Threading the catheter

At this point both the tip of the needle and the tip of the catheter are inside the vein. You will now need to thread the rest of the catheter into the vein. The catheter is fully inside the vein when only the hub sticks out. There are several different methods to advancing the catheter

The Two Handed Technique

You have already visualized flash, lowered your angle, advanced 1-2mm and released the tourniquet.

Continue holding the needle in place

With your non-dominant hand, grasp the hub of the catheter and slide it forward into the vein

Slowly withdraw the needle

Place your thumb on the hub of the catheter to hold it in place

Use your index finger to press down above the site to prevent blood from spilling out

The Single Handed Technique

You have already visualized flash, lowered your angle, advanced 1-2mm and released the tourniquet.

Continue holding the needle in place.

Use the index finger of the hand that is holding the needle to slide the catheter past the needle

Continue sliding the catheter until it is fully inside the vein.

With the above two techniques, be careful that you are only advancing the catheter into the vein and not the needle. If the catheter is inside the vein it should be relatively easy and painless to advance it. Unlike the needle, the catheter is soft and flexible so it will be difficult to slide it in unless you are inside the vein.

10/10 Awesome guide for new nurses

I highly recommend this book to all the new grads, like myself. I get so hesitant to start IVs most of the time because I worry about looking incompetent in front of my patient if I don't get the vein on the first try. This book definitely gives me the knowledge and confidence boost that I need to perfect this skill. This book perfectly explains all you have to know in regards to IV insertion and different techniques/tips/tricks. It is easy to read, concise, and comprehensive. It isn't like those long, boring, textbook style of books. This goes straight to the point. I love the pictures/visuals that help you understand the concepts clearly. Perfect guide for new grads, EMTs, and perhaps even the seasoned nurses as well.

About the Author
William Renwick completed B. Mus, and M. Mus. degrees at the University of British Columbia, following which he took the M. Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in Music Theory at the City University of New York, where he specialised in Schenkerian studies under Carl Schachter, Joel Lester, and Charles Burkhart. He is Professor of Music Theory in the School of the Arts, McMaster University. His research interests encompass studies in tonal counterpoint and analysis and Gregorian chant as well as computer applications in music research. His publications include Analyzing Fugue: A Schenkerian Approach (Pendragon, 1995), and The Langloz Manuscript: Improvising Fugue from Thoroughbass (Oxford, 2001), as well as articles in Journal of Music Theory, Music Theory Spectrum, Music Analysis, Bach Perspectives, Music Theory Online, Theoria, Computers in Music Research, Canadian University Music Review, Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy, and other journals. He is currently working on the first modern edition of the Music of the Sarum Office. In 2002 he was a Fellow of the Mannes Institute for Advanced Studies in Music Theory. He is a founding member of the Gregorian Institute of Canada, and of the McMaster Institute of Music and the Mind. William Renwick is also an organist, composer, and choral director. He holds the Associate degree of the American Guild of Organists and the Fellow of the Royal Canadian College of Organists. He has performed concerts and recitals throughout the region. In 1999 he served as co-chair of The Canadian Organ Festival in Hamilton. He is Music Director at Saint Mary the Virgin Church in Hamilton Ontario, and director of the Hamilton Schola Cantorum.

Sweet, hot and funny

NO PLACE LIKE HOME is about running away from the heartache of rejection and the journey home to repair what has been broken.

This book was sweet, and hot, and funny and filled with lots of honest emotions. Cassie is weary of the twins' advances because she knows the power they have to hurt her and doesn't want to allow them to do it again. But the twins are forces to be reckoned with, sometimes too much so in my opinion, but it worked. I did feel that the progression into a relationship could have felt more natural and was a bit rushed, but the author made it feel like the actions were true to the personalities of Jackson and Markus. A great story with great characters.

This is one hot book. I enjoyed the book from the first to the last.

Cassie is a woman that knows what she wants to do and who she wants. The only thing is that Jackson and Markus turns her down. What is an 18 year old to do? She leaves and never comes back to the place that she has always called home. Cassie goes through so much. She wonders if she will ever be able to fall in love again and have a family. When her friends calls her and tells her she needs for her to come back home and help her out.

Jackson and Markus have decided that they want Cassie and they have waited seven years too long. Now if I was going to try a menage, these are the twins that I would pick. They are take charge kind of men and know what they want and aren't afraid to go after it.

