I am fortunate to own a commissioned piece of Erin's art and now also have this coffee table book. It is very interesting to read of the open impressionism style of painting and also delve into Erin's early life when she was learning and perfecting her talent. The colors in this book are amazing and depict Erin's pieces perfectly.

Discover the High Road of a Life of Self-Discipline

Ask Brian Tracy the solution to any problem and it seems the answer will be "self-discipline". His great book No Excuses! not only talks about the power of self-discipline, it does so persuasively, passionately, and even better how it can be practically lived out each day. And make no mistake self-discipline is a daily issue.

According to Brian, "the development of self-discipline is the high road that makes everything possible for you." That's not just his outlook for one chapter of the book, that's his outlook and commitment for all 21 chapters of the book. Step by step he shows, guides, and if need be cajoles the reader to step it up to a life of self-discipline.

The 21 chapters are covered in 3 main parts:

1) Self- Discipline and Personal Success.

Brian did a great job for me in laying out the value of self-discipline. He builds off a great Elbert Hubbard quote, "There are 999 other success principles that I have in my reading and experience, but without self-discipline, none of them work. With self-discipline, they all work." Good to remember as one deals with the Path of Least Resistance and the Expediency Factor.

This was my favorite part of the book as Brian laid out the value and power in a life of self-discipline. Brian especially convinced me the value of the self-discipline of setting daily goals especially the 10-Goal Exercise and focusing on the most important goal.

2) Self-Discipline in Business, Sales and Finances

In this part, Brian speaks especially to those in sales, his sweet spot of communication. But his self-discipline wisdom also focuses into leadership issues, work habits, and problem solving. His goal is through the development of self-discipline in your work, you join the top 10% in your field. For Woody Allen, the key to work is just showing up. For Brian Tracy, the key to work is self-discipline with no excuses. Woody's way might get you a paycheck, Brian's way will get you to the top of your field.

3) Self-Discipline and the Good Life

I appreciated Brian's emphasis that the good life is more than the material side, but is ultimately the emotional and spiritual, and even relational areas of one's life. In some ways we all know of the need for self-discipline in our physical health, our marriage and family relationships as well as discovering peace of mind. Yet Brian talks about the impact on one's life when you have self-discipline.

Still the weakest part of the book for me was the chapter on friendship. I felt the emphasis was more on saying something positive than saying what is true. Positive talk to others will make you popular, but deep friendship I have discovered lovingly tells me what I need to hear.

I give No Excuses! 5 out of 5 stars. I was glad I made it part of my nightly reading, taking a chapter a night to focus on self-discipline and to work through the Action Exercises each chapter concludes with to put self-discipline into practice. You could read this book for a theory on self-discipline, I found it more valuable as a guide to apply self-discipline to my life.

Nice sentiment but not very practical for most of us

Nice ideas but not practical for most of us. While I agree with the sentiment of the author - we really should be voting with our wallets and helping to stop the exploitation of cheap foreign labour, some of the alternatives offered here are simply out of the reach of most of us. I checked many of the websites listed in the book and the clothes are simply unaffordable, even if you aren't buying a lot. I realise the book is about "luxe" clothing, but luxe has never been cheap and it's always been there as an alternative for those who could afford it. What I want is sustainable but reasonably priced clothing for the rest of us.

The book will serve to at least make people aware of some very important issues and it will be great if more people consciously buy less but better quality clothing and wear it for longer. I have never bought lots of fashion, have always looked for good quality and do wear my clothes often and for a long time, albeit more often than not they are made in China and Bangladesh. Even most of the so called "better" brands manufacture in these countries and yet they still have the gall to charge 5 times what you'd be paying in a cheaper chainstore. I therefore do not look at brands but at the fabric, style and quality overall and how often and long I will wear something.

However, I am still recovering from shock at one of the "vintage" fashion websites that the author listed in her book where there were second-hand designer handbags listed for prices in the range of $20,000. Really? Frankly, if I had that sort of money to spend on a handbag (and second-hand at that!) I'd rather be sending it to those poor clothing workers in Bangladesh. There is something obscene about prices like that and I will not be convinced by any amount of clever marketing that $20,000 for a handbag is okay. The key is to provide fair wages and working conditions for those who are making our clothes and then price that clothing accordingly. It would then be a fair price, but not a ridiculous price. If you're willing to pay in the thousands for luxury items, it would surely make more sense to have a local dressmaker make your clothes to your exact size and specifications instead forking out thousands of dollars to trendy designers who want to make you think you're doing a great thing for the planet and poor people when frankly all they're doing is lining their own pockets.

