Bien Cuit: The Art of Bread, by Zachary Golper

One of the world's most celebrated bakers in America shares his insider’s secrets to making his delicious, artisanal bread that will have home bakers creating professional-quality products in no time—and inexpensively.

Bien Cuitintroduces a new approach to a proudly old-fashioned way of baking bread. In the oven of his Brooklyn bakery, Chef Zachary Golper creates loaves that are served in New York’s top restaurants and sought by bread enthusiasts around the country. His secret: long, low-temperature fermentation, which allows the dough to develop deep, complex flavors. A thick mahogany-colored crust is his trademark—what the French callbien cuit, or “well baked.”This signature style is the product of Golper’s years as a journeyman baker, from his introduction to baking on an Oregon farm—where they made bread by candlelight at 1 a.m.—through top kitchens in America and Europe and, finally, into his own bakery in the heart of our country’s modern artisanal food scene.

Bien Cuittells the story of Golper’s ongoing quest to coax maximum flavor out of one of the world’s oldest and simplest recipes. Readers and amateur bakers will reap the rewards of his curiosity and perfectionism in the form of fifty bread recipes that span the baking spectrum from rolls and quick breads to his famous 24-day sourdough starter. This book is an homage to tradition, but also to invention. Golper developed many new recipes for this book, including several “bread quests,” in which he brilliantly revives some of New York City’s most iconic breads (including Jewish rye, Sicilian lard bread, Kaiser rolls, and, of course, bagels). You will also find palate-pleasing and innovative “gastronomic breads” that showcase his chef’s intuition and mastery of ingredients.

Golper’s defining technique comes at a time when American home cooks are returning to tradition-tested cooking methods and championing the DIY movement. Golper’s methods are relatively simple and easy to master, with recipes that require no modern equipment to make at home: just a bowl, an oven, and time—the dough does most of the work.

Nice addition to my bread baking skills
By DelJes
I received this book in the mail without knowing about the exposed spine or the black pages. I took it as kind of an artistic expression what Zachary Golper is trying to do with the bread: expose the process, and bake it dark. So it's Artie's is not a big problem for me although I think it's kind of hipsterish. i think the black polished/painted edges are cool actually, but I'm against the black recipe pages because I can't easily take notes. My cookbooks are written on all over as I try things and maybe I'll have to buy a white pen to do that here. I have made three pretty complex breads so far, probably the three most complex ones in the book: 30 hour sourdough, 60 hour sourdough and Multi grain. I think the breads have been outstanding in flavor and texture. I'm an experienced baker so it's hard for me to know how a beginner might feel about the way the recipes are written, but I found them thorough and precise. I will eventually wander into the quick bread chapter and make some of the interesting scones and biscuits, but right now I'm super happy with the results.

so far, so good!
By BeMandy
I just received my book. It was packaged appropriately (just like every book I've ordered from Amazon). Yes, the spine is exposed. I want to bake from this book, I don't care what it looks like on my shelf. Most of the books I bake from have broken spines and are covered in flour. I'm not careless, but I buy books to use them. The recipes look interesting and the images are beautiful.

I am in no way connected to the author or publisher. I buy lots of books on Amazon and rely on reviews. I understand people questioning the spine but to me it's not a problem.

I will update after I bake!

I really like this book
By Amazon Customer
I really like this book. It surprised me. Aside from being an excellent book about baking, it is a good read---entertaining stories about the chef's career and development as a baker, and the authors' quest for good bread and good food in NYC. I read it cover to cover, which I have never done with a cookbook. The insights and useful tips clearly come from someone who has acquired his skills through hands on kitchen experience working with some of the nation's best bakers and chefs. The book is also packed with astonishing photography. The publisher's choice of binding (spineless binding?) was not typical, but this isn't the first time I have seen it...same as another (Amazon offered) cookbook, Polpo, written by a Venetian restaurateur in London.

