knowledge you simply will not find anywhere else. The knowledge of the world and relationships this book provides is not only essential for starting and maintaining good and lasting relationships, it's essential for navigating interactions with almost anyone you encounter throughout the day. The implications of changing your mindset, while rooted in navigating relationships, is far reaching... and I would say has benefits that go beyond wanting to get laid. Your career, your confidence, your family relationships, your finances... all of these things can and will be improved by reading this book.

So I implore you, reader of this review: If you've ever thought to yourself "Why don't more girls like me?" you must buy this book right now. Seriously, stop reading and go and buy it.

Strikingly Different Photographs

If you think of fashion photography as being the pictures of clothes draped across beautiful bodies to be shown in advertisements, you will find only a small percentage of the pictures in this book to meet that expectation. Instead here you will find photographs that are striking, that don't really fit with the idea of selling a dress. Indeed if 'fashion' implies clothes, some of the pictures here don't show any clothes at all, just the form of the model.

The result is a collection of photographs that show what the best of the best of photographers are doing today. Striking, yes. Disturbing, sometimes. Beautiful, often. Sexy, usually. Each page brings something to the eye that's usually a surprise.

About the Author
Larry Gaines is chair of his department and a longtime, well-known figure in the field, both as an educator and in law enforcement. Highly respected and well-liked in the discipline, he is also a former law enforcement officer whose experience has resulted in a book with powerful "cop appeal."

Roger LeRoy Miller has served on the faculty of several respected universities, including the University of Washington, Clemson University, and the University of Miami School of Law. As a professor, he has taught intellectual property law and entertainment law, among other subjects. A widely published and respected author, his work has appeared in the Insurance Counsel Journal, Defense Research, California Trial Lawyers Journal, Antitrust Bulletin, Wisconsin Law Review, and Connecticut Law Review. He has authored or co-authored numerous authoritative textbooks on law, including BUSINESS LAW: TEXT & CASES; BUSINESS LAW TODAY: TEXT & SUMMARIZED CASES; and THE LEGAL ENVIRONMENT TODAY. Professor Miller completed his studies at the University of California at Berkeley and University of Chicago.

"Undoing the Silence offers six tools to help us write. They are: The Freewriting Tool, The Process Tool, The Thinking Tool, The Audience Tool, The Feed-Back Tool and The Word-Power Tool. As I read through the explanation of each tool and tried the exercises, I noticed that, by trial and error, I have used some of them when I tackle a writing project. However, my employment of such techniques has been pretty haphazard. This toolbox is a wonderful resource because it includes strategies to help us overcome the obstacles that stand in the way of effective writing. Dunlap encourages us to step back from the pressure to make our writing perfect on the first attempt and to let a piece sit while we do something else to recharge our minds. I have found that the freewriting tool is quite liberating and has already enriched my writing. Another very important perspective I have gained is an understanding of my tendency to write in the passive voice. One of the exercises helped me to convert my passive verbs into active ones. A statement such as "it is believed" becomes "I believe". It may be scary to put my own opinions and thoughts into words, but they immediately become more powerful when I do.

There are many more wonderful suggestions and tips for strengthening writing in this book. I believe every writer can benefit from reading it and trying them out. With the help of Louise Dunlap, may we all use our voices more effectively to change our communities for the better!"

Funny, Quirky, Sometimes Poignant - A Wonderful Novel Involving Ian, the Goldfish, and Others Who Are Not Nearly as Wise ...

Bradley Somer’s novel “Fishbowl” is quirky, funny, and touching. Ian lives alone, with the exception of Troy the snail, in his "Fishbowl" on the 27th and top floor of the Seville on Roxy. Given to Connor Radley by his most recent girlfriend Katie, Ian is named for his childhood best friend, a golden retriever. As the novel moves forward, Ian is falling through the air toward the earth.

The other individuals, who live in the high-rise, and Connor – as well as Katie who frequently spends the night - form an eclectic group of people who each face their own issues and must learn that no one can exist alone and in a vacuum. Garth, a burly construction worker, harbors a secret. Herman, an orphan living with his grandfather, blacks out under stress. Claire, an agoraphobic – or as she prefers to be called “aggressively introverted” individual – is a now unemployed phone sex worker. Petunia Delilah, a hair stylist who lives with her boyfriend Danny, is pregnant and must avoid strenuous activity. Jimenez, who maintains the Seville on Roxy, lives on its third floor.

Fifty-five short chapters make up the text of “Fishbowl”; chapter titles have a melodramatic tone and seem as if they were from the silent film era. The introductory chapter feels as if it could be one of two things – the “majestic” introductory text of a film that is being narrated by James Earl Jones, or a novel that is actually “…a dissertation in progress…” Subsequent chapters are arranged in groups of seven, Ian’s chapters begin each grouping. In these chapters, observations of and comments about life and living from Ian's perspective take center stage. Ian’s chapters form the thread that helps bind the lives of the other characters into a cohesive story. Further, the narratives in Ian's chapters are the most poignant as the discourse highlights the isolation of his fishbowl and the loneliness of his almost solitary life. Readers will quickly recognize Ian’s narrative applies to the isolated apartment living of the primarily solitary characters.