A Diamond in the Rough

Many fashion industry insiders will laud a company or brand for being sustainable, but the very same people turn a blind eye to fast fashion. Phillips brings this dark issue to light with well-researched, startling facts about what the fast fashion industry is costing humanity and Mother Earth at large.
As someone with a very limited disposable income and clothing budget (especially for living in NYC), I really appreciated her practical tips for building a more environmentally sound and humane wardrobe.

After reading her first book, Lure of Luxe: Climbing the Luxury Consumption Pyramid, I decided to try a fast fashion fast: I boycotted Forever 21, H&M and Victoria's Secret. I really thought I'd miss it, but I didn't, so I started paying more attention to where my clothing and accessories came from. It's actually more fun to care about the origins of things and the stories of their makers than it is to recreationally shop. At first, I must admit my friends thought my new behavior was a bit "snobby" because I couldn't join in on their favorite pastime: recreational shopping. But when I showed them my (now) minimalistic wardrobe and shared that I make far fewer purchases, they totally understood. I also receive compliments on most everything I wear, because I only purchase and keep what I love (and I'm a stickler for a perfect fit). I end up breaking even budget-wise -- splurging once or twice a year on a luxury purchase (instead of bi-weekly or monthly trips for cheap-y clothes) and the rest of the time I buy consignment or vintage. I do follow the 80 / 20 rule so every once in a while I "allow" myself to slip. I think "slipping" is OK when you plan on really taking care of a garment, and wearing it for many years. Slips aside, by and large, I feel much, much better about my wardrobe than before having these insights.

In the spirit of her book, Phillips gives us more the book than we bargained for. Whether it was her intention or not, this book is also a guide to finding your signature style… without all the "buy this, buy that" nonsense. I'd recommend it to any fashion lover who's sick of the current daily churn and in search of an insider's advice on how to spend well and stand out.

Overcoming anxiety

Anxiety is a mentally crippling disorder, it can hold you back from many opportunities. I have social anxiety, I cannot count the amount of networking parties and other important events I have missed because the thought of being around so many persons made me afraid. One of the problems that persons with anxiety face is lack of confidence and sometimes the only way to build confidence is by self-affirmations and trying to become more social. In some cases, meditation is also helpful to curb anxiety. It is comforting to realize that the author has been through and ultimately conquered his anxiety disorders and his now sharing his strategies in this book.

I am so thankful to have found this book! I have dealt with a lot of social anxiety and self esteem problems in my past. I am the type of person who thinks a lot. Many times I've been told that my problem is just that I think too much.

This book encourages you to think, but to think more logically and more positively. It makes you aware of thought/emotion cycles that are harmful and that are not true. It walks you through changing these.

Again, SO grateful for this book. I have bought several copies to give to friends who deal with the same kind of thing. I highly recommend it.

Completely worth the read!

I have really poor social skills as I'm anxious talking to a large group of people and is even afraid raising my own opinion. As I'm in the journey of self-improvement, this book has given me lots of information and advice on how to communicate better and become more assertive. The simple and effective techniques help me on how to boost self-confidence and some starting points for freeing myself from social anxiety. The best self-help book I've read so far. I definitely recommend it to people struggling with social anxiety disorder. Completely worth the read!

About the Author
SUZANNE BROOKER received her BFA at the California Institute of the Arts in 1979, attended by invitation the Whitney Museum Independent Study program in New York, and pursued her drawing and painting studies at the School of Visual Arts. Brooker has taught drawing and painting at the Gage Academy of Art in Seattle, Washington since1999.

Decent enough on portrait techniques.

This book contains some valuable information and tips on this difficult topic. The skin tone colour mixing part is especially helpful, and the illustrations are informative and high quality. I really like the way it goes into detail on different elements of the face, on application of paint and on toned grounds. Nevertheless, this book suffers from the same problem as all of them do. The step by step demonstrations are all made by the author/artist himself. This results in a lot of demonstrations basically using the same approach in different variations. I would really like to see a book of this kind with demonstrations by different artists, displaying different approaches and techniques! If you are very interested in glazing techniques, this should really satisfy you, since all the demonstrations involve a lot of glazing. That beeing said, the book actually includes a mini-demonstration by another artist with a different approach.

All in all a great book for the intermediate painter who wants to learn more about depicting the human form.

Good overview of technique

The author presents a coherent approach to painting in traditional "Old Master" style. To absorb the wealth of
valuable information takes several readings, as well as working through the exercises and much practice. Techniqes
are clearly described.
There are some impressive examples of painted portraits -- but not by the author. The step by step demos she herself
does are not inspiring and result in stiff, "tight", uninteresting images.
This book will be most useful to painters who have some experience and have already encountered the technical issues the author describes. Beginners will probably find it overwhelming.
Incidentally, the author's mentor Domenic Cretara, who supplies the introduction, is a modern master in his own
right, and his work is well worth looking up online.