I read this book to teach a class, but now I read it for pleasure
By Afi Scruggs
I used this book several years ago, when I filled in for a professor on leave. He used this book in his interpersonal communications class and I just followed suit.

I love it. Devito writes in a conversational tone that makes the most difficult concepts readily understandable. His examples were relevant, and I was able to create real-world exercises to explore the information he presented. Devito's explanation of acculturation and culture shock provided a great context when I screened John Sayles' movie "Brother from Another Planet."

My teaching position only lasted a year. I kept the book and I read it from time to time. Now that I'm a freelancer, I use it to come up with ideas for magazine articles. I wish the latest edition wasn't so expensive; otherwise, I'd buy a newer copy.

This text was the most valuable in my entire graduate program
By Elizabeth Pandolfi
The text had self-tests within it to ready you for an analysis of yourself and your behaviors and beliefs. This text was readable, at the graduate level, which is not true for many graduate texts, which are dumbed down to an undergraduate level, for unknown reasons. I would like to know Pearson Presses # because I first bought the book from you, then was told I could by the e-text for $51.99, so I expected Pearson to give me access to the e-text, but after paying them the fee I wa not able to get onto the e-text, it said you do not have access. Then I was desperate, as this was the last class before I graduated, so I paid a second time and they did not grant me access. The only way I completed the class was to use the professor's access (uaer name and pass2word) which was rediculous. Amazon did it's job swingingly though.

Excellent resource for the study of communications
By A. McIntosh
I recently purchased this book for a class and was very impressed after only reading chapter 1. It is a very complete book and has a lot of extra information if you want to further study a topic. It has examples that are modern and from everyday life and helps students (like me) to better understand the importance of communication. I also liked the format and the inside is very colorful which does not make reading dull. I highly recommend this product.

A Snag in the Tapestry (Thalia's Musings Book 1), by Amethyst Marie

In this complete first volume of the webseries Thalia's Musings, Thalia, the Muse of Comedy, and her eight sisters have been ordered by Zeus to leave their home on Mt. Helicon and move to Mt. Parnassus under the governorship of the god Apollo. When Thalia and Apollo raise a cursed nymph from the dead, Thalia starts to wonder if the Muses have greater powers than anyone realized. The Fates, threatened by this possibility, put her to a test.

But Thalia cares less about the Fates’ games than the behind-the-scenes drama of the Olympian royal court. Why did Apollo kill the Cyclops, Zeus’ minion? Why did Zeus give Apollo such a light sentence? And with the Cyclops dead, who will resupply Zeus’ lightning bolts when they run out? Will Hera then make her move for Zeus’ throne, or will she be too busy torturing his latest paramour? And what will happen to the Muses when said paramour is one of them?

The Best in Mythological Humor!
By chrono21
Thalia's Musings is in a class all by itself. I've only been reading online for about a month now, but when I heard that an ebook version was in the works, I knew I would not be able to throw my money at it fast enough.

The story mostly concerns itself with our first-person protagonist, Thalia, the Muse of Comedy, and boy, does she live up to the name! I'm the type that will usually only get a snarky grin out of jokes in books, because I've heard it all before. Not so when Thalia takes the reins. Over the week or so it took me to read the first volume (I usually devour books in hours, but trust me, you'll want to savor this one) there were a few times when my housemates had to step in and ask why I was cackling so hard.

The story starts off episodic in format before the backbone of the main plot gradually becomes apparent. One downside to most Greek mythology based stories is that they seem a little too in love with the subject matter, and it really just becomes a bland retelling overall. Not so with A Snag in the Tapestry. Thalia provides bountiful wit and levity to the often disastrous events the Greek Gods become involved in, and often hangs clever lampshades on the place where the divine viewpoint and the mortal viewpoint become snarled. The stories themselves are often the ones we grew up with, but with clever little differences or people working in the background that completely change the context, and I often find that I prefer the resulting tale over the original myth.

