Sold book, but nothing new

In their book Effective Time Management - Using Microsoft Outlook to Organize Your Work and Personal Life, the authors Lothar Seiwert and Holger Woeltje provide a practical guide to using Outlook (as well as OneNote) to create a time-management system. Simply said, they teach you how to become more structured and organised when using Outlook to manage email, tasks, and appointments.

What I really like about this book is that it covers Office 2003, Office 2007, and Office 2010! While Office 2010 is already around for some time, a lot of companies and people still use Office 2007 and even Office 2003. So, even if you have one of the older versions, don't worry, this book gives you detailed instructions on how to do things, such as setting up views in all 3 versions of Outlook.

As for the content, I have to say that I didn't benefit much from it, as I already used most of the advise contained in this book. However, if so far you're using only 'standard' Outlook, meaning you don't let Outlook filter emails for you, you don't create different views for your tasks to get a better overview of what is the most important thing to do, or you don't categorise your appointments to get a better overview of your week, this may be just the right book for you. You will get to learn how to approach each of the facets of Outlook (email, tasks, appointments) and get the most out of them to become more productive, both with techniques ("choose the most important thing that you would do if you could choose only one from your tasks, assign it #1. Then, continue with the others") and 'implementation info' (for example how to customise views so that you get a better overview of your tasks).

Overall, it's a very solid book with useful advise, but nothing really new for people who already looked at time-management methods and use them.

Change Everything You Do

Despite the book on time management with Outlook� being under 300 pages, reviewing took quite awhile. I mention that because that is likely what many readers will find. I kept returning to implement.

Effective Time Management: Using Microsoft� Outlook� to Organize Your Work and Personal Life is just what it says. However, it could use an additional subtitle about changing everything about how you handle your desk and computer.

To receive the book's substantial value, you cannot just take a tip here and another there. You have to change the way you receive, read and send email, how you plan, attend or conduct meetings, and master the to-do and journal functions many Outlook owners do not know of or use. Time-management guru Lothar Seiwert and productivity expert Holger Woeltje show specifically how to do all of that. They lay out the problems, describe the concepts for those and their solutions, provide real-world examples of best practices, and give step-by-step description of how to do it yourself.

People who feel harried and overwhelmed by information and tasks coming at all times from all directions can get tremendous help here. All it takes is looking at each aspect of the business day in a new framework and then implementing better systems to deal with them. It is not at all simple, but the authors put it all right there in front of you.

By the bye, as a technical writer, I also appreciated their index. That often contracted-out weakest aspect of technical books is actually useful in this one. For example, it uses concepts instead of just the precise words Microsoft and the authors use.

The authors do not stint on any area. They separate these into email, tasks, weekly planning, daily planning, meetings and goals. Each gets the full problems, solutions, examples, and procedures treatment. If you thought you understood what you face everyday, know that they have made a deeper analysis.

You may find yourself skimming the examples, with their generalized, bullet-point concepts. That will be OK, because they lead you into the procedures, which is the essence of each area. If you think you do not have time to upgrade the way you work, you are likely to conclude you must take that time, so you will end up in much greater control of your job.

One of the best aspects along the way is that the pair introduces and explains how to use Outlook features invisible to and unused by many owner. Think block building and journal use, and how to get the most out of OneNote.

As an aside, it is possible to use other productivity tools than Outlook. The authors do not generalize to those. They do show why they have found what they need in Outlook.

Well worth it

This book deals with the reality of application. I love the specific examples and the You-Try-It section. (In my experience as an Outlook/OneNote educator, the biggest issue isnt the software, it's helping users implement it.) This book also has a tidy, well organized presentation style. It's friendly, comprehensive, appealing and respectful. I would love to see the authors tackle a book about online collaboration using OneNote Outlook and Sharepoint/Wordpress. I'm adding MindJet to that mix as well. How about it guys?

Captain Kathleen McKnight and her team are in the Amazon trying to take down a dangerous drug lord, but the mission goes horribly wrong. She's kidnapped, her team is ambushed and slaughtered, and she would have been next, if it hadn't been for the appearance of a jaguar followed by the mysterious Connor Anderson. He's instantly attracted to the brave female warrior before him, but he can't risk his secret being uncovered, and he decides to let her go.