If you are looking for a hot sexy read then this is the book for you. The only thing I didn't like was that one little question was never answered. I enjoyed the plot of the story. it was believable and something that I could really see happening. This is the first book that I have ever read by this author. I will just say that this will not be the last. I recommend that any one that loves menage and erotic scenes to read this book.

Essential guide to learn IBM SPSS statistics

This is one of the best guides to use SPSS out there. They're not in their 14th edition for nothing. Instructions are detailed enough for good understanding but still brief. Step-by-step instructions for use of SPSS are clear. Perhaps most importantly, how to interpret the statistics is also included. This book has only gotten better with each new edition. Best of all - the authors have a sense of humor, which in my view, is essential in a topic like this. I recommend this book to my master's level and Ph.D. level students. It's appropriate for undergraduate as well. This book is guaranteed to get used by anyone who purchases it to help them run their statistics.

So Full of Promise

Advertising "Principles and Experience" with software build tools, the
author demonstrates a surprisingly sophomoric depth of
understanding. Most of the book is presented at a very high level with
limited practical presentation.

Chapter 08 discusses the SCons tool with a section on debugging bad
builds. The --debug=presub command-line switch is introduced and
output presented. A particular environment variable is mentioned and
then some portion of the list of all environment variable definitions
in SCons is printed. The actual environment variable presented is
never found in the list, the result is never plugged into the template
command-line, and the "problem" is never debugged. The level of
understanding seems very much that of someone who has run the on-line
tutorial.

The feeling of reiterated tutorial continues in Chapter 10 on
Eclipse. I can figure out the panes of the workspace or else I can
fire up the Guided Tour that ships with the product. There is no need
to spend several pages on helping me figure out where source code is
displayed.

Chapter 06 focuses on GNU Make. The idea of a .flags file is mentioned
as a way to capture dependencies on command-line flags. Where is an
example? Is it better practice to have a .flags file per directory or
per source file? How do .flag files interact with the number of file
reads done by a build system (the topic of Chapter 19 when talking
about speeding up a build)?

There are a handful of editing errors and another, more annoying,
handful of technical errors. There is a discussion of running gdb
(why, in a book on building, do I get a tutorial on gdb? Shallow
coverage of a broad range of tools is on the menu) and the explanation
of the "list" command is incorrect.

For transparency's sake: I have maintained build tools for a
moderately sized research code base (using GMake), I have built tools
that interface with the Visual Studio project management system, and I
have taught software engineering for a decade. I may not have been the
intended audience and the (overly) broad, shallow coverage may be just
what a beginner needs (though I don't think so).

The book receives two rather than one star because it did cover tools
that I had not personally used previously (SCons), it taught me the
difference between makedepend and gxx -MM, and it mentioned Flex and
Bison. To paraphrase the book on most of the coverage, however,
"Unfortunately, this brief description of [build systems] barely
covered the basic features." And that isn't what "Practice and
Experience" promises.

A Gap-Filling Book for Software Developers Too

A Gap-Filling Book for Software Developers Too

Build system are often viewed as merely a script to compile the code. However there are much more to it. Read this book you'll find out. As an editorial review says, this book is also for developers in addition to build engineers.

As the book starts with, a survey showed that it is common developers losing 20~30% productivity due to build related problems. My personal estimate, at one of my previous work we spent more than 30% of time dealing with build breakages. Sometimes the problems are caused by the build system itself, some other times they are due to misuse of the system. It's worth for developers to learn the build system thus to avoid messing up with the build system.

For large software it is very difficult to figure out the dependencies among the components. To my view, if it is a C program, the only place the complete dependency information can be found is in the build system. Figuring out dependencies helps developers to better design/code/debug their software. To do so you'll have to know about the build system, or you may even need to fix the build system so you can get the information dumped for you.

I use code generation in my coding practice so that I can manage more logic in code and avoid tedious repetitive work [see Martin Fowler's DSL book Domain-Specific Languages (Addison-Wesley Signature Series (Fowler)) for more on this topic]. I also generate tests from the source code. To generate code the triggers have to be incorporated into the build system. Had I read this book I would have done my work more effectively.