The story's solid, but it's definately the characterization that shines through in this series. Traveling with Thalia, we're introduced to her delightfully dysfunctional but loving family, consisting of her eight sisters and her ever mysterious mother, the God Apollo (who she is not in a relationship with, no matter what those foolhardy playwrights may tell you) who has taken over as the Governer of the Muses following a disastrous tenure sheep-herding, the nymph Echo, who needs some divine intervention, the inseperable Goddesses Athena and Artemis (who have a much welcome and expanded role in the sequel), her ex-boyfriend Hephaeustus (though no one remembers that) and his tempestous wife Aphrodite and bratty "son" Eros. Amazingly enough, all of these characters manage to stand out from one another without breaking flow, and Apollo and Thalia have a relationship that mixes the right balance of snarky chemistry and genuine caring.

Are there flaws? The occasional typo or punctuation error is present, but they are few and far in between. The editing here is of a professional quality, and it's so clean and well-written that it's almost hard to believe this is an indie novel.

I'm not the type to hand out five star reviews like roses to a bullfighter, and I've often found myself giving four stars to works that I really liked but didn't feel they stood up to the test. But when I ask myself if Thalia's Musings deserves a five, the answer is always a resounding yes. The story is great, the solid characterization makes me want to squeal like a schoolgirl, and as the icing on the cake, it's just damn funny. I can only hope that someday, this will be the standard by which mythological reinterpretations are judged. Long live Thalia!

Fun read!
By SheSmiles13
I have been reading this book series since #1 was released online as a web series. So excited it is finally being released as an e-book! This is a well-written, highly enjoyable mythological fantasy with a modern flair. Good characterizations and humor - you can't go wrong! I just bought 2 copies to give as gifts.

Take mythology add some fiction and a ton of wit and humor and you have some very fun reading ahead
By Sarah M. Penner
If you are trying to wrap your head around Greek mythology and want something light that is both understandable as well as helps the plot lines sink in - this is it. Take mythology add some fiction and a ton of wit and humor and you have some very fun reading ahead. The author stays true to mythology, you might need to brush up on it if you haven't, or pause throughout the book and google but other than that I wish this book was around when I was in highschool. Can't wait to dig into the following books in the series.

Panigyri: A Celebration of Life in a Greek Island Village, by Alison Cadbury

On one dark blue midnight in the late summer of 1971, I climbed down the ladder of the Evangelistria, a rusty old tub of a ship, and set foot on the soil of Paros, a medium-size island in the Aegean Sea. I had been drawn to the island by pictures of many-colored fishing boats and snow-white cubical houses, and was curious about the people who created such beauty. I intended to stay three weeks. I stayed, the first time, five years. , and have visited often since then, fascinated by the island culture-at once spare and joyous, traditional but alive, pragmatic but grounded in spirituality. This book is an ode to the culture and the people of the village of Naousa, island of Paros in the Cyclades, Greece, as I knew them.

Alison Cadbury

Alison Cadbury has the sure touch of a born story-teller, which she combines with close observation of Greek village life. Most of what she writes she heard from her neighbors or saw for herself, living in Naousa, a village on the island of Paros. She is a good listener. If the tellers embroider a tale, they do so because they know she will absorb the smallest details and carry them into her own language. This is a book that will not only appeal to lovers of Greece but to those Greeks who have grown up in cities and never experienced what Seferis called the "rich order" that once characterized rural Greek life. Cadbury observes how the rituals, music, dancing and festivals create a life that is, as the villagers say, Kathimra panigri, "Everyday a celebration."

Gail Holst-Warhaft, Author, Road to Rembetika

Like sea salt scraped with a spoon from stones along the shore of the Greek Island Paros, these essays and stories bring the immediate taste of a way of life to the reader, a way of life that is at once austere and joyous, thrifty and generous. Island villagers from fisherfolk and farmers to priests, sweet bakers, and carpenters struggle to adapt millennia-old traditions as a global culture in the form of tourism deluges the peaceful village, challenging old values, changing even the landscape, the phrygana, the dry rocky land where sheep graze and bees burrow into blossoms of thyme and oregano.

