Dark, comedic targedy in post-Celtic Tiger Dublin

Belying the bleak monochrome cover of this book which immediately conjures thoughts of the First World War, City of Dis is set in modern-day, post Celtic Tiger Dublin. The book is peopled by the most dislikeable bunch of characters imaginable. The central character vacillates, wavers and is borne along on a wave of apathy and indecision, not sinning by commission, but by omission and greatly sinned against.
Joseph Mary "Danger" Danaher is a thoroughly detestable man, incoherently violent and so real, so beautifully delineated, his thick guttural speech rises up off the page to assault the ear and his presence in the chapters he inhabits overwhelms the reader with a deep visceral distaste.

The speech patterns of Yelena, a manipulative, beguiling Polish criminal are so accurate and so natural that her every utterance reminds us that David Butler is an accomplished poet as well as a rising star of Irish Prose.

The book is a wordy, eloquent, elegant pleasure to be savoured, not a fast read. This is a challenging, rewarding, poetic, shocking work. After many dead ends, red herrings and false trails, the final chapters unwind with a sudden certain dread and apprehension of a fate that we see unravelling in front of us, and hope that we are wrong. As in life, it is the wholly innocent who suffer most in the tangled web of gangland and financial criminality of the dark underbelly of the city.

Highly recommended.

Butler is also an accomplished short story writer whose name has appeared on many long/shortlists of reputable international fiction contests and the winner of several, including the Fish short story contest and the Maria Edgeworth.
A thoroughly versatile writer, equally at home in the long and short form.

An introduction explains that governments believed Native people were ignorant and made laws to educate their children. Shi-shi-etko counts down her last four days before going away. She tries to memorize everything about her home–tall grass swaying to the rhythm of the breeze, determined mosquitoes, working bumblebees. There is a family party to say good-bye. Her father takes her out in a canoe and implores her to remember the trees, the water, and the mountains, and her grandmother gives her a small bag made of deer hide in which to keep her memories. The vivid, digital illustrations rely on a red palette, evoking not only the land but also the sorrow of the situation and the hope upon which the story ultimately ends. This contemplative narrative will help children see how Native people have been treated in both Canada and the United States. Gr. 2-4. Using gentle rounded shapes and rich autumnal colors, LaFave captures the events that take place during the three days before a young Canadian girl must leave her home. Author Campbell's foreword explains the harsh government policies that, until 1984, separated Native American children as young as four from their parents, though her story conveys only that Shi-shi-etko, whose name means "she loves to play in the water," is going away to school. Before she leaves, the girl visits the creek with her mother, goes canoeing with her father, and collects sprigs from trees with her grandmother. The loving adults urge her to treasure these memories, and the girl looks and listens carefully. Without dwelling on the impending separation, the lyrical text is, nevertheless, poignant, as is the last picture of children in the back of a pickup truck driving away. Although Shi-shi-etko appears to be about five or six, the audience for her story will be slightly older children, who can grasp the implications of her fate and understand that the story takes place in the past. Talk about a picture book to tear at my heart strings and boil my blood. This story is so heart wrenching and maddening at the same time as being so beautiful in tradition until the horrible new white man made tradition of sending Native American children off to residential schools to unlearn their native ways.

My heart broke at each new day for Shi-shi-etko and her family.

Beautiful story, and appropriate for even younger children

I got this book to introduce my little one to the injustices visited upon the First Nations people, but also to share some of the beauty of that culture. It is beautifully written, and completely appropriate for kids as young as six, I would say.

About the Author

Peter Chan was born in Taiwan in 1980 and moved to Hong Kong at the age of 10. Interested in drawing and painting, Peter attended Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, U.S.A. where he began to focus his skills in fine arts. Afterwards, he received his B.F.A. in Furniture Design from the Rhode Island School of Design. It is not until Peter went to Art Center that he found his passion in the entertainment industry. Peter now works as a concept artist in Los Angeles, and feels very lucky to be drawing and painting everyday with great people!

