WASHINGTON POST BESTSELLER

From the author of the international bestseller THE AGE OF THE UNTHINKABLE comes a powerful new story of revolution and riches in a connected age.

Endless terror. Refugee waves. An unfixable global economy. Surprising election results. New billion-dollar fortunes. Miracle medical advances. What if they were all connected? What if you could understand why? The Seventh Sense examines the historic force now shaking our world--and explains how our leaders, our businesses, and each of us can master it.

All around us now we are surrounded by events that are difficult to understand. But every day, new figures and forces emerge that seem to have mastered this tumultuous age. Sometimes these are the leaders of the most earthshaking companies of our time, accumulating billion-dollar fortunes. Or they are successful investors or our best generals. Other times, however, quick success is going to terrorists, rebels, and figures intent on chaos. What if we could know the secret of those who can make sense of this age? What if we could apply it to the questions that worry us most?

In this groundbreaking new book, Joshua Cooper Ramo, author of the international bestseller The Age of the Unthinkable, introduces a powerful way of seeing the world. The Seventh Sense is the story of what all of today's successful figures see and feel--forces that are invisible to most of us but explain everything from explosive technological change to uneasy political ripples. The secret to power now is understanding our new age of networks--not merely the Internet but also networks of trade and DNA and finance. Based on his years of advising generals, CEOs, and politicians, Ramo takes us into the opaque heart of our world's rapidly connected systems and teaches us what the victors of this age know--and what the losers are not yet seeing.

But The Seventh Sense won't merely change the way you see the world. It will also give you the power to change it.

Table-pounding frustration
By Ash Jogalekar
I regret to say that I honestly cannot remember the last time I felt like pounding the table with frustration so much while reading a book. Overall I found Ramo's volume highly repetitive and bombastic, long on rhetoric, name-dropping and references and short on logic and argument. Basically Ramo's entire thesis can be summed up in two sentences: "Networks are important" and "An object's connections change its nature". Both of these points are rather obvious if you think about them. And both of them are enumerated on page 10 or so.

It felt like a 5 page article or blog post had been tenuously turned into a 300 page book (sadly, there's too many such books around these days). Unfortunately Ramo comes across as one of those self-appointed ‘thought leaders’ who thinks he is dispensing revealing wisdom from the mountaintop, when all he is doing is throwing a set of loosely connected facts at you and making it sound like they constitute a coherent and original argument. He thinks he knows a lot but he says very little. Simply kicking around references from European history and Chinese culture does not make for a novel thesis. In some sense the book reminded me of Nassim Taleb’s wide-ranging writing, but Taleb has many more original points to make than Ramo.

I did find some of the quotes and references in the book interesting, but overall I thought the book was a mess. At least some of the reviewers on Amazon seem to agree with me so I may not be the only one who thinks this way. If you really want to read the book, I would suggest rapidly flipping through the pages and going straight for the threadbare amount of meat, ignoring the massive amount of bone and loosely hanging cartilage.

Essential
By Christopher M. Schroeder
The predominant thought I had in reading this book in two sittings, living in Washigton, DC, is how little anyone in this town understands how the world is changing around them. From the Executive Branch to Congress to their staffs and the thinktank/lobbyists and journalists that are this city, there is universal focus on the echo chamber of the here and now -- a look at the future presuming the next decade can (or should be) like the last. I cannot tell you what Syria will look like in a year, of what a softening China will mean in three, but I can tell you with 100 % certainty that by the end of this decade two-thirds of humanity will have a smart device on their person. These aren't merely "better phones," but the same computing power in each device that ALL of NASA had to put a man on the moon 40 years ago. What this and the vast networks of instant connection, shared experience, shared learning, organization of action -- for better or worse -- is the most central issue of our era. And with the rapid, unstoppable rise of data knowledge, AI, virtual reality, genomics and more, the next five years will be vastly different than the last. Joshua Cooper Ramo has been one of the great thinkers and synthesizers of shifting paradigms -- as a meticulous journalist, author and with extensive, on the ground work in China, Asia and around the globe. This important read is a call not only to understand these worlds, but how to lead an manage our day to day existence and that of our children. I noted earlier I read it in two sittings, because Joshua is also a beautiful writer. My only prayer is that the Presidential Candidates would read this, understand it, and begin to plan policies towards the realities it describes. They won't. But we can.

Deftly explaining our networked moment – and a critical guide to the future.
By M. Spector
We live in a remarkably transformative era. With The Seventh Sense: Power, Fortune, and Survival in the Age of Networks, Ramo illustrates the boundaries of this new moment with remarkable clarity and vision.

The Seventh Sense addresses the fourth phase of the American narrative, power and broader strokes of global order using a bit of history, philosophy, national security and Silicon Valley, a mix not solely relegated to business or how-to but an authentic survey of the world around usa nd the sense needed to master it. The book properly equips readers to address the challenges of ISIS, the opportunities of AI, the power of stateless currencies like Bitcoin and the forces of ideologues like Donald Trump, all with a dose of creative prose and vignettes from a global career. The Seventh Sense represents the critical framework for leaders to make sense of and shape their work to a rapidly evolving world.

The book uncovers, moves between, makes relevant and elevates new and familiar voices in fresh ways–Master Nan, AT&T's Paul Baran, Thomas Jefferson, Occupy Wall St.;Ramo's insights, particularly the New Caste and the constructs of Hard Gatekeeping, have the potential to become lingua franca for public intellectuals, explained with a deftness of prose that draws upon Ramo's years as a journalist navigating some of the most complex issues of our time. Ramo doesn't overly fetishize technology and the future – he provides ample areas of caution –and most importantly identifies original opportunities within and beyond the networks these machines connect.

There is a thoroughness here that others in this category lack –and I imagine this book will become one that business leaders and political mavens to explain this era, as it will for me.
