Informative book!

This book was great to have, and contains information that would make both the neophyte and the senior geologist happy. It is divided into two parts, a non-technical part with road trips, outcrop locations, environmental considerations, tectonics, orogenies, etc... along with color pictures of the things Vera discusses. Then there was the technical section that contained all of the pertinent formations, their characteristics, locations, geologic histories, and stratigraphies. Also, some interesting things about the reservoir rocks in the Amazon Basin were presented as well.

A great book to help understand Ecuadorian geology.

This is exactly what I was looking for. I live in Cuenca, Ecuador and have been curious about the geology and rock formations of Ecuador for a long time. This book covers in details the basics, and then goes into much detail about the different geological provinces in Ecuador. Also included is a "tour roads" guide that is very helpful in finding future locations to research. I have travelled cross country all over Ecuador now for 3 years and this book gives me new ideas and places to visit. For example, the next visit to Quito we will drive by the old prison to find the closed down quarry and collect a rock specimen similar to the one pictured in this book featuring a rainbow side section. This book really is great and so far I have only gotten through half of it. The other half is fairly scientific and covers in great details the rock and soil compositions and how they relate to the geological history of Ecuador. The book also features many drawings, diagrams and charts to help you understand more about this beautiful country.
I hope to see the 2nd edition out soon! I would like to see some more pictures and more information on geology and how it affects Ecuador commercially. This might include rock climbing, canyoning, Cueva de los Toyas expedition and interior research (pics), mountain biking, etc. These activities are very popular and many of these types of people would be interested in this book. I would love to see more information as it relates to these sports activities in the future. Also, a field guide section that would allow you to possibly identify popular types of rocks in Ecuador while you do the tour roads activities.
Overall this is a great book and the best one written on Ecuador geology in particular. I was able to buy a signed copy directly from the author, Ram�n Vera. Great author and a nice guy. Keep up the hard work and I look forward to buying the 2nd edition when it comes out!

Best book available

Best book available in any language re geology of Ecuador. Published in 2013. Buy it. The only thing that comes close is The Physical Geography of South America (Oxford Regional Environments), but it is not as good.
