Very Good

The book covers a great deal of information, and the author is thorough in her knowledge. Unfortunately, as is true in most conservation books, authors will not give away all their information. Also, new products are not covered. It needs an addendum, an update, already. Still it is an excellent book for conservation.

This classic, infamous story in the Batman saga has been recolored with a more effectively cooler palette and set into context with an introduction and an afterword. Escaped from Arkham Asylum, villain deluxe Joker shoots Barbara "Batgirl" Gordon as part of his plan to drive her police commissioner father insane. Intending to prove that anyone can go mad after "one bad day" as he describes in his putative origin story, the Joker also kidnaps and torments Commissioner Gordon. I won't get into the story except to say that it's one of the better ones, and that any Batman / Joker fan (and anyone else who enjoys good stories) should definitely read it if they haven't already. This is a copy worth buying, even if you already own the softback, and keeping in your collection. I bought this, again, after seeing the trailers for the upcoming animated version this summer - I got excited and wanted a newer, more substantial version.

The print is amazing, with vibrant, dark colors and artstyle, and exactly how it was originally portrayed. The hardcover, under the sleeve, is embossed and quite nice. The binding is immaculate, and much easier to preserve than a comic book - you can read this without worrying about wrecking it. The jacket art is, in my opinion, one of the selling points, as it starts quite the conversation if guests see it sitting out.

I'm glad I purchased it, and would be willing to do so again if something happened to the copy I own. I've included some photos of the quality construction of the book. Obviously, as with any story, whether you like it or not is up to you, but the quality of the product itself is unquestionable.

You're going mad

Great price for a great book. You can never go wrong when buying a book written by Alan Moore. The man is a genius. He knows how to take something and flip it on its ears and make us see it a way it's never been seen before. I'm definitely biased towards him as a storyteller because "Watchmen" is my fifth favorite book of all time. I can read anything he's written and still be infatuated with his tales.
I don't want to give too much away to those that have not read the story before. All you really need to know is this is one of the most pinnacle stories in Batman's universe you will ever read. It's not a multiple chapter graphic novel; it's a single issue story, 46 pages long. It has tons of re-readable value. The inking you see here is not the same as from when it was published. Instead, Brian Bolland has colored it the way he originally envisioned it to be visually told, drawing your attention to certain items in famous scenes and flashbacks.
For $10 you cannot beat this deal and you won't regret it either.

The Ultimate Joker Story

When the Joker escapes from Arkham Asylum, he sets out to commit one of his worst crimes yet. He kidnaps Commissioner Gordon and uses Barbara Gordon to try to drive him insane, proving that everyone is just one bad day away from madness. As Batman races to stop the Joker and save Gordon, we see flashbacks of the Joker as a failed stand-up comedian and how one bad day changed him forever.

This is one of Alan Moore's most famous and controversial stories. It's also one of the most influential. Even though Moore insisted this wasn't the Joker's true origin, and the Joker states he can't remember his real origin, the first "Batman" movie based its story on "Killing Joke." Of course, Moore didn't invent the core of the story, either. The idea of the Joker as a criminal named the Red Hood who fell into a vat of chemicals came from an older Batman story. But this one is more well known.

Moore was able to do something few other writers have been able to achieve. He made the psychopathic serial killer Joker almost sympathetic while simultaneously making him completely repugnant. The origin story and the present-day crime are like polar opposites, showing the Joker as a younger man struggling to support his family, and also as the ruthless Joker kidnapping and killing in a twisted joke.

The artwork of this book is still amazing, especially with the corrected coloring. Brian Bolland is able to draw everything with realism, but without sacrificing the comic book feel. His use of shadows and lines is great.

This deluxe edition has some bonus stuff, like reference photos, comments from the artist, and a short story at the end about an obsessed fan. I think it's a great buy if you don't already have a copy.

The biggest controversy of this story was the Joker paralyzing Barbara Gordon. Well, not just paralyzing, but also stripping naked and pasting his photos on the walls to torment Gordon. It's horrifying and disturbing, just like it was meant to be. I won't get into whether Moore was right or wrong to include that, but I do believe it drives home the depths of Joker's evil. When he sits on a throne made of baby dolls with the naked Commissioner Gordon chained up and kneeling at his feet, it's hard to say he's been any more twisted in his entire career.

All in all, it remains just as poignant and haunting as it did when first released.

About the Author
Peter Gottschalk is the chair of the Religion department at Wesleyan University. He is the co-author of the scholarly text Islamophobia: Making Muslims the Enemy, which examines the depiction of Muslims in political cartoons. It was reviewed in The New York Times Book Review, and he was interviewed on CNN, NPR, Air America, and Voice of America,and was featured in USA Today, and The Washington Post's "On Faith" website. He lives in Middletown, CT.