Change also affects intimate relations, especially love and marriage: Ilias, the young socialist priest-to-be, determined to be "modern," is mated in the oldest tradition; a schoolteacher loses her lover to higher education; while traditionalist Thanasis falls in love with a liberated Swedish woman, with whom he forms a unique union.

The villagers are great storytellers. The mami, the midwife, tells a story of tragic love in days gone by, and white-haired Marina spins a tale of a fisherman who might have made friends with a mermaid. That fisherman, decades later, teaches a foreign painter what Greek art is really about.

Along with stories of life on the farms and the sea go traditional beliefs: why you should not hang your clothes out overnight, work on St. Michael's day, wash your hair in August, or marry in May. Women's work and pleasures inform their lives: embroidery, spinning, washing clothes, laying out and mourning the dead.

Seasonal activities are described in lyrical language: in Autumn the grape harvest and wine-making, in July the reaping and threshing of the wheat, in Spring the astounding flowering of the fields. Times and places named for them keep a myriad saints and other holy persons alive in the minds of the villagers, as their miracles are celebrated not only with liturgy but with feasting and dancing.

Alison Cabury captures Greece and offers us a taste...yum, yum, yum...
By A. M. Traisman
Alison Cadbury has written an extraordinary memoir of her time in Greece. Her sentences are as rich and deep as the sea that surrounds her. This is a gem of a book, filled with stories and descriptions that will transport the reader to this magical place. Ms. Cadbury gives us exquisite characters as rich as any you will find in the pages of fiction. She captures these people, her island friends and neighbors, maintaining heritage and culture against the tide of the encroaching modern world. Ms. Cadbury's gift is that she was able to witness such life and craft it so brilliantly on the page. Each story honors the life of the people and places she so vividly describes. Greece has never been more beautiful, never been so affordable.

Postscript: Alison passed away on Oct. 26th, 2010 after a prolonged illness. Her sharp wit and sensibility, her honesty, wisdom and friendship will be deeply missed. Her art is eternal. Panigyri was her passion project and it was honor to be an early reader of this extraordinary work. Alison, you are a writer and teacher of the first order. Thank you for all the words you shared with us.

One of a kind
By Cynthia Cotts
Panigyri is beautifully written and it moved me in so many ways. I am an American woman who only got to Paros for the first time in 2002 at the age of 44. Despite how much it has changed, I also fell in love with Naousa and have been back twice and will return this June. The book is especially electrifying for me, because it took me back to the pure island culture that doesn't exist anymore and allowed me to live it vicariously.

The only thing missing from the book is a full appreciation of the author, a native English speaker who has produced a contemporary version of the Parian Chronicle. How on earth did Alison Cadbury, a foreigner and a poet, land on this island with rudimentary Greek, become assimilated and evolve into the town crier? While she tells us little about her own background, we get to know her as a gyristria (or gadabout) and her personality is revealed through her writing: She uses language beautifully, she is an empathetic listener and powerful observer of detail. Her personality is reflected in the way the islanders embrace her, and the way she immerses herself in the lives of the olive growers, vintners, fishermen, butchers, priests, midwives and artists, not to mention the myriad shopkeepers, gossips and drunks. It's as if she set out to write a medieval encyclopedia, or Chaucer's Tales. Funny comments are frozen in time, like "It's only Roman," "Ta papoutsia!" and "Women do not tread grapes."

Cadbury's power of description is so keen as to border on magical. Every sentence is kataspro, or super-white! I love her descriptions of the land and the rich variety of flowers and plants. Every time she stops to admire the landscape, I feel like I'm standing next to her. I especially love the first walk from Naousa to Laggeri, the moment she watches a lizard on a cold autumn day and the two views of Naousa from a mountaintop. Stunning.