Even if you are on a small project, often the code needs to be configured and customized for different versions and platforms, or products. The conditional customization part, can often either be in the source code like by C ifdef primitives or in the makefiles. Knowing the build system gives the developers an alternative way of thinking where it is best to put those conditional parts. Sometimes we track the definition of a predefined macro, and it may end up in a makefile. This is the time you have to understand the makefile to know how exactly that macro is defined and used. For this reason, I would say the build system is part of the source code implementation, knowing the build system is essential to the developers.

I give this book a 5-star rating because in some sense it fills the gap between developers and build engineers, and it brings an often ignored area to attention of developers. More principles, less experience

This book is a decent introduction to the world of build systems. Overall I expected more depth from it, and felt I barely got my money's worth, but it could be perfect for someone with less experience with complex build systems who wants to learn more about the field or got tasked with choosing and implementing a build system for a project.

It starts with a high-level discussion of concepts that are common across build systems. Then it goes into an overview of five common build systems - make, scons, cmake, Ant and the GUI-based Eclipse. Generally I felt this is the weakest part of the book as it does not go into depth with any of those tools, but it is useful if one wants to compare how several systems handle a common, simple scenario, and the praise/criticism/evaluation section towards the end of each tool's description is a nice summary. For a detailed manual of one of the covered build tools, tool documentation and other in-depth books on separate tools are a far better choice.

Part III, "Advanced topics", is a misnomer - it should be called "Beyond the basics". Once again the discussion becomes more abstract and covers dependencies and related issues, "metadata" (any products that are not the final executables - documentation, tests, etc.), managing tools, and towards the end two topics that are the most important - how to improve build speed and manage build size. I would not call any topic discussed to actually be "advanced" - that would be, for example, an in-depth analysis of an existing complex make-based build framework, or a careful dissection, with reasoning and trade-offs, of a big build system of an existing open source project, none of which are to be seen in this book.

Some parts simply do not belong to the topic at hand and seem to be added solely for expansion of size of the volume. For example, the whole chapter of installer systems, including a complete walk-through of creating a NSIS project, would better be left out. Version management is also discussed in far more detail in other books, but there at least there is a related tangent of what should and should not be stored in source control.

Forrest McDonald is Distinguished Research Professor of History at the University of Alabama and author of sixteen books, including States' Rights and the Union: Imperium in Imperio, 1776-1876; The American Presidency; The Presidency of George Washington; and The Presidency of Thomas Jefferson. He was named by the NEH as the sixteenth Jefferson Lecturer, the nation's highest honor in the humanities.

Interesting and Insightful !

Just what sorts of ideas were going on in the Framers' minds when the drafted the federal constitution? This book provides great insight into the ideas, concepts and intellectual history and framework that the Framers were operating upon.
An extremely capable historian and writer, McDonald starts out by noting some important considerations facing the Framers: protecting the life, liberty and property of citizens; their commitment to republican government (although there was disagreement and uncertainty as to what that precisely meant); history (in the sense of convention, legacy and their place in its continuing flow); and political theory.
The chapter on the Rights of Englishmen begins with the Framers understandings of freedom, liberty, and property-as inherited through English common law, refined by Blackstone, and developed independently in the New World. Blackstone considered property a third "absolute right," following life and liberty. Of course, he used the word property in the more narrow sense of dominion (rather than the sense of proper as something proper or particular to an individual person). In any case, McDonald discusses Blackstone's qualifications and exceptions to this absolute right, which allowed for the regulation of property (through sumptuary laws, eminent domain, taxation, and the granting of monopoly privileges). McDonald then relates America's experience in light of the English understandings and tradition. The emphasis on property is particular important because, until the Revolution, Americans' general views about liberty were grounded in the same kinds of historical, philosophical and legal foundations as their views of property.
McDonald's chapter on political theory is particularly enjoyable, as he traces the tensions existing amongst the different theories of rights held by the Framers, as well as some of their respective implications. He discusses the appeals made by Americans to natural law as transcending the general norms of English law. A succinct discussion of John Locke's natural law views, which McDonald insists has been "astonishingly misinterpreted." McDonald then proceeds to an interesting comparison and contrast of the two predominant strands of republicanism in America: puritan and agrarian. He proceeds to analyze the "country party" oppositionists as a third influential group and delves into Montesquieu. Many readers will be struck with the differences McDonald describes between the notion of "separation of powers" and a system of "checks and balances"-since most people today describe them as one in the same.
Also interesting is the political economy chapter. McDonald has written more extensively on this subject elsewhere, and it is also the subject of much attention in his stellar biography of Alexander Hamilton. Indeed, the latter part of the chapter is devoted to Hamilton's sophisticated ideas about commerce and finance. The earlier part of the chapter discusses the influence of the French physiocrats, Adam Smith and other early political economists, and continues with an overview of England's experience with public debt.
One chapter is devoted to principles and interests-both those that motivated Framers and (relatedly) how the Framers understood the role and effects of those concepts. Here one finds an interesting discussion of Madison's understanding of factions-made famous in Federalist No. 10. McDonald traces the intellectual roots of this idea, discussing the views of Hume on factions and contrasting them with the Bolingbrokean understandings of republicanism. "[I]t is meaningless to say the Framers intended this or that the Framers intended that," notes McDonald, "their positions were diverse and, in many particulars, incompatible." His survey certainly affirms this understanding (which is also adequately covered in Jack Rakove's "Original Meanings").
A succinct chapter describing the Constitutional Convention follows, in which McDonald catalogues how different groups at the Convention employed the arguments of different political theorists in order to advance their respective viewpoints as to how the federal government was to be constituted, what powers were to be entrusted to it, and to which respective branch they would be entrusted. Much to my delight, McDonald contrasts the understanding of the separation of powers as embodied in the Constitutional document with pre-existing understandings of the separation of powers and the duties commonly thought proper to the respective branches.
Finally, the concluding chapter discusses the powers given to the federal government in the Constitution, and how they operate.
All in all, this is an excellent volume that anyone appreciating political theory, American history and our nation's Constitution should enjoy.