Highly Recommended

American Heretics is a fascinating look at the history of religion and the associated intolerance within the United States. For a nation supposedly founded on freedom of religious choice, our society is remarkably judgmental. This book offers surprising insight into the way our religious snobbery has evolved over the years.

While not an overly long book, Peter Gottschalk manages to fit in an astounding amount of information. The book is well organized and easy to read. Gottschalk makes no religious or moral claims, nor does he attempt to lecture or preach. He simply provides the mirror reflecting our hypocrisy.

This is one of those books that pertains to everyone, regardless of your religious base (or lack thereof). I highly recommend this book to everyone. And please read with an open mind. You might be surprised at how much of yourself you see within these pages.

I highly recommend this book for its readable history and its sensible yet surprising conclusions. A nation founded on religious freedom has a history of discriminating against one religion after another after another; as each religion is assimilated into the larger culture, another becomes the target. One wonders who will be next after we tire of persecuting Muslims.

This is a very good overview of the history of religious development in America. I did some sidebar research to verify a number of the ideas,facts, and concepts the author presented. I actually gained a better insight into the evolution of American Religion as a result. Sadly, not enough concerning Black American Religious evolution was presented. It is well known that the Black American Interpretation of Christianity was the most important belief system that underscored the survival of African Americans. While Christianity is generally declining in America, The Christian Faith (however corrupt it may be) remains strong in Black America.

About the Author
From an early age, Rupert Spira was deeply interested in the nature of reality. At the age of seventeen he learned to meditate, and began a twenty-year period of study and practice in the classical Advaita Vedanta tradition under the guidance of Dr. Francis Roles and Shantananda Saraswati, the Shankaracharya of the north of India. During this time, Spira immersed himself in the teachings of P. D. Ouspensky, Krishnamurti, Rumi, Ramana Maharshi, Nisargadatta Maharaj, and Robert Adams, until he met his teacher, Francis Lucille, in 1997. Lucille introduced Spira to the Direct Path teachings of Atmananda Krishna Menon, the Tantric tradition of Kashmir Shaivism (which he had received from his teacher, Jean Klein), and, more importantly, directly indicated to him the true nature of experience. Spira lives in the UK and holds regular meetings and retreats in Europe and the United States.

Interesting and varied ways of looking at fat

I might not have otherwise read this book were it not assigned reading for my graduate course on the anthropology of food, but I found it to be a fascinating read. After I read the eight assigned essays (out of 14), I continued to read them all and was glad I did. I think the compilation of essays is a very interesting way to present and explore the concept of fat, representing a complex and diverse array of views.

Some of the ways fat is explored is as an aesthetic, as a substance to be guarded or discarded, valued and desired, or abhorred. Most importantly, the essays examine the social, political, psychological, and historical contexts in which "fat" is constructed. I would recommend at least a few of the essays to friends (and have), in particular the essays on olive oil and Starbucks.

While I thought some of the essays might be a little dated (the book was published in 2005 and I read it in 2011) (e.g. the essay titled "Phat"), the book nevertheless presented valuable and intriguing points of view. I think it challenges people to think about fat in new ways.

Very interesting read that made me think about many different aspects of the word "fat." I learned a lot about different things related to fat such as the olive oil industry to Swedish teenagers trying to avoid being fat to the stories of men who suffer from AIDS who cannot put on fat. This book teaches a lot about the different variations of fat culture and I would recommend it to anyone who wants an interesting read!

I very much enjoyed reading this interesting and well researched book. I found lots of new information about FAT that lead me to ask more questions on the topic of FAT. I learned a lot. This is not a boring scholarly book but rather an adventure in learning. FAT is interpreted many different ways. There were angles and perspectives I had never contemplated before. A great read!

About the Author
PEGGY SUE GERRON was a teenager in Lubbock, Texas, with Buddy Holly when his hit song, “Peggy Sue,” made her an iconic part of rock ’n roll history. Today her namesake, “the first international rock anthem,” still hits the record charts in one part of the world or another, leading a Holland newspaper to dub Peggy Sue “the most famous woman in the world.” Peggy Sue’s tireless efforts “to keep the music alive” helped found the Buddy Holly Center, the Buddy Holly Festival, and the Crossroads of Texas Festival in Lubbock, drawing thousands from around the world to Buddy Holly’s hometown. She now works in Lubbock to prevent domestic violence and drug abuse. GLENDA CAMERON earned her M.A. from Texas Tech University, trained in substance abuse counseling, and taught school for more than thirty years. She coordinated several music festivals in Lubbock, co-founded the Rapunzel anti-drug program and RADAR TOWER, Inc. for addicted youth, and co-produced “Where Are They Now,” a VH1 Documentary, “Jerry Naylor: The Rockabilly Legends.” PEGGY SUE and GLENDA co-hosted a radio talk show, RAVE ON, filling the Texas airwaves for many years.

