Amazon.com Review
My favorite book about Nirvana. For one thing, it doesn't sensationalize, but it doesn't gloss anything over. Having been active in the Seattle music scene throughout Nirvana's obscurity, fame, and demise, I can vouch for the accuracy of its description of the music community in the late '80s and early '90s and Nirvana's role. And being in a band that's currently climbing the ladder, I appreciated the many lessons this book has to offer about the workings of the recording industry.
Best of all, because this book was written before Cobain's death, it is not tinged with the "isn't this tragic" attitude that permeates many books about Nirvana and Cobain. Instead, the book is vibrant with the energy, excitement, and passion that swept local musicians the day "Nevermind" was released, local audiences in the months after, the U.S, and--lest we forget--the world, during Nirvana's more-than-15-minutes of fame.

MUST GET
By Glen Graber
One of the best rock and roll books i ever read. You will learn what Kurt's personality was really like, and not what the media portrayed him to be. A working class poor guy from a broken home that became a big part of the mainstream change in the 90's. Also a lot of info on Dave and Chris.

BALANCED OVERVIEW
By J. head
Good all around intro book about the indie band Nirvana. Taking the book at face value, I believe the author has presented the facts truthfully. The author who also contributes to the Rolling Stone Magazine claims to have followed them on some tours and appears to have been on good terms with the band members. He shows evidence of cross checking stories and sources and notes discrepancies when they appear. I believe its one of the better and fair judgments of this band. Although the bands career follows the usual, struggle, hard times, brief honeymoon period, then indulgent self-destructive period", the book portrays the events that were going on in the life of Nirvanas leader Kurt Cobain. I would say this book's strongest attribute is portraying the personal struggle of Kurt Cobain on a roller coaster ride of fame with Nirvana.
A weak point may be that the songs origins and lyrics are not explained well. It may be because Kurt Cobain many times wrote the lyrics almost impromptu just before a recording session almost at a stream of consciousness rate. Maybe the origin of the songs has no deep meaning or origins. Besides being an interesting story, the other highlights are the bands relationship with corporate bands, boomer music, heavy metal bands, and other Northwest so called Grunge bands. I would definably recommend this book as an overview of Nirvana. I know some die-hard fans have blamed Courtney or the corporate record company feverish touring dates for Kurts eventual suicide, but as the book amply points out Kurt and the band had some problems all stages of notoriety, and Kurt as the Band's leader was a time bomb waiting to explode. I think the book portrays the best
non judgemental view of Kurt Cobain's life. The particular edition I read include a final chapter added to include some
info on Kurts farewell note and service.

Written Before Cobain's Death
By Dai-keag-ity
Come As You Are is a valuable source of information on Nirvana and Kurt Cobain, not only for its in-depth coverage of the band's rise and early years of fame, but because it lacks the tone of hero worship and tragedy present in virtually all other post-1994 books about this group. Where later books never seem to step entirely away from the cloud Cobain's death at age twenty-seven cast over the short history of Nirvana, Come As You Are is often funny, always descriptive, and slants toward what looked at the time of its publication, to be an influential future for this ground-breaking trio. I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to know about the roots of the best band of the Grunge era.