The debates, politics and legacy of the 1787 Constitution

~Novus Ordo Seclorum~ by conservative historian Forrest McDonald is an astute and poignant political history of the fledgling American republic. The framers of the Constitution sought introduce a new concept into the political discourse, namely federalism. They, of course, were all nationalist in the sense that they hoped to strengthen and stabilize a general government. The 1787 Convention hardly started from scratch and was built on the polity existing under the Articles of Confederation. McDonald perceptively captures efforts to balance out the powers amongst the republican institutions through corporate liberty. Each institution jealously guarded their prerogatives as Madison and Jefferson was essentially the prop for the federal regime created in 1787.

The first introductory chapter boldly proclaims that framers had a problem following their independence: that problem succinctly stated was the nature and form of their republic was to take. The framers were unanimous in the belief that the proper end of government was protecting life, liberty, and property. Prior to 1787, they had yet to resolve the scope and role to be played by the general government and it was agreed that that government under the Confederation was scarcely functioning effectively as it was too weak. The second chapter entitled The Rights of the Englishman brilliantly gives a history of the Anglo-American common law tradition that was so cherished by the colonials. It was their go to fortify, uphold and secure the cherished Rights of the Englishman for citizens of the American polity. The third chapter entitled Systems of Political Theory is an exploration of political debates common amongst the framers. They were well schooled in the classics from Cicero to Lycurgus. Likewise, they were familiar with Montesquieu, but opted for prudence and temperance in their statecraft. They eschewed the Jacobin radicalism being fomented across the Atlantic in France by Rousseau and Robespierre. The fourth chapter entitled Systems of Political Economy deals with explorations into political economy. The body of thought delineated as Political economy is simply those "ideas about the policies governments should or should not pursue regarding property relations to promote the general welfare." The bulk of this chapter deals with the influence of Adam Smith on the colonials and the cunning Hamiltonian economic proposals like protective tariffs, bounties for manufacturers and the Bank of the United States. McDonald captures the political struggles that ensued in Washington's cabinet as Randolph and Jefferson fought Hamilton tooth and nail to thwart his machinations. The remaining three chapters essentially chronicle the political developments, debates and theorizing during the Confederation and especially during those pivotal moments in 1787 when the Constitution was being framed.

The breadth and scope of this book is amazing. McDonald gives a great deal of insight on the framing of the American Republic. He does so with a remarkable deal of conservative sobriety and is not afraid to convey his admiration for the American experiment in republican self-government. McDonald gives enormous insight into the debates on jurisprudence, history, political philosophy, and political economy that took place in the pivotal years during and after the 1787 Convention.

Engaging intellectual history!

I bought this book based on the favorable reviews below and I was not disappointed. Specifically, I was interested in understanding the original intent(s) of the authors of the US Constitution in hopes of getting a historical context in which to locate contemporary debate regarding methods for interpreting the Constitution. This book gave me much, much more, and in engrossing and elegant prose to boot.