At a young age, John's creative process began by doodling images from his imagination. He started attending Saturday High at Art Center for high school students, then transitioned into product design at Art Center College of Design. During his early educational terms at Art Center one of his greatest mentors, Scott Robertson, inspired John to commit to entertainment design. Now John is an entertainment design student at Art Center with a few terms left, ready to take on the next challenge ahead.

Justin was born in Los Angeles in 1986. At an early age, Justin started recording his experiences and surroundings through drawing, including his doctor visits, family vacations, trains, etc. Inspired by his grandfather, a painter in Thailand, he was determined to pursue the visual arts. Justin took classes in painting, figure drawing and comic book design in his teen years. Later, he attended Saturday High classes at Art Center College of Design, where he was subsequently accepted. For two summers, he interned at Design Studio Press, where he worked on various video games. Justin recently graduated from the Entertainment Design department at Art Center.

Ben Mauro is a Los Angeles-based artist and designer. He studied industrial design and entertainment design at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. He is currently working on freelance projects and looking for design opportunities in the entertainment industry.

Thom Tenery holds a Bachelor of Science degree� in Architecture and studied entertainment design and illustration at Art Center College of Design. Eight years of architectural and interior design, along with a passion for art, science fiction and film, led him to a career in concept design. When not roaming the stacks of used bookstores he can be found immersed in the visual development of his own worlds. Thom is currently a concept artist at ID Software.

Scott Robertson started his secondary education at Oregon State University, then transferred to Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. He graduated in 1990 with honors and a B.S. degree in Transportation Design. After Art Center he immediately opened a consulting firm in San Francisco, where he designed a variety of consumer products. In 1995, he began teaching at Art Center College of Design, first with a year-and-a-half stint at Art Center Europe in Vevey, Switzerland and then in Pasadena, California. Scott’s clients have included the BMW subsidiary Designworks/USA, Bell Sports, Raleigh Bicycles, Mattel Toys, Patagonia, Minority Report feature film, Nike, Universal Studios, Rockstar Games, Sony Online Entertainment, Buena Vista Games and THQ to name a few. Dedicated to art and design education, he founded the publishing company Design Studio Press in 2002.� He has authored or co-authored 8 books furthering design, drawing and rendering education and has co-produced 41 educational “how to” DVDs with The Gnomon Workshop. Scott himself has instructed on 9 DVDs, focusing on drawing and rendering techniques for industrial and entertainment designers. He continues to teach at Art Center and serves as Chair of the Entertainment Design department. Scott is married to film editor Melissa Kent.

Alien Race: Ahead by a nose!

I would like to start by saying that I am by no means an authority on concept art, although I am a freelance artist. I am also by no means a professional science fiction critic, though I have been a sci-fi fan for as long as I can remember. Lastly, I may have given the book 4 stars but that's only because I can't give it 4 and a half.

Simply put, 'Alien Race: A Visual Development of an Intergalactic Adventure' is a stunning, well put together and artistically inspiring piece of creativity in book form. Designed as a collection of concept art, stories and ideas developed for a possible intellectual property, the book explores the various characters, creatures, environments and plot angles that might go into the creation of a film, animated cartoon, tv series or video game. While no such use of the material in 'Alien Race' actually exists as of this review (unfortunately), the artwork and concepts contained within the pages of this book could easily be from a 'making of the movie' book for a popular film.

Especially impressive is the way multiple artists and designers approached the same or similar concepts in the book. I also liked how they showed the ideas they did not go with, again bringing to mind the concept designs seen in the 'art of' or 'making of' books for currently developed properties like the J.J. Abrams Star Trek film or the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series for example.

