The importance of understanding Social History

Bloom and Martin have crafted an incredibly well written history of a telling moment in American history. The book is a painstakingly researched and even-handed page-turner. It sheds light on the actual events in the Black Panther Party's brief history as it looks deepling into the existing American political structure and the obligations that confront us in creating viable social change for the future.
As someone who lived through the era and supported the Panthers, the details brought to light by Bloom and Martin are both familiar and illuminating. The structural insight and shortcoming of central Party players is made very clear, as is the immense and unimaginal pressure brought against them by the Federal Government. Even from my jaded perspective, the untennable behavior of a democratic government against an admittedly revolutionary but non-the-less legal constituted entity is stunning. The book reminds us that the dramatic photos of handsome gun-toting African-American men and women must be balanced by scenes of children fed free breakfasts and given free clothing in Panther offices throughout the United States- Head Start without government funding.
The monstrous images of dark government repression- well documented- coupled with the Party's clearly presented structural flaws and organizational genius tell us volumes about the needs and challenges of real social change. The book is a must not only for activists but for the vast majority of us who simply want to get a handle on how to get our great nation un-stuck in the mud.