Chapters focusing on or involving each of the primary human characters follow those focusing on Ian. As Ian descends toward earth, each of the chapters reveals details of and secrets about the individual who is the focus of the chapter. The failure of the building's elevators to operate, results in the characters having to use the stairs or to rely on other tenants instead of existing cocooned in their own apartments. This makes the real point of “Fishbowl” clear.

Bradley Somer is an extraordinary author. Not only is he able to write a unique, engaging story, he does so using a broad vocabulary and complex, well-crafted sentences. Because it uses an unusually rich vocabulary, you may need to have a dictionary nearby in order to appreciate every nuance and every idea presented. Readers will enjoy his refreshing style that is so different from much of contemporary literature. Readers should be aware that “Fishbowl” does contain sexual situations and references, as well as some profanity.

I loved “Fishbowl” and readers who enjoy a novel that is not simply a cookie-cutter work of fiction will definitely want to include “Fishbowl” when choosing what to read next.

Ian, the goldfish, takes the ultimate leap of faith. Poor Ian.

Fishbowl has been my favorite book so far this year. It’s a simple story: There is a big apartment house and a fish named Ian falls from his bowl on the 27th floor. Now, you take that premise and put it in the hands of an author as capable as Bradley Somer and you have yourself a rollicking, funny, sexy, tragic slice of life seen as Ian takes his nose-dive.

The book can almost be told with the longish epigrams that start each chapter i.e.: Chapter 4 “In Which We Meet the Villain Connor and the Evil Seductress Faye”. Or Chapter 26 “In Which Homeschooled Herman Witnesses His First Life-Altering Moment”. There is a lot of the unique humorous style of Douglas Adams (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) or Graeme Simsion (The Rosie Project) going on in this book.

The residents of The Seville on Roxy are laid out cafeteria style for the reader’s enjoyment – a little bit of this and a little bit of that. Ian, the goldfish was a gift to Connor by his girlfriend Katie. Unfortunately there is a third point on this love triangle, namely the evil Faye. Among other residents in the building there is the super Jimenez who feels invisible and under-appreciated ; Petunia Delilah who is pregnant with sudden tingles in her nether regions; There is a shut-in who has a penchant for naughty words; and Herman, who is quite sure he can travel through time. In all, The Seville on Roxy is a microcosm of life in the Big City. Ian, the goldfish, may be the only one in the building that is willing to take a risk.

One last comment: Great story, great concept, great writing BUT my favorite part of the book is that on the far right hand margin each page has a tiny ink goldfish that if the pages are flipped will plunge down the column like Ian plummeting from the 27th floor. When is the last time you’ve found a “Flip-book”? There is so much I’d love to relate about this book but I can only urge you to read it and hopefully enjoy it as much as I.

Life inside a box (and outside a fishbowl)

Fishbowl is "a glimpse into the box" that is called the Seville on Roxy. The box contains "the perpetual presence of life itself."

We are told in chapter 2 that Ian the goldfish will plunge from a 27th floor balcony in chapter 54. We are also told that Troy the snail, who stays safely in the bowl, lives the kind of uneventful life that usually assures dull longevity, while Ian is an adventurer who has always yearned to go beyond the limits of his fishbowl. Is it better to die as "an old fish without one adventure had"? Of course not. Ian is no snail.

The story's main characters are people, which is fortunate since Ian, while a pleasant goldfish, doesn't have much personality. Katie is Connor Radley's girlfriend. Katie falls in love quickly and often, usually with the wrong men. Connor clearly falls into the "bad boyfriend" category, as most of his multiple sex partners understand, but maybe he has unmined depths. Or maybe not.

Conner lives in the Seville, as do the other main characters: Jiminez the super, Petunia Delilah the pregnant woman who is about to give birth, Garth the construction worker who can't wait to transform himself with the contents of a mysterious package, Claire the "aggressively introverted" (not to say agoraphobic) shut-in who gets paid for phone sex, and Homeschooled Herman who suffers from blackouts that he regards as proof of teleportation and time travel.

The main characters are tied together not just by their residence in Seville but by the failure of both elevators to function properly for the half hour during which the story takes place. In a series of short chapters, the narrative jumps from character to character (including, occasionally, Ian). As Ian falls, we are treated to brief descriptions of the lives of apartment dwellers (main characters and others) as he plunges past their windows.

The Seville is a building full of lonely people who, in different ways, don't quite know how to connect with the world. Some of them become a little less lonely by the novel's end. Others become a little lonelier but they learn about themselves in the process. Some learn that overcoming loneliness requires "an uncomfortable exposure to let oneself be true in the presence of another."

The characters are all struggling to give definition to their lives. They want to be happy. They aren't certain how to accomplish that end but they know that things need to change. To a large extent, Fishbowl is about finding the courage to change a life, to find yourself while finding the freedom to be yourself.

The story is very funny but it is also sweet and occasionally touching in ways that are both genuine and original. It is also a smart and insightful look at how people can have multiple identities at the same time, each of them real, all of them assembling into a complicated and contradictory whole. Fishbowl is a wonderful novel of birth and death and everything in between, all revealed in a thirty minute glimpse into a box that "fills up with infinitely thin layers of experience," layers so thin that there will always be room for the box to hold an infinity of new and eventful experiences as its residents live their separate lives together.