McDonald is erudite and his knowledge has both breadth and depth. As reviewer Nisala A. Rodrigo pointed out, reading McDonald requires some work due to the level of sophistication he uses to explore the 18th century intellectual context. However, I found this text to be a useful and not overwhelming introduction to constitutional history. This is the first book I've read on the origins of the Constitution and I felt I comprehended the bulk of what McDonald was discussing. As Rodrigo suggested, the chapter on the actual making of the Constitution was a bit tedious. However, McDonald was tremendously helpful in providing a sense of the mental horizons and preoccupations of the founding fathers. For instance, I came away with the impression that the founding fathers did not have strong opinions about how original intent should be factored into future decisions involving the interpretation of the Constitution. The founding fathers were focused on substantive issues and the nitty-gritty compromises necessary to get the document ratified rather than worried by questions of hermeneutical methodologies. In fact, I believe McDonald suggests that a question regarding the appropriate role that original intent plays in judicial decisions would not have even been available to the founding fathers given that such issues did not exist at the time of ratification. This insight really helped me to see a bit of irony in contemporary debate regarding original intent - namely that questions of 'original intent' may not have been among the original intentions of the founding fathers.

On a broader scope, I found the first four chapters (pp. 1-142) the most interesting. McDonald sketches the development of political, economic and legal thought in the 17th and 18th centuries in Britain and America. Although he uses some technical jargon he is careful to provide clear definitions so that non-specialists can understand his scholarship. His explanation of the views of Hume, Smith, Steuart and Mandeville regarding laissez faire and the usefulness of self-interest for achieving the public good are simply brilliant. McDonald's elucidation of the political theories of Locke, Montesquieu, Bolingbroke and Harrington, the effects that these theories had on the Constiutional milieu, and the pervasive suspicion of financial institutions and instruments helps to identify the tensions between creditors and debtors, between speculators in land and in securities, between agrarians and bankers, and, in England, between Crown and country. And understanding the competing interests brings into sharp relief the 18th century Constitutional context by defining what was at stake for whom.

In short, a terrific read. Do not be intimidated by McDonald's scholarship - it is manageable and even engaging.

About the Author
Gray Cook, MSPT, OCS, CSCS, is a practicing physical therapist and orthopedic-certified specialist, and is certified as a strength and conditioning specialist, as an Olympic weightlifting coach and as a kettlebell instructor. The founder of Functional Movement Systems, Cook lectures extensively on the concept of movement pattern screening and assessment. Changing Lives with Movement

How does one go about writing a review of a Gray Cook book? I mean really, where do you even start? I have read the book about ten times by now and still wondered where to begin. Staring at a blank page, I kept thinking about the monstrous task of doing it justice. There is so much knowledge packed into these pages it boggles the mind. So I decided to do something a bit different and give you a perspective of this book and how it has changed the way I practice medicine. The application of the principles contained in this book has changed the lives of many people. The real world people I see every day in my clinic. People who have suffered in pain for years now have their quality of life restored because of the applied principles in this book.

`Movement' was a paradigm shift for me as a clinician. Gray opened my eyes to the wonders of human movement and the systems necessary to understanding it. This was the system I had been searching for in determining why people were getting injured, and why their pain syndromes kept returning. People would ask me, `why does my pain keep coming back?', and I never had an answer that made sense to me. That is until I discovered Movement. Here is a summary of my journey through `Movement.'

This introductory chapter sets the stage for the paradigm shift. It's an awakening to understanding human movement. The section on dysfunction, pain and rehabilitation is something to read a hundred times. The mobility and stability rules are powerful enough to change the clinical outcome of almost every client. I never learned this stuff in school. This one chapter taught me more than I had learned reading entire textbooks. Gotta look at the body as a whole. Imagine that?

In school I learned anatomy, physiology, origins, insertions, and disease processes. Nobody talked about movement. Gray does a nice job transitioning the reader from understanding how the body changes from anatomical function to movement function. The Functional Movement Systems are taught from the FMS (Functional Movement Screen) to the SFMA (Selective Functional Movement Assessment). From a clinical standpoint I can say this is the most superior and effective system I have found to evaluate clients. Gray teaches you the screening process, assessment criteria and a system of correction to arrive at your final destination.