Big disappointment

This book doesn't quite live up to other "Atelier" books by Watson-Guptill. it presents a rather timid approach to portraiture (glaze here, scumble there...). On top of that, some of the technical information is inaccurate: "flesh ochre" is NOT a pigment (page 39) -- it is a hue; "ASTM D-4236" is NOT a "color code" (page 41) but rather the labeling standard for potential health hazards in art materials; "PR101" is the color index designation for synthetic red earth pigments, not its "chemical description"; "rosso veneto", "pozzuoli red" and "terra rosa" are NOT "core red earth pigments" (page 54) -- these are variations in hues of the same pigment class (red iron oxide pigments, either PR101 or PR102) which can vary from brand to brand!; the author also states that "a well-balanced selection of glazing pigments would include lapis lazuli" (page 40) which is such bad advice because lapis lazuli in oil paint form is rarely available and prohibitively expensive. Of course, she fails to mention that ultramarine blue (PB29) is a synthetic and far cheaper alternative to it. Although there is a section entitled "the nature of pigments" (page 39), the author does not discuss or explain color indexes -- the standard and critical pigment information that is used by almost all artists' paint manufacturers today on their paint tube labels. The author (on page 150, etc.) misuses the term "scumble" (which is to apply a thin layer of lighter, more opaque color over a darker color) when she actually meant "glaze" (application of a thin layer of darker, more transparent paint over a lighter color)... AND THE LIST GOES ON. These technical inaccuracies aside, the step-by-step demonstrations are also such disappointing specimens. I would not recommend this book.

Comprehensive and Quite Useful

I found this book to be extraordinarily helpful in outlining how nonprofits can adopt better practices towards creating more sustainable social entrepreneurial models. While my background is in the profit world, it helped me to recognize how my existing knoweldge could be adapted to social entreprenuership. I highly recommend this book. It is well-written, comprehensive in its topics and it contains very useful tips and "how to" material.

A Must Read for those in the Non-Profit Sector

As a businessperson with an MBA, I readily identified with and agreed with the advice and strategies presented in this book. For people with a passion to help improve things in a not-so-perfect world, this book is a gift. It provides real life examples and turns theories into step-by-step directions. Each chapter makes good use of subheads and bullet points and ends with a concise summary. The authors have real-life experience working as social entreprenuers and it shows. I highly recommend this book.

This book has an awesome collection of information

This book has an awesome collection of information, spans the breadth of jet engine technology and has a fantastic collection of pictures. I like the strategy of starting off with some history and discussing the main aspects of design and finally covering each jet engine component in more detail. Over all, this book does an excellent job of covering the necessary details without becoming too textbookish.

What really makes it hard to read is the poor editing, repeated redundant information and unnecessary pictures that do not add value. To give an example of a random picture to fill out space, take for example the chapter on performance, Pg 78, there is a useless picture of 5 identical planes flying in formation. Every other picture (not referenced which is very irksome) is a performance map. Most figures are not numbered or referenced, so if you were reading your first jet engine book, you would be frustrated because you would find it difficult to easily grasp things.If you find CFD images or contour plots, they do not mention what is being plotted, for example in page 172, the picture is titled 'flow field analysis of a cavity in an internal system", there is no indication of what physical quantity is being displayed, how the colors map to magnitudes, making this picture meaningless!

An example of a conceptual mistake (IMO) is on page 14, the author says " When the nozzle is choked Vjet is fixed at Mach 1" where Vjet is the exit gas flow speed in the equation (F = W(Vjet - Vflight) + A(rho_exit - rho_inlet) . There two things wrong here:
- Vjet is velocity and not the dimensionless Mach number
- When a jet engine nozzle gets choked, it is the the Mach number at the throat that is Mach 1 and in usual operating conditions, the nozzle exit Mach number is supersonic (about 2)
This blunder early on and several others makes it really difficult to trust what the author has to say later.

My advice to the publishers and editors:Most people who will buy this book and pay $70 for it will mostly be aviation enthusiasts or Aerospace engineers (like myself) that hope to add an excellent book to their collection. We already know a good portion of the information and it is difficultl to get through the book in its present form. Therefore, in future revisions, please do the following:

- Revisit the information to make sure you have all the facts right, especially concepts
- Remove unnecessary pictures, instead elaborate on the existing information, make it more readable and add references to pictures.