Interesting behind the scenes information not found elsewhere

I bought the hardbound copy of this book in 2008, signed by both authors. It's a good book with a lot of interesting information not found elsewhere, and difficult to put down.

Peggy Sue's recollections of events 50 years earlier are generally believable, and there are different perspectives here about Buddy Holly, her husband Jerry Allison, producer and manager Norman Petty, and Buddy's short-term wife, Maria Elena, than found in any other biography. Peggy Sue describes her husband as being a partier, adulterer, and alcoholic. She paints a warmer picture of Norman Petty than have other biographers, indicating that Buddy Holly continued his association with him and was making plans with Petty up until the end of his life. As far as Maria Elena, per Peggy Sue she had a definite attitude and was Buddy's "Yoko". After she met and married Buddy, the Crickets soon broke up and Buddy moved to New York. He made demo tapes in his New York apartment. Then followed his tragic death. Exactly the same scenario happened with John Lennon. Plus the miscarriages that both Maria Elena and Yoko suffered. That is, if Maria Elena was actually pregnant or just thought she might have been. I have read elsewhere that Maria Elena's pregnancy was never confirmed, and she didn't even see a doctor when she allegedly had a miscarriage in the bathroom, plus no one in the Holley family had known anything about this at the time. Maria Elena told the story of her purported pregnancy many years after Buddy died.

Although I really like the book and all the behind the scenes information, she tends to paint a picture of both Buddy Holly and especially herself as poised, mature, wise and clear-thinking adults in every situation she describes. Peggy Sue was a teenager at the time, and how she states she responded to other people is just too "wise beyond her years" for a teenager. And she makes some questionable claims, such as Buddy Holly stopping an elevator between floors about 3 months after marrying Maria Elena to confide in Peggy Sue that he had a lawyer drawing up divorce papers. If that is true, it's sort of odd that Buddy would have continued to live with Maria Elena for the following couple months before his death. She says he also told her to divorce his pal and drummer Jerry Allison (who she generally has nothing good to say about), and mentions that Buddy Holly attempted to be intimate with her and implies a couple times that he maybe was interested in marrying her.

Another problem is that the book is filled with quotations of conversations that took place 50 years earlier. She says she kept a journal, but unless she was carrying a tape recorder or taking shorthand in a notebook while talking to people at the time, all of the conversations within quotation marks are fictitious. No one has the ability to recollect verbatim, word for word, specific conversations between several people that took place decades ago - certainly not after 50 years. In this respect, the book is more a novelization based on facts.

Nevertheless, the book is essential and very worthwhile for Buddy Holly fans as it provides behind the scenes information and a different perspective from previous biographies of Buddy Holly. I'm glad she wrote her story.

I was 8 years old "the Day the Music died", but I remember it well. I also saw both ''The Buddy Holly Story" movie and the stage play of the same name.
This book gives a contrasting testimonial to what ACTUALLY occurred from the person best abled to testify. Therefore, I was anxious to read Peggy Sue's viewpoint of the story regarding the meteoric rise of Buddy Holly and The Crickets, and another opinion of producer Norman Petty and what led to the tragedy north of Clear Lake, Iowa. It also clarifies much of Peggy Sue's relationship with both Holly and her ex-husband, Jerry Allison. To me, it also clarified what I consider the strange relationship between Holly and his bride, Maria Santiago. This book is a 'must read' for anyone who is interested in the first decade of rock & roll. It's ONLY fault is that Peggy Sue's diary contains nothing about Buddy's earliest records when he recorded as Buddy & Bob. Nevertheless, that doesn't detract from this wonderfully written book. Buy it !!! It was difficult to put down !

For Blue, meeting Ellie breaks down walls of protection errected around his life;One filled with loss of his parents, early and his wife five years ago. Ruth Wind - Where have you been all my life?

I am one of those people who never pays any attention to "category" romances - just breeze right by them--so this book was my first exposure to Ruth Wind. Boy, have I been missing out! She is a fabulous writer, with the ability to wrap a location around you, people it with believable characters, and even give you a sound track to go with it. I devoured this book in two days, with the house practically falling down around me, but I couldn't stop until I had all the answers. I loved the characters--small town, but not cliches or caricatures, and I loved Pine Bend, with it's heat and its food, it's sorrows and its secrets. I can't get enough of Pine Bend, and I can't get enough of Ruth Wind. Anyone who is getting tired of romantic suspense, or who wants something a little more in-depth and darker-edged than Krentz or Roberts, look no further.