So why not five stars? Well, its a personal preference really and has less to do with the quality of the book itself. I felt a couple of the ideas in the book were underdeveloped and would therefore hinder its use as a 'real' property. The 'human team', that is those participants in the 'Alien Race' who hail from Earth, seemed visually underwhelming in comparission to their alien counterparts. Again this is just my personal aesthetic and not a reflection of the work. Also, the Flyers, those creatures that fly in the race, seemed less diverse and astounding then their ground based cousins even though they travel threw the air which is the more exotic environment.

If there is ever an 'Alien Race II' I'd love to see creatures that swim or climb and perhaps some insectoid lifeforms. That said, this book is definitely a triumph in that my only complains are wanting more.

About the Author
DIANE ISAACS was born and educated in Los Angeles. After her children were almost grown, she returned to school. She started from the beginning at Pasadena City College, receiving an AA with honors in Political Science for Superior Achievement. During that time she did an independent research on The Holocaust, and then continued on to receive her bachelor s degree in the field of Human Development from Pacific Oaks College. From there Diane went on to Phillips Graduate Institute where she received her master s degree in Marriage and Family Counseling and is today, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. In 1994 Diane completed her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology. Her background includes special training in Management of Stress, Human Sexuality, Menopause, and the Psychology of Color. She is specially trained and certified to deal with issues of grief and has been on the faculty at Pasadena City College where she taught Early Childhood Development. Diane has been an advocate representative, nationally and locally, for the International Fibromyalgia Network, where she counsels individuals with Fibromyalgia, Crisis Management, and Referral Services. Her specialization is in Dual Career Marriages, Human Sexuality, Groups, Self Esteem, and Relationship issues, and she is now working with families to deal with chronic illness, death and grief. Currently, she is devoting part of her time to writing. Diane s professional speaking experience includes being a speaker on Stress In the Medical Marriage for the National Council on Family Relations Annual Conference Program in Dallas, Texas in 1985. She has facilitated many workshops on Self Esteem and Its Importance In Our Everyday Life. She has been a co-facilitator for the Southern California Arthritis Association in local areas for the disease Fibromyalgia. Diane was a guest speaker at the First World Congress on Electroejaculation for the Infant International Symposium, in conjunction with Urologists from all over the world, in the field of Human Sexuality. She has spoken in the Los Angeles area to physicians wives on Stress in the Medical Marriage for many district organizations in the Los Angeles County Medical Association Alliance. From 1974 through 1993 Diane worked for her late husband, as a business manager, and liaison between patients and physicians. She has published a paper entitled, Stress in the Medical Marriage, which is on file in several research libraries. Her latest paper was her published dissertation entitled, The Counseling Psychology and Sociological Impact of Liver Transplantation on Liver Recipients and Their Families. Diane is a member of LACMA (Los Angeles County Medical Association Alliance); the La Ca�ada Chamber of Commerce, Alumni of Pacific Oaks, and Phillips Graduate Institute. She is also a member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapists, as well as the California Association of American Marriage and Family Therapists. Other organizations include the American Association of University Women, and Ort. She resides with her new husband Jim, and her beloved Molly and Monet in La Ca�ada, California. She is spending her time in a small private practice and writing her next book.

Charming and clever approach!

This book was easy to read. It offered a charming twist to a serious situation. When I first saw the title, I thought it was about a little girl being introduced to a famous artist, but soon learned I was wrong. I thoroughly enjoyed the story...not sure enjoyed is the right word, as it was based on tragic events.......but it showed how human strengths prevail.

Content that heals

This book was referred to me after being diagnosed with a devastating disease. I was hesitant. What are two dogs going to tell me that I haven't already heard? Well, was I surprised at how healing this little story has been to me. Nothing too heavy but content that brought peace to a very uncertain time in my life. Thank you, Diane, for this story!