Kathleen can't forget the trauma from the failed mission. Suffering from PTSD and the subsequent dissolution of her engagement to her fiance, she follows her psychiatrist's recommendation to go back to the jungle to face her fears. She's determined to find Connor, the man who keeps a pet jaguar, to thank him in person. Upon her arrival, her guide fails to show up,and so she decides to make the trek alone. Surely a pet jaguar won't harm her, right? It doesn't take long before Connor crosses paths with her, and he decides to take her back to the home he shares with his sister, Maya. It's not long before the drug lord hears about her reappearance on his turf, and he wants her. Can Connor keep her safe from her enemies, keep his secret and possibly get his mate as well?

Maya recognizes the sizzling chemistry between her brother and Kat. She desperately wants Connor to be happy and be with his mate. Connor won't hear of it and remains stubborn about getting closer to Kat. What's a sister to do but take matters into her own hands, or paws?

From the blurb, I expected a suspenseful romance with a hot male shifter determined to win over the warrior-like heroine. For me, this story fell a little short. In the beginning, I wasn't sure if Maya had all her marbles. Her determination to push Connor and Kat together, by any means necessary, was a little on the creepy side. Not to mention she didn't spend any time thinking about possible consequences good or bad. Kat took certain events surprisingly calm. Too calm for my liking. She never took Maya to task for her actions. That put me off a little. Then there was a lot of repetitiveness about Connor and Maya's history, as well as Maya's reasoning for what she did to Kat. Constantly on the run, trying to make it to civilization, then going over the worst case scenarios of Kat on a plane full of humans took some steam out of the story and out of the sex scenes that just felt rushed.

What I did like was Kat's struggle to control herself. It was actually quite humorous that she'd suffer from sleepwalking, and she had lousy timing. Despite not having mastered her ability on command, she easily fell back on her combat training to help protect Connor and Maya. For that she earned brownie points from me. If you enjoy an exotic location, a hot hero with a penchant for purring, and quite a bit of action then this book is for you, but it wasn't quite for me.

I liked it but not one I'll reread

Through a horrific event, medical discharge from the army and a failed engagement, Kathleen McKnight hasn't stopped thinking about Connor Anderson and the jaguar she believes is like his pet. A year after a failed mission in the Amazon, Kat makes her way back into the jungle to thank the man that saved her life on that fateful day.

Connor hasn't been able to get Kat off his mind and when he and his sister Maya make their annual trip to South America to shift and roam freely as jaguars, he's surprised to find her there. Though he's happy to see Kat again, he's determined to get her to safety and out of his life because he can't see a human/shifter relationship working. Luckily for him, Maya sees the desire and need in his eyes every time he looks at Kat and has plans of her own.

What Kat went through during her failed mission to take down a drug lord was terrible and I recognize that it takes a lot of strength and courage for her to work past that, not to mention the trip into the Amazon itself, but I wasn't blow away by her. It's not that I didn't like her, it's just there wasn't a lot that will make me put her on my favorite heroines list. The same goes for Connor. He's not the type of alpha that borders on being a a-hole but I can see that he's one with how easily he takes charge. He's handsome and strong but again, not a whole lot that will stick with me. Both kept me interested in the story and I wanted them to have their HEA but now that the books over, I probably won't give them any more thought.

Kat's reemergence in the Amazon hasn't gone unnoticed by the drug lord she escaped from and he wants revenge. Connor, Maya and Kat are in a race to get back to the U.S. before the drug lord's henchmen get their hands on Kat, a task that's made more challenging by something Maya does to Kat. All this added intensity to the story and brought Kat and Connor closer together. I liked these scenes because they showed what the jaguars were cable of and introduced a character that I'm guessing will come to mean something to Maya.

Savage Hunger checked off all the boxes that were necessary for a good paranormal romance. A hero and heroine who are right for each other but need a little help, sassy side character, a bit of action, hot sex and of course, romance. Kat and Connor didn't blow me out of the water but at no time did I think I would put the book down and not finish. It's not going on my keep shelf but I do plan on continuing the series so I can read Maya's story.