I learned a lot of island history from the author and I'm grateful for her knowledge of the customs and how they connect to agriculture, fishing, Christianity and superstition. There are some sections that I want to read again, just for the information: her lessons on noikokyrio, to mati, the agora and ta psaria. It is amazing that she was able to absorb all of this, not to mention the traditional dance styles. I like to imagine her on a winter night dancing into the wee hours. I have been told she is a very good dancer.

As the book unfolds, Cadbury seems to float through many levels of oral history. First the islanders tell her all the gossip, then over time, they begin to tell her the darker stories, the tragedies that chill the bones. I'm thinking of the tales of the Poloneza, the captain's wife and the schoolteacher.

The author writes beautifully about the inland coast of Laggeri and the deep troughs cut into the shore. I met a man in Paros who calls the troughs "rock channels" and says they were used to roll chunks of Parian marble onto ships for exportation. I wonder if anyone has confirmed his theory, or if the troughs will remain one of the island's enduring mysteries.

The overwhelming impression Cadbury creates is that of the power of the community, the communal spirit, the culture of constant communication that exists to this day on the island of Paros. Through one portrait after another, she shows us the distinct island personality that is creative, self-sufficient, full of peace and joy and jokes. She mourns the passing of time and the irrevocable transition to a tourist economy, and this nostalgia is the primary theme of the book. It made me terribly sad. I also felt sad to think of the author saying goodbye to this magical island and returning to her native Oregon.

Surely she will go back? Surely the distinct personality of the Parians has not changed, only adapted to the times?

Panigyri--a celebration of an endangered way of life
By Catherine Siskron
An amazingly original and multi-layered book on Greece, and a way of life endangered by globalization. Alison Cadbury weaves such diverse topics as ancient lore and fishing, icon painting and post modern art into a loving portrait of a village way of life and of the men and women who embody that life. The style is both poetic and easy to follow. I enjoyed it so much, I sent a copy to all my friends who have been to Greece! A great example of creative non-fiction--informative, nostalgic and, at the same time hopeful. The source of hope seems to be Cadbury's understanding of the complexity and longevity of Greek culture. It was especially poignant reading this book in the context of the current political and economic developments in Athens.

A Must-Have reference book for beginner or professional.
By Pauline C. Merrick
There are other books out there about DNA testing for genealogy, but this one is head and shoulders above. It presents up to date information for this evolving field, introducing the science of genetic genealogy in easy to understand chapters.
The three types of DNA testing are discussed, sorting out the advantages and limitations of each. The author leads you through how to interpret your own results, and how to use available tools to get the most thorough analysis. He discusses ethical issues surrounding "surprises" in your DNA and searching for birth parents. Simple charts illustrate the points he makes.
Whether you are a professional genealogist or just curious about your genetic makeup, this book will be an excellent reference source for many years to come.

I Highly Recommend this Book!
By J. Sanders
I have been working with genetic genealogy for five years, and I highly recommend this book! It has everything a beginner needs to know, and has all the topics someone with more experience might need to review now and then. Charts, diagrams, and clear explanations. If you have taken a DNA test and want to get the most from your results, this book will show you how to do that!

An Owner's Manual for Your DNA
By Richard H. Hill
This 240-page book is the most complete and up-to-date resource on genetic genealogy. While some material is too advanced for raw beginners, you will want this comprehensive book on hand as you work your way through the DNA testing process. Blaine clearly explains all the different DNA types and their individual inheritance patterns. Then he adds lots of supplementary information, including a great list of More Resources. Blaine naturally encourages readers to read his book from start to finish. But not many people read their vehicle owner's manual before taking their new car for a ride. Likewise, you don't need 100% of this knowledge before jumping into the exciting world of DNA testing. Furthermore, each topic will make much more sense when you have your own results to look at. Do read enough to understand the key points. For example, it's important to know that autosomal DNA passes on random selections of each parent's DNA. But you can get by without knowing exactly HOW recombination occurs. The subject of X-DNA inheritance confuses even experienced testers. So just skip that chapter until (and if) you encounter a situation where an understanding of X-DNA is needed. The book is available in both print and Kindle formats. I purchased the print version due to the many excellent tables and illustrations.

