There is a secret sauce...

Having been fortunate enough to have worked at some of the best companies in Silicon Valley and beyond, and with five start-ups under my belt, I can assure you that luck and timing aren't everything. Great vision isn't all it's chalked up to be either. And persistence, while crucial, will only get you so far. All of these things are important, to be sure. However, there is an elusive element to what makes a great company from the start. And John Montgomery has captured its essence. From kick *ss companies like SlideShare, which was recently acquired by LinkedIn to Blogger, to Skype to Webmail.us, certain patterns either predispose a start-up to success or lack thereof.
Great from the Start demystifies the "it" behind what makes certain nascent companies different. Chapter by chapter, John "Monty" Montgomery looks at the role that being conscious plays in making decisions that stick. He goes on to discuss how start-up team structure is the foundation for being well positioned to not squander good luck, and to turn bad luck into valuable learning experiences.

Disruptive! this book proves to you that it pays more to be good!

I picked up the book at bed time at the end of a long day and started reading thinking that I will browse another book on entrepreneurship and startups. I was wrong. I was reading on and on until it was around 1:30am when sleep got a hold of me. I found it hard to stop reading.
The author writes in a very eloquent and flawless way about how it pays to be good, and how a successful startup can be more successful; and if you are in the process of starting one, then you are more likely to succeed if you start ethical, positive and good first without overlooking price models and how to make money; in other words, greed is not good, only good is good and will bring you more good.
Based on latest research of neuro-leadership and neuro-socio and biological workings of the brain and its impact on human behavior the book starts by laying out the foundation for "using neuroscience, psychology and organizational development to design our startups for how humans work best" the book starts by explaining the role of social neuroscience, neuro-economics and the dynamics of neuro-leadership and the impact this has when you build a humane startup based on trust, and good then you cultivate followers both who champion you inside: work for you diligently and outside: customers. If a startup ecosystem is influenced primarily by its founders and the first batch of employees; then how would you behave, influence and lead in order to accomplish your goal? our biology and brain dynamics says that when we are good to each other we can work more and accomplish more.
The book explains that and the impact of doing the right thing at the right time driven by ethics first, not by greed, and how when you are an ethically inspiring and motivating leader you are bound to accomplish more. But this is no theory. The author lists a good list of startups that he has followed and researched over the last 20 years or so and describes the story of the rise of a technological feat in each case.
This is a good necessary read especially for the aspiring startup founder. I think it brings something new to the table; it sheds a new light, a new perspective on things that are rarely seen or looked at in other good books on the subject, a fresh look at the dynamics of a startup that is more biologically and ethically driven and more related to how we human beings think, work, or how our brains function in an organization like a startup. Inspiring indeed.