There is something of value in this book no matter who you are; doctor, trainer, strength coach, physical therapist, chiropractor, exercise enthusiast or just someone wanting to learn more about getting healthy. The stages of assessments, correction and strategies are outlined so you know when and if your program is working to the benefit of your client. Every patient who entrusts me with getting them well is evaluated by the `Movement System'. I no longer simply examine the areas that hurt on a patient. I look at how well they move. When I get them to move smarter and move better, they begin to feel better.

The flow of the book is great at introducing you to understanding movement and then guiding you to the corrective strategies. Many books are good at teaching information, yet fall flat at the integration of that information into action steps. Gray gives you a flow chart system of ideas and principles which help you arrive at your final destination...it is a veritable list of `if this; then that.' So you are never at a loss of ultimately learning what you need in order to get the results you want. As a clinician, this is a goldmine of logic and integration. Most people fail in their quest for health because there is not a definable system to follow for success. A roadmap if you will. `Movement' will be your GPS.

I can say unequivocally that `Movement' has been the single most powerful resource to change and improve my skills as a health professional. I learned the material, absorbed the principles, and applied the methods to get results. Simple really. A heartfelt thank you to Gray from myself and my patient's.

A few good ideas ad nauseum

Let me first say that I am very much inclined to be sympathetic with Gray Cook's overall message. It speaks to my existing disposition concerning exercise. Here's a brief sum up: Modern fitness culture is guilty of heaping attempts at strength and endurance gains atop dysfunctional movement. This tends to cause compensation in joints and muscles not intended to sustain loads which leads to inefficiency of movement, pain, discomfort, and often injury. A more proper hierarchy for developing physical ability is Mobility->Stability->Strength in basic movement patterns, and on top of this we can support more specific skills.

If you are looking for a technical book, something which will go through a variety of ways to view and interpret the FMS (Functional Movement Screen) along with appropriate corrective exercises, then this book falls short. The detail regarding the screen itself could be better and more concisely expressed as a pamphlet. Likewise, the corrective exercise section is very sparse, particularly considering the size of this book, and primarily is filled up with the repetition of Cook's main ideological explanation. While I was hoping for some solid exercises, he mostly encourages people to 'do what they know' within the very general framework of his idea (Mobility>stability>strength). This is obviously not helpful if you don't actually have a background in physical therapy.

So rather than a technical book, it is a sort of Philosophy of Fitness book, but even this it does poorly. For the first part, Cook is no writer, and this book is best when it is at its driest, clearly explaining the particulars of an exercise or details of the FMS. When talking philosophy, Cook cannot do much more than repeat himself, so the book can maybe be more likened to a Manifesto, a work of ideology, rather than Philosophy. There is no appeal to larger studies or to broader scientific principles. Part of this is understandable since Cook opposes the reductivist tendencies of much of biomechanics, which ignores the whole for the part. But an understanding of biomechanics clearly informs his understanding of his own practice and of his system, but instead of then informing the reader of how best to utilize an understanding of biomechanics, he basically leaves it out, with only one or two exceptions in the corrective strategies section.

I find it difficult to write this review without mentioning Moshe Feldenkrais's 'Awareness Through Movement', because much of what Gray Cook says regarding movement and correcting movement through sensory experience-- because we cannot correct it through pure intellectual effort--jives with Feldenkrais. Now ATM had its own problems, but the philosophical sections were written with wit and clarity of thought, while the sample exercises, which were implicitly written so that you could experience the inklings of what they were after, helped to illustrate his principles. I only mention that book because it seems like the sort of book that Cook 'should' have written. As it is, I came away from this book feeling as though I had just read an extended sales brochure for the rest of his system. Even Pavel's books I find to be entertaining in their shameless self-promotional, but reading Movement left me feeling like I had just watched 3 hours of the same Sunday morning infomercial about selling realestate, feeling confident that I should know a lot about realestate now, but pretty sure I didn't actually learn anything for the amount of time I spent on it.