Amazon.com Review
Q & A with Sean McManus, author of Raspberry Pi for Dummies Sean McManus What was your first thought when you heard about the Raspberry Pi?

I felt a sense of wonder. Firstly, that the Raspberry Pi Foundation had managed to create such a powerful machine for such a cheap price. And secondly, wonder at the fantastic opportunities that it opens up for families, electronics hobbyists, and those who want to learn about technology.

Why do you think Raspberry Pi has become so popular so fast?

A lot of people have been waiting for exactly this kind of technology: something that makes programming and electronics accessible and affordable. A community has built up around the Raspberry Pi that inspires newcomers to want to get involved and learn about what they can do with the device.

The price is a big factor, too. It means that once you've thought of something you can do with the Raspberry Pi, it's a no-brainer to buy one. Some people want to build robots with it; some want to learn programming; some just want a high-definition media centre for playing their videos and music. It's incredibly versatile.

What makes the Raspberry Pi a great tool for getting younger people interested in programming?

The Raspberry Pi comes with the Python and Scratch programming languages in the recommended software version. Scratch is highly visual and is increasingly used in schools to teach younger children. It's well suited to making simple games and animations, but encapsulates a lot of the ideas that underpin most programming languages.

After that, young people can graduate to Python, which is more text-based. It is designed to make it easy to read program code, and it's widely used in the real world outside of education by companies including YouTube, Google, and Industrial Light & Magic.

The Raspberry Pi also makes it easy to use your programs to control your own electronic circuits, which is a lot of fun for people of all ages.

What is your favorite Raspberry Pi project?

There are so many out there in the community, that it's hard to choose. I think the one-button audiobook player Michael Clemens made for his wife's grandmother is my favourite, though. She is visually impaired and finds other audio players hard to use, so Michael made one that has just a single button to play and pause. She can hold down the button to go back one track. This is an example of the Raspberry Pi really improving the quality of someone's life. I love listening to audiobooks, so I can imagine how much this means to her.

Any advice for someone who just bought a Raspberry Pi and is ready to get started using it?

The Raspberry Pi comes as just a small circuit board and you have to connect your own keyboard, mouse and monitor. People sometimes experience problems because the keyboard and mouse they use aren't compatible with the Raspberry Pi, so it's worth doing a bit of online research to check compatibility before buying a new keyboard or mouse. I recommend keeping a stack of SD cards (clearly labeled!) so you can try out different versions of the operating system software, and keep one for Raspbmc, the media centre software.

Learn how to discover and install new software, too. There's a huge amount of free software you can install on your Raspberry Pi, and you can really personalize it by finding exactly the right software for your needs.

What's something you can do with a Raspberry Pi that might surprise people?

Most people know you can use the Raspberry Pi for programming, electronics, or as a media centre. So ironically, the most surprising thing is perhaps the most ordinary. You can also use it for creating documents and spreadsheets, doing basic photo editing, and browsing the Internet. The Raspberry Pi is not as fast as a modern PC, but it is still a great machine for younger family members to use for creative projects and homework.

Review
"Overall, the Raspberry Pi For Dummies book is an eclectic mix, just like anything Pi-related, of educational goodness which all but the most advanced of users will find something interesting within. Personally I've learned a handful of bits and bobs from it already, and am eager to let it guide me through some interesting things I might otherwise have passed up." (gadgetoid.com, April 2013) 'If you've been toying with the idea of finding out for yourself just what all the fuss surrounding the Raspberry Pi is about -- but are concerned that if you order one, you won't have a clue what to do with it when it arrives -- then this is absolutely the book you need.' (Tech Secondary, June 2013) 'If you have just purchased a Pi and are not sure where to begin, this book provides an excellent place to start.' (BCS: The Chartered Institute for IT, June 2013) "This book has personality and it's easy to like the style." (Raspberry Pi Pod, March 2014)