Okay Jaguar Shifter Story

Captain Kathleen McKnight is kidnapped and held hostage in a South American jungle, while trying to capture a drug lord. Connor Anderson, on his yearly vacation with his sister, hears her cries of pain and rushes off to rescue her. Shifting into his jaguar form, he fends off the kidnappers, only to leave her as her Army team shows up.

A year later, Kathleen, now discharged from the army, returns to the jungle to find the man she can't forget and his "pet" jaguar. Connor hasn't forgotten Kathleen either, but knows the unlikelihood two of them being together. However, when Connor and his sister find Kathleen lost in the jungle, he can't resist the temptation to spend more time with her.

The book to this point was fun and romantic. I especially enjoyed the suspense scenes, which is not the usual for me at all. Normally, suspense scenes are either too graphic for me or not suspenseful at all, if that makes sense. Sometimes it is not enough to hold my breath, sit on the edge of my seat and read on to see what happens; more like, I get more suspense driving down the road at rush hour. Here was just enough suspense to keep me turning the pages but not too much to take away from the romance.

It is after Connor and his sister bring Kathleen to their home that the book started to fall flat for me. Maya, Connor's sister, scratches Kathleen and injects her with shapeshifter DNA, transforming her. And when Kathleen finds out, she just accepts it and her new shifter status, and joins in with Connor and Maya.

She just accepts it?! This is hard to believe for me. Her whole life has just been changed forever, and she is okay with that? She doesn't resent Connor or Maya? She doesn't complain?

No way. Not happening.

After this, the book loses its charm for me and goes from wonderful to just okay. I have a difficult time believing that a strong, independent woman in charge of her life just meekly accepts the change someone else made for their life.

This book wasn't bad; it had wonderful moments of humor and plenty of smokin' hot scenes. My feelings toward it were just not there after that beginning. For me, it didn't quite measure up to the promise implied in the beginning of the story.

Nowadays there are two principal philosophical traditions followed by Tibetan Lamas. The second is found among the two Older Schools, the Nyingmapa and the Bonpo, which emphasize the Dzogchen point of view in elucidating their understanding of the Higher Tantras. Among the Older Schools, Dzogchen, "the Great Perfection", which lies beyond the process of Tantric transformation, is regarded as the quintessential teaching of the Buddha, pointing directly to the Nature of Mind and its intrinsic awareness, known as Rigpa. However, according to Lopon Tenzin Namdak Yongdzin Rinpoche, the leading Dzogchen master among the Bonpo Lamas living today, "It is necessary for us as practitioners to know what Dzogchen is, how to practice it, and the result of this practice." Lopon Rinpoche undertakes this task in a series of nine teachings he gave some years ago to Western students interested in the view of Dzogchen and its practice in meditation. Here the Lopon compares the Dzogchen view with the views of Madhyamaka, Chittamatra, Tantra and Mahamudra, clearly indicating the similarities and the differences among them. Unlike the traditional educational system found in other Tibetan monasteries, at Tashi Menri Monastery and at Triten Norbutse Monastery, both now re-established in India and Nepal respectively, Dzogchen is not restricted to private meditation instruction only. Rather, it is brought out into the daylight of the marketplace of philosophical ideas and discussed in relation to the viewpoints of Sutra and Tantra. The Lopon's exceptionally clear exposition of these various views, which have consequences for one's meditation practice, will be of interest to Western students and practitioners.

