Great Collection in Regards to Latter-day Saint History

I found this book at Deseret Book about a week ago and read through the introduction then and there. I could tell that the book was going to be founded on rigorous scholarship. After reading through its entirety, I was not disappointed. The book's strength, in the words of W. Paul Reeve, was "in the twentieth and twenty-first century chapters, previously underexplored eras in the changing status of blackness within Mormonism."
The book was challenging for me and even a bit bothersome (as I believe it should be). Coming to terms with the Churches racial past has been a bit difficult for me. It's been the most challenging subject for me in regards to Mormonism. I understand that these men grew up in racist times, and were products of American prejudice against blacks. But still, it persistently bothers me to know and understand how things went down.
The most telling attitudes were from Mark E Peterson and Bruce R. McConkie.I was surprised reading Peterson's statements regarding segregation, and his ideas behind it. I would say that this is in reality an embarrassing aspect of our history. Certainly, I wish I could turn back time and change everything that happened in regards to blacks and the Mormon Church. Hopefully intelligent Latter-day Saints can learn from this book and come to terms with our dark history regarding this matter.
I want to use this review also as a venue to respond to other reviews found on Amazon. in regards to its work The criticism is against the Mormon Churches essay (which, by the way, I fully endorse) explaining a brief history regarding this subject. They claim the book "debunked" the Churches claims in regards to blacks and the Priesthood, because, as they claim, the Church essay denies that this was never taught as a "doctrine." This criticism is flat out false. The Churches essay does not deny that the priesthood ban was ever taught as doctrine (the Churches essay is actually silent in this regard). It does, however, state that explanations made by Brigham Young and other Church leaders of the priesthood ban are not accepted as doctrine today. Another thing that made me chuckle, and perhaps because critics are completely unaware of this, is that the author of the Churches essay (W. Paul Reeve) is quoted on the back cover of the book praising its scholarship!
Why, one would ask themselves, would a book W. Paul Reeve practically endorses like it so much when it supposedly "debunks" his own essay? This explanation offered by some of our Amazon reviewers are simply misguided. The book does NOT debunk the Churches essay. In fact, it supports much of the information found therein.

This book (written by a Mormon and non-Mormon scholar) is another great example of the LDS (Mormon) Church coming to terms with its past. And the fact that it is being sold at Deseret Book is great news. I would recommend it to those who are studying the Mormon church in regards to its racial history, and to students of African American History and Religion.

Gripping history

An outstanding summary of documents on this unpleasant aspect of the history of the Mormon Church. In the Church's current posting "Race and the Priesthood" in "Gospel Topics" at LDS.org, the practice of not allowing Blacks to receive the priesthood is explained away as a "policy" which reflected the racial prejudices of the times. That is not correct. The practice was described in a Statement from the First Presidency in 1949 as a "direct commandment from the Lord" (see page 66) and as "revelations of the Lord" (see Letter from the First Presidency dated July 17, 1947) (see p. 65).
Racism was not just an artifact of Brigham Young and the 19th century. Racist statements from 20th century Apostles - including Mark E. Peterson and Bruce R. McConkie - are especially disturbing. The book also points out how church members who were opposed to the ban were threatened with excommunication.

Great collection of church historical documents

Great collection of documents that are very instructive on a topic that I thought I had already studied pretty thoroughly. The book presents many interesting doctrinal statements, personal communications from church authorities, perspectives from both black and white members during priesthood/temple exclusion. All in all, it provides not only overwhelming evidence debunking the church's recent characterization of the exclusion as mere "policy" implemented by church leaders unfortunately influenced by common biases of their time... but also some good insight into how this doctrine affected members on a personal level.