Ideal Balance of Hard and Soft, Tough and Easy...
By Let's Compare Options Preptorial
I reverse engineer circuits from JTAG ports to check on proprietary algorithms, so am tearing apart electronics all day long. When you look at the skyrocketing Raspberry Pi sales stats, about 70% are from folks looking to "build an inexpensive PC" whereas the other 30 are hobbyists with a few pros thrown in to chain with Propeller and other heavy hitters for more advanced applications. A few of us use them to customize testing tools, but that's another topic for another day, and NOT in this book.

This book covers ALL the big questions, especially for those just opening the package. It will save you a LOT of money by:

1. Showing you how to get the OS working without having to buy pre-packaged cards, which are themselves only downloads from the free sites anyway

2. Not having to buy the 12 other books either out or coming out that show you (with varying quality) piece-by-piece what either the hardware, software, assembly, Linux, OS, or other levels do one by one.

I'd recommend this to anyone planning to use this as an inexpensive PC, or planning on more advanced hobby work, because after you get all the pins, access, media vs. primary OS, etc. done you can then move on to more advanced, specialized applications from home automation to games, robotics, and much more.

Most of the younger, most advanced programmers on the planet (I work with a LOT of them) don't have a clue about some of the older assembly-level memory tricks, etc. and when you're using an SD card instead of a big drive, the discipline is a great eye opener even for old hacks like me. This beast is nearly 500 pages, compared to a lot of "specialty" Pi books at twice the price and 1/3 the page count, and every page is packed with great stuff for beginning and intermediate users. For reference and review, at this price, I'd also recommend it to seasoned old folks too if you really want to maximize your RP skill quickly, and save money re: above.

Lucid expanation introducing Raspberry Pi
By Paul Damron
I got the kindle edition. I've not read a lot of long works on my Kindle but this worked well for me. I especially like being able to jump to the section I want by using the table of contents. It inspired me to go ahead and order my own Raspberry Pi and start my own learning. I am very familiar with PC's and use one every day at home and at work but have never learned any programming. At age 65, I still want to learn new things!

This is the Pi book to get
By tonygo
I started teaching Computer Science in the UK for more than 40 years ago (11 to 19 years olds) and since retirement have been 'playing with' Arduinos and RPis. I am interested in home robotics, electronics, computing and photography. I am still learning Linux and Python.

This is the third manual for the Raspberry Pi that I have bought and is by far the best. It is bigger, 412 pages, packed with all the details a novice needs to get started but goes on much farther than the others in providing detailed hardware and software projects to a high level. It is also very competitively priced.

The writing is very clear and easy to follow with plenty of details, tables, tips, illustrations and screen shots. It explains how to keep your RPi computer up to date, download and install a wide range of free software for tasks such as word-processing, spreadsheets, photo editing, building a website and playing video/audio. The sections on programming include introductions to Linux, Scratch, Python and Pygame. The website associated with the has several useful items to download.

Where this book really scores with me is the last third, written by 'Grumpy' Mile Cook, well known in Arduino and RPi forums for his hardware projects stretching back to the early days of the BBC micro. Mike has lost none of his enthusiasm for building electronic add-ons for the computer to control. The projects are very well explained, with easy to follow instructions on obtaining parts and building the hardware. The necessary software to complete the project is fully explained in easy to understand instructions. He also explains how to add analogue to digital converters and how to use them. This section includes instructions on installing SMBus for I2C, which would have been very useful to me a couple of months ago.

The trouble shooting section and excellent index allows the user to quickly find answers to problems.

Of my three RPi manuals this is the easiest to use, covers the most topics and is the best value for money. If you need a Pi manual - get this one; it will save you hours of searching for essential information on the web.
