Readers who don't know Donnie Brasco, either the book or the movie, which detailed how young Pistone managed to float in the sewer of Mafia scum, won't get what Unfinished Business is all about. But those who remember rasco will be eager to know the rest of the story, 20 years after Pistone/Brasco recounted how he infiltrated the New York Mafia and how his testimony led to a series of investigations that emasculated the five New York families. The rationalization for this follow-up volume is that, now that the trials have come to fruition, Pistone can tell more about how he worked undercover and how he testified. There's a great deal of filler here (we don't really need to know about what a nice guy Johnny Depp was on the set of the movie Donnie Brasco), but there is also enough deep background about working undercover, enough truly hair-raising reminiscences of close calls, and enough reflection on how far an undercover agent submerges himself before losing a moral compass to make this worthwhile reading--providing you're a fan of the first Donnie Brasco. Very interesting but no where near the leve of the initial Donnie Brasco story

This is a good and fun read. It is no where near as compelling as the initial Donnie B story. It does a couple of things REALLY well though. First I liked the added background details that would have bogged down the first book. Second I liked that he named names of the Hollywood stars that pandered to these murderers by being at their trials thus trying to lend image support...Robert Duval, James Caan, Anthony Quinn....all of whom went way down in my book-good info thanks Joe! I also liked some of the tid bits of "criminal" behavior he had to do to look legit to the people he was infiltrating...I would have liked more since that statute of limitations is up but I understand he has to be careful of his own image. The one quirk that was beyond annoying was his attempt at conveying mafia lingo in writing when not part of the tale....specifically starting about 1 in 5 paragraphs with the expression "Nothing for nothing but..." Ok Joe we know you were a legit gangster-we read your first book-you didn't have to try so hard to sound like one. A phrase repeated in speech or writing gets old REALLY fast.....And FYI if you are thinking about audio book---Forgetaboutit! Joe can not read a narrative, even his own, to save his life. I tried a sample and it was beyond painful! Get the ebook or printed version!!!

Excellent sequel to the original Donnie Brasco book

This is an excellent sequel to the original Donnie Brasco book. Pistone describes the many Mafia cases he helped to put together after he came out of his undercover role. His style is interesting, detailed, and often humorous. The book is very enjoyable, but takes time to read because it is quite thorough.

...if you read 'Donnie Brasco', then you will definitely want to read this. It ties up all the open ends from the first book concerning the myriad subjects that were left unfinished because of pending trials, etc...If you are a Mob junkie this is your book. It also analyzes the true scope of the damage that this lone FBI Undercover Agent did to the modern Mafia, both by direct testimony for the next 20+ years after coming out...and the chaos created within the mob's own ranks which has turned a once omnipotent organization into a mere shell of itself. Fascinating reading.