It was a good story with unexpected endings.

It was more of a mystery than a romance. I prefer to be more emotionally drawn in than this book provided. However, someone looking for more human relationships fiction and mystery might enjoy this more than I did.

Ellie traveled to Pine Bend, Texas, to do research for a book she was writing about Mabel Beauvais. Mabel was a blues singer who disappeared twenty to thirty years earlier. Ellie was also trying to discover who her father was. She knew he was in Pine Bend when Ellie was conceived. Ellie's mother died when Ellie was six months old. The story was a little frustrating when Ellie talked to people who knew answers to her questions but refused to tell her anything. The ending was satisfying and the answers to the mysteries were good and unexpected. Although there was some underlying sadness in the story due to so many good young men dying in the Vietnam war, leaving their loved ones to live on without them.

Regarding the SPOILERS below,I am not giving away answers to the main mysteries.

CAUTION SPOILERS:
Ellie and Blue fell in love. The problem for them was that everyone Blue had loved had died on him, so he was reluctant to love again. Why he changed his mind at the end of the book and decided to be with her and not fear losing her was not clear enough for me.

I was also confused with a few scenes throughout the book titled "The Lovers." When reading them I wasn't sure if they were a dreams of Ellie or Blue or were flashbacks to events in the lives of Mabel or Ellie's mother. At the end of the book I concluded they were of Ellie's parents, but I would have preferred knowing this earlier when reading them.

About the Author
Marita L Kinney is woman of many talents. Both a published author and motivational speaker, Marita has inspired hundreds of people to overcome adversity with triumph through faith and perseverance. In March of 2009 Marita published her very first book entitled “The Unspoken Walk”. Capturing the true essence of what it means to turn “lemons into lemonade”, she has taken the harsh lessons of life and developed a plan for successfully living. The Unspoken Walk has afforded Marita the opportunity to travel all over the country spreading the wonderful joys of her faith with anyone willing to hear it. Marita proved to be destined to preach like her father, the late Bishop Westley C Robinson. Marita is also wife of Comedian, Saxophonist, and Motivational Speaker Demoine Kinney. She is a successful business woman and has established herself as a source of inspiration, influence, and encouragement to many women (young and old) in her community through an organization called Joy Falls Ministries. She is also a Advocate for The National Bone Marrow Donor Program, helping to educate minorities on the lack of minority donors and how it affects the community. Marita has been selected by the National Association Of Professional Women as the 2010/2011 "Woman of the Year". In December 2009, Marita launched the first of many Unspoken Walk retreats. There young women were able to connect, form strong relational bonds, and develop a support system helping them reach their full potentials. With a heart to serve, she humbly allows God to direct her ministry going wherever the spirit of God leads her.

Strength and provision from the grace of God

I will admit that I have read numerous books on trials and triumphs but this one had me glued to my seat from start to finish. Too I admit that the trials, one after another that author Marita Kinney had to endure unsettled me somewhat. I looked for breakthrough after breakthrough and instead found her experiencing another setback. Looking back I see the hand of God in that, all along the way, with each successive trial emerged a stronger women that refused to quit and today embodies strength of both character and spirit that is hard to surpass.

Where the natural world would look at her being raised by a single parent, experiencing the murder of her brother, death of her father and divorce with 2 small children as a disaster, God saw it as a means by which he would take each incident and show Himself strong in provision. Having been raised in church did not aid her in right free will choosing. It was only following her father's death and murder of her brother that she faced a crossroad and made a decision for Christ in her early twenties.

Author Kinney shares the faithfulness of God and how He met her at every turn financially, emotionally, and spiritually. As her trials continued her indomitable will and then strong spirit would have her declare "I could have checked out and given up on life. No, but I was determined to live and not be bitter."

After you read this story from cover to cover you too will discover what she declares in that the Lord was preparing her to minister to hurting people. You will not be so lost in her story that you will fail to reflect on your own. Instead, as you see the hand of God move, it will encourage you to know that no trial is too difficult that God cannot see you through. May you find discovered in these pages and woven throughout your life that biblically weeping does endure for a season but joy comes in the morning.

The Unspoken Walk

My, my, my!!! How I enjoyed this book....this "testimony!!!" I never read a book more than once, but I'm sure I'll be reading this one again! I could totally relate to some of the situations the author went thru. Oh, but to be kept by JESUS!!! If you're looking for something encouraging to read....this is a great one!!!
I'll be recommending this book to my fellow readers!