Romance novels, Unless they are Paranormal (yes, I know typical for most) I have not had a knack for them. Suspense, Thriller it didn't matter no matter what I did I had a hard time getting into them and then. I was given this book as a Review assignment from my director Kitty Bullard, She told me I just had to read it that I would enjoy it and that it would change my mind. I'm always open to try new things. Give them that good old fashioned try and so I did. Never will I admit this often but she was right. I didn't just enjoy it. I loved it. I loved it. It was fast paced and suspenseful but left me guessing at each possible angle and scenerio that could come of the multiple stalker situation. It had me grow that affinity for Casey where one minute I wanted to hug her and try to help comfort her from her horrible past to where the next I wanted to shake some sense into her out of frustration and the situations she allowed herself to get into.

Casey is clearly suffering from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) where it affects some and they shut down or close themselves off , This is what I've heard call the Fight or Flight response. she has chosen to take what I call the Fight approach in stead of flight making her strong willed and defiant to the end. Refusing to admit that she can't handle anything on her own. She struggles like some of the men that have this disorder to relinquish control and to admit that this is a moment they need help. It shows just how much of that can be destructive to herself and others. Maybe I read a little more into the character than I should have but I found her well developed and proof of ones life , trials and tribulations things that happen some of them more shocking than one might admit or know can alter a person and their personality greatly. It's this and coming home that is allowing Casey to do the one thing she never really thought she would be able to do and that is face her past and possibly heal herself to save her future.

Scott is the good cop with a family background but he himself has issues refusing to settle down or make anyone deal with what his mother had to go through as being a cop ran in the family. He's just a good ol' boy that never expects to find a woman completely off what he figures to be his "type" in Casey not only is she his best friends sister but she's everything that infuriates and frustrates him but all in a completely good way. Making his job as bodyguard only that much harder while she's back home in her home town. The two having to deal with her family hiding the fact she's been stalked by a crazy serial killer and the rest of the stalkers who have a claim to her one odd way or another. Thinking everything she says or does is about them.

Once again I thoroughly enjoyed this book and perhaps , perhaps I'm definitely looking for more from this Author

"Forget Me Not is exciting and suspenseful..."

As Casey Martinez tries to put her painful past behind her, a stalker sets his sights on her. The FBI wants Casey far from her home in New York, so Casey heads back to Texas where her brother lives and her nightmares still remain. Detective Scott Weller is assigned as Casey's bodyguard. Scott doesn't want the job, and Casey doesn't want him there either. That's about the only thing they have in common, except sizzling mutual sexual attraction, which Casey is determined to keep hidden. With a killer on the loose Scott has to keep his feelings separate from his job. Keeping her safe is just as hard as keeping his distance.

Forget Me Not is exciting and suspenseful. While I was engaged and anxious to see how things would play out, subtle clues dropped here and there gave me a few guesses as to what might happen next. Scott charms with his good looks, sexy Texan drawl, and southern manners. While I liked Casey's feistiness, she borders on ice queen at times, especially toward Scott. And her smoking habit is unappealing. Her personality traits are understandable, considering what she's been through, and she does warm up, but she's a tough nut to crack. Forget Me Not is a good story, and it's packed with danger and action.

Great Read!!

OKay, so I don't usually read romantic books but I like to keep an open mind. I decided to read "forget Me Not" because it's more of a romantic thriller. I enjoyed the plot of the book although I did find it a little frustrating at times that the character seemed to act belligerent at times where she should have been grateful. -However, I still enjoyed the character and I was still able to sympathize with her. I think it would have been useful (from a reader's perspective) to read more details about Casey's past so I could understand her behavior a little better. Also, I LOVED Scott's character. He just sounded like such an awesome guy.
I enjoyed the writing as well. Terri Molina has a wonderful talent for telling stories. When I get lost in a story and really start to care about the characters I can always tell when the book I'm reading is a good one. I appreciated this book and I look forward to reading another one from her!!

a compelling case against cynical art

This is a well written book that takes on some of the prescient problems of the art world today. Thankfully Mr. Wheelock steers clear of the kind of jargon that October peddles and makes one want to reach for a gun. I actually like some of Cattelan's work, but that doesn't keep me from agreeing with the premise of the book. A must for anyone who is interesting in contemporary art, or who wonders why so much of it is thin and tiring.