More Advanced Dzogchen than most--close to 5 stars

This is an edited/reordered series of 9 talks given @ 1991 retreats in Austria/England/Holland/US (new version of privately published 1992 edition) + Reynolds' introduction, appendix/author's bio, endnotes, & bibliography. His ordering is moot, but IMHO, it's one of most advanced contemporary Dzogchen works (vs. translations e.g. Longchenpa) in English--providing more information on practices e.g. Togal visions. It is very straightforward/honest, directly contrasting (1) Madhyamaka, Mahamudra (but NOT Gampopa's), & Dzogchen; (2) shamatha, vipashyana, samadhi, & Rigpa/trekcho; and (3) Buddhist vs. Bon Dzogchen. I especially appreciated the authors explication of p. 34 the relationship between energy & meditation (esp. obstacles) reminiscent of Western psychology's Activation Theory as well as p. 97 his comparison of the discursive mind as a computer. Furthermore, he utilizes an active/passive (direct/indirect) dichotomy (~English transitive vs. intransitive verbs) to analyze emptiness, thoughts, & study vs. practice--for which his approach is eminently practical. p. 24, says "Western students are especially suited to the practice of Dzogchen." Major points include explanation of Dzogchen views of p. 33 cause & effect & taking the fruit as the cause--reminiscent of Jung's synchronicity The Tao of Psychology: Synchronicity and Self & Kant's ideal (or final) cause The Ways of Knowing or the Methods of Philosophy --& the relationships among energy, reality, projection (~Western psychology), mind, & emptiness.

Overall, this is an excellent work though much of it (e.g. the extensive biography & description of Bon Dzogchen training) may have limited interest. Per the author, there appears little difference between Bon & Nyingmapa (Buddhist) Dzogchen. Unfortunately, however, the author fails to address Gampopa's Mahamudra--the type mostly promulgated today in English (e.g. by Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche Pointing Out the Dharmakaya & Traleg Kyabgon Mind at Ease: Self-Liberation through Mahamudra Meditation) vs. the Dalai Lama's Gelugpa version, The Gelug/Kagyu Tradition of Mahamudra.

ONLY for the advanced student.

This is a precious and very practical book but only useful if you've become familiar with the Non-Dual. (You have learned to connect with the world without words. You understood that peace of mind will make you much more intelligent and authentic than running trough the old corridors of this huge underground city that is your past and your mind.)
I have some other books of the same author waiting in the shelf until I am open enough to read them. At this stage you do not work with the merely symbolic anymore so will have to actually LIVE the proposed exercise, not just fantasize it.

P.S. I recently came accross an extensive and exellent analysis of Dzogchen (for advanced students) which is freely available on the internet. It is the doctoral disertation of DAVID HIGGINS: "The Philosophical Foundations of classical Rdzogs chen in Tibet: Investigating the Distinction between dualistic Mind (sems) and primordial knowing (ye shes)". For those fortunate intellectuals out there who are on the way to discover their own "madness" I could not recomend it more.

About the Author

Disturbing History of the Silos

I liked Shift even more than Wool because it filled in the history of the silos, told about their functioning on a day-to-day basis, and gave us the ultimate goal of the creators. Let's just say there are evil people who do evil things, but think they are doing what is right for the world. That is usually defined as insanity.

This book "shifts" between three plotlines: 1. The operation of the control silo; 2. The past history of why the silos were created; 3. The story of Solo in Silo 18 who we met in Wool.

The people who run the control silo are kept in cryogenic stasis and awakened occasionally to complete a six-month "shift" in their specialty field (engineer, cook, administration, etc.). So while the people in all the other silos are living their lives, producing a new generation, and dying, the people in Silo 1 are the same people who designed the Silo program. Of course, that creates a natural conflict as the people in the other silos evolve and change, while those in Silo 1 are still the same as when they went in. As we saw in Wool, Juliette, or anyone who asks too many questions or searches for answers causes problems in the tightly regimented world of the silos.

We learn why the silos were built, and it was by a group of sick, evil men who thought they knew what was best for the world. We also find out their plans for opening the silos after a certain amount of time has passed and this discovery is very disturbing.

There are also good people trying to do the right things and trying to find out the secrets behind the silos. Some of these people do so in secret, while others do so overtly and run into some problems.

This entire story was very disturbing because I fear it mirrors our world today, where a bunch of billionaires run the country while the rest of us go about our lives not having a clue about the machinations going on around us. These people can basically do anything they want--like the ones in the book--and there is no way we would ever know.

The book is very good even though it is dark and disturbing. The way the plot lines are intermingled is imaginative and revealing and the characters are all developed as complex individuals with reasons of their own for being where they are. I look forward to, "Sand", although the name kind of worries me about the ultimate resolution of the series. I'd feel better if it was called, "Out", or something similar, but, either way, I am now moving on to the third and final book in the series. The two books so far are both highly recommended.