With 400+ pages to read, I would have expected more time spent on how to interpret the screen and the majority of time to be spent on explaining corrective exercises. I will say that there were times in reading this book that I was inspired by what Cook said, whether that is reasonable or not, and it is solely for this and the few other tidbits of knowledge he was generous enough to share (if you have low back pain you probably have tight hips) that I give it two stars. Everything Cook says could have been fit into 100 pages, and even then there would have been room for more pictures to illustrate what he's saying. Then, if I'd wanted to, I could have reread the book. (I suppose people don't do that anymore; they read a book once so if you want to have your message resound you better make it a really long book). If you want to read this, definitely do not spend the money on the hardcover, and I'd say don't get the softcover either. I would suggest the kindle version, as it is not really a book you will go back to reread to gather new wisdom nor to reference. Its decidedly not a classic. I still think Cook knows what he's doing, and I myself plan on reading his Athletic Body in Balance book when I can get it from my library, but insofar as 'Movement' is concerned, its ponderous and not informative.

NFL Director of Athletic Performance

I'd like to begin by saying I am not one to go public with review of a product, I prefer to talk to the source personally with any feedback. While I have done that on a number of levels with Gray, I feel this book - and ultimately, this concept needs more recognition. We come from different backgrounds as strength coaches, athletic trainers and rehabilitation specialists. There have been different colleges and curriculums attended. There have been different motivations from performance based priorities to treatment and injury care. We have taken different paths to eventually get to a point of influencing athletes (professional or amateur, young or old, male or female, injured or healthy, and all sports or recreational activities in between). At the end of the day though, don't we all strive for the same goal...to enhance the quality of movement of the person no matter what group they fall in above? That, in my opinion, is our responsibility as fitness professionals. Let's not clutter the definition, the mission of the personal trainer, coach, rehab specialist, or injury care person is to help your client/athlete experience improved movement that will contribute in a positive way to the experience or success of that sport/hobby.

Having said that, I have designed and implemented thousand of protocols and programs to try to get the most from my athletes over the last 20+ years. I had always wondered early in my career why after 6-8 weeks of strenuous training why my players would begin to hit a plateau just before testing. To cut to the chase, I was unaware of their fundamental movement restrictions and asymmetries that were limiting potential to improve. So in my attempts to keep "pushing" the players to the end, I actually was not helping them...honestly, putting them at a greater risk of injury.

There was no FMS at the time. I was able to meet Gray almost 10 years ago and was subjected to the early days of the FMS. This changed the way I looked at total athlete development. While my methods to enhance strength, power, speed, and conditioning, I learned there were elements to overall movement that were needed before I could expect improvements in those performance areas. This education opened up a greater understanding of human movement, that in our traditional college curriculums of anatomy, kinesiology, and biomechanics we did not receive.

Gray has pushed the standard high in terms of research in this area. To be able to set a baseline when assessing an athlete for the first time is critical for the above-mentioned professionals. A strength coach should know the red flags of a healthy athlete before starting increased activity, the athletic trainer should know them as well to help take a proactive approach to injury reduction (this makes his job easier in the end = less injuries), and the rehab professional should have a guide as to where to return the injured athlete to sport. This becomes a common language that all professional can speak intelligently and consistently about.

Gray has captured this in a tool that can be used to establish this baseline in under 10 minutes. I use it with every person that I will eventually train - I do not write workout programs anymore, I write individual based systems to enhance movement and reduce injury risk, and I reset the system every 6-8 weeks.

This book covers these concepts in great detail, please take the time to read each section multiple times. I have found the additional time spent on the front end to educate (this is not easy material to grasp at first glance), pays itself back more than you could ever imagine. It takes time to put the puzzle together - I know some of the negative things said about the concepts here are made from not understanding the depths of Gray's work. The book illustrates areas that unlock many questions we have had through the years regarding reoccurring injury, risk factors, and performance limiting variables. I have learned about movement and how to correct poor fundamental patterns through these concepts, and have witnessed movement changes in a matter of minutes that I never believed could occur. I have been able to break down athlete restrictions in a matter of weeks and make changes that no one else could find, let alone correct over several years previously. Think about the profound impact that will have on your client/athlete, when you change their lives on and off the field in terms of improved movement and less pain and micro trauma.

Gray has made a significant impact in the field of movement. His research is second to none, and his passion to provide the latest in movement based education is endless. There are thousands of books out there covering sets and reps, modalities, and speed, but efforts to improve those areas can be slowed and even counter-productive if we do not know the underlying individual restrictions and asymmetries. Gray has put together a total package of effective tools that encourages collaboration among professionals to make sound, evidence-based decisions. Gray is truly a leading resource in our field, and I appreciate him putting his thoughts into this book for all of us to benefit from. There are not many resources like this on the market that unites all fitness professionals as one.