Wheelock follows an historic thread that runs through Duchamp, Warhol and Klein with an eye toward these artists' concepts of what constitutes an artwork. He uses Cattelan's career as a teaching tool, explicating the current issues of the art market in concrete terms.

Terrific, post-Parachute guide to new laws of physics in a turbulent career universe

This is an outstanding book. The author points out that most of us fail to truly manage our careers. Instead, we "find one job in a row," approaching each new work life episode as an ad hoc transaction. But we need to replace transactions with relationships and tactics with strategy, according to the author. Most of all, he says, we need a bigger theory of the game.

Three Career Questions really shines when the author presents his "orbital mechanics" approach to career management. Avoid preparing a heroic, one-time rocket launch designed to crash-land on Planet Job (and sometimes requiring the Parachute!), he says. Instead, select a distant object in the career solar system and navigate steadily toward it, borrowing energy from planets (organizations) along the way and using the "gravity slingshot" effect to propel you forward.

Navigation, says the author, is accomplished by continuously asking and answering the Three Career Questions -- the threads that tie the methodology together.

Three Career Questions is somewhat repetitive and the writing wordy in places. But it's a terrific, post-Parachute guide to the new laws of physics in a turbulent career universe.

Clients say it's a winner!

I have recommended this book to several clients now and have gotten great feedback regarding it. While I thought it was terrific as a way the think strategically about a career path, the real "proof of the pudding" is whether people who are in the midst of making career decisions find it useful. The three clients who were or are using it, have all said they found it provocative and made them think more deeply about their next steps. Oh, and it's a fun read as well. How much better could it get?

Finally--The Career Book that Needed to be Written, and Needs to be Read

This is my new favorite career book and is already being woven into my career advising sessions with students and alumni of the liberal arts college whose career center I direct. Besides being for the career advisor who wants to up his or her game with clients at all levels of career sophistication, this book is one I'll strongly recommended for college students really ready to get their career off on the right foot. And it's a must-read for graduates in the workforce a few years, experiencing their first bout of Where am I going? What am I doing? What else is out here for me? I've sent several copies out to alumni clients because I'm so excited about this book and want to jumpstart our conversations after the holidays.

Paraphrasing some of the author's many suggestions: Summarize the work value you deliver in 8 words. Get out of your head and productively conversant with key people in your circle and beyond. Pay attention to these 10 pathways to professional development that you may be overlooking. Do a personal SWOT analysis that takes 5 minutes and is immediately actionable. Address your weaknesses by developing a related strength using a very simple, straightforward tactic...all great.

Decent books on how to find a job abound, but what I love about about this one is that it takes the conversation to the higher level of strategy and is as relevant for the long-employed as it is for the first-job seeker. I found myself nodding in agreement over and over as the author validated some of my own thinking, but more often than not took my strategies for effective career advising to the next level.

The book's conversational and enjoyable, intuitive and memorable--and its advice, logic, and simplicity is utterly irresistible. Just the right balance of reference to theory, case scenarios, and most importantly, concrete advice for addressing the three questions, gives the reader a guidebook that can be used over and over to keep a step ahead of the tornado of career indecision and on the road to an optimized, satisfying career. Especially if you lack a top-notch career mentor or advisor, or a workplace environment that really nurtures career development, even a few chapters of this book are well worth the investment.

The fact that it is so thorough and relevant for even the most seasoned professional makes it clear that this book is the culmination of years of practice refining and validating its ideas in the field rather than an untested set of suggestions that just sound good. I'll look forward to the sequel. (Surely there are more than 3 questions!)

I love this book. I rented it from my local library and enjoyed it so much I've decided to purchase a copy. It is well designed & thought out. The illustrations are easy to follow and the instructions are easy to understand. I think it is a good book for the beginning botanical artist.