I was really in love with the start of this book

I was really in love with the start of this book. One thing I really enjoy about this series is the world in which it takes place and all it's mysteries. The great thing about this book is that it teaches you a lot about the world. You learn a lot and I loved that. It was cool to learn how everything came to be. However all of this was overshadowed by the characters.

They were all so boring! Donald especially got on my nerves with how unremarkable he was. I just didn't buy anything about his character. People seemed to think he was great but I just saw bland. And while he claimed to love his wife I didn't buy it. He's like a piece of white bread: boring and bland.

The second half of the book focused less on mysteries and more on the stories of Solo and Donald. I liked Solo's bits well enough although sometimes they dragged. But I dreaded most of Donald's chapters. They just got so tedious. I hope the third book proves to be more like the first.

After reading "Wool" as part of my Kindle free lending library, i became hooked on the Silo trilogy and so bought the next two books in the series.
In "Shift," we learn much more detail as to how the silos came to be. The author used nice imagery in describing the "fifty circles spaced out like the stars on an old flag he had once served" and local color when addressing "Savannah's no-see-ums on summer days." The author made a good point when he quite rightly pointed, "Here was a city charged with governing all the others, and it couldn't even take care of itself."
I feel that the author stumbled when he stated that the national political convention was being held in October.
Why the nuclear attack occurred was never adequately explained. I also question how the various technical jobs in the silos were correctly filled at the beginning from a seemingly random group of people.
Also, the need to demolish "sick" silos was also never explained to my satisfaction
The "blue skies and green grass" near the end was surprise and attention getter.
I look forward to reading "Dust."

Lovely artbook

[[VIDEOID:54858cdeae226f13169d00093baebe18]] I actually enjoyed this 7-min short film more than The Good Dinosaur that followed.

There are several things about Sanjay's Super Team that I really like. First is how different the idea and concept is compared to all other different Pixar films. It's actually something about culture and religion. The second is the action scenes that are really dynamic, impactful, almost anime-like. And third is the beautiful lighting and set design. All these are discussed in the book.

This 130-page hardcover is a wonderful companion to the short film. It collects plenty of concept art with commentary by director Sanjay Patel and other artists who worked on the film.

There's a touching introduction about how Sanjay's father and the Indian culture inspired the story. Throughout the book, there's interesting details on how the characters came about and how storytelling was to be approached.

The artworks are also fantastic. There are storyboards, designs for the characters and the temple set. All are drawn in a very stylised manner that's can be considered similar to picture books that Sanjay Patel has worked on.

There's so much depth and information compared to the recent Pixar artbooks that are almost wordless, e.g. The Art of Good Dinosaur and The Art of Inside Out. I'm relieved that my money is well spent this time. It's a very nice book.

Super team....Super Book!!!!!

I finally picked this book up after seeing the mindblowing animated short. I've been a fan of Sanjay's work for a long time and this book does not disappoint. The artwork is beautiful and really does justice to the visual development process of any animated film or short. The story of the short centers on bridging the cultural gap between a father and son. The father wants his son to embrace more cultural stories from their native ancestry but little Sanjay only has eyes for western American superhero characters until he enters a world where the two can unite to help him defeat a powerful enemy. As with alot of Pixar shorts, this story is told with no dialogue, just the animation and character pantomime. The book is filled with great sketches as well as finish still shots to entice and inspire any reader or artist. Great styles and character designs, great color. A must have art book. I can't wait to see what he does next.

About the Author
Swami Kriyananda is a direct disciple of Paramhansa Yogananda, trained by the great Indian master to spread the life-transforming teachings of Kriya Yoga around the globe. He is widely considered one of the world’s foremost experts on meditation, yoga, and spiritual practice, having authored over 140 books on these subjects. An all-time classic!

I have the old orange version of this book, and have read it so many times the cover is falling apart. I wanted to share it with friends but grew too attached to my copy to lend it out, so glad to see it is still available. I hope they keep printing this book forever. Truly the best explanation of astrology and the best definition of the signs I have ever read. You must get this if you're interested in astrology.
